If I have c: listed it showes Docs, program files when i click say docs, it expands (in the left menu) automatically. I dont want it to do that unless i click the + sign. Is there a way to fix this?

After several tech discussions with Dell, the computer now just shuts down on its own when I leave it unattended for any length of time. Dell asked me to uninstall/reinstall Windows XP. I am trying to avoid this because it is a lot of work to back up all of my files. I could try prior to doing uninstall/reinstall?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a dell lattitude d800, and my mouse pointer automatically goes to the upper left hand corner. i've plugged an external mouse and i get the same problem. i don't have any spyware - or viruses - as i've ran adaware, spybot, and microsoft antispyware. i've also ran Norton antivirus - and none of the three have detected maliciuos sw or viruses. i don't have any other problems w/the machine. i've uninstalled the default drivers, and reinstalled them.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I open up the Start Menu on one of the accounts, there is nothing in the left-hand column. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.
The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".

Click the File Types tab.In the Registered File Types box, click File Folder, and then click Edit.In the Actions box,click Find and then click Set Default.Click Close, and then click Close. After you follow these steps, double-clicking a folder causes the Find tool to open. Now I want to know is it possible to roll back the abve changes because due to the above change double click property of the folder is changed to find always. I want the double click property to show the content of the folder.

My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt. Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.
View 2 Replies View Related2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.

View 14 Replies View Relatedwell, this problem started a little while ago, Ive got a 2.93ghz P4, and 1GB memory, so i know my computer is (plenty) fast enough.when i click on the button in the start menu "Turn Off Computer", my PC shows the hourglass, and i cant click on anything, this will go on for about a minute or 2, once it took 5 minutes. then the small box with shutdown options comes up finally, and then after the light blue screen gets to "Shutting Down...". it takes maybe a bit longer than expected but im not to sure about that.

This then has the fly-out menu which used to open only the most recently accessed programs. Typically, after a boot it would show the items which opened in *Start-Up*, the rest were accessible only by hovering the mouse cursor over a button showing downward pointing arrows (more chevron like). This would then open the entire sub menu of programs to choose from. However, in the past week it now opens in that expanded view all the time. There is no sign of the little arrows anymore, and I always end up with a screen full of program lists whenever I go to Start/Programs.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy primary hard drive recently went nuts, so I decided to make my second drive the master. I completely disconnected the former master drive and set the former slave drive as the master. The newer harddrive is 250G and had been added thru XP. I only had some folders with music, video and such saved onto it. I wanted to keep those files so I didn't format the drive. And since they are large I didn't move them off the drive.
Installation proceeded normally until it reached "32 minutes remaining" and showed that it was "setting up network." The system just stays there. (The "new features" messages on the right side of the screen continue to cycle thru their list, and the little progress squares at the lower right continue to flash in sequence.) I had read thru some forums that hardware may be the cause so I removed the following: phone modem card, NIC, graphics card and the sound card. This left me with just the motherboard, floppy drive and cd-rom drive. Rebooted and still freezes at the same spot
I have responded to a question in another conference which asks for help with a failing re-install whith 32 mins to go. and said I would ask in here This happened to me and was sorted by Microsoft help desk (using the last of my 2 free support calls attendant with purchasing a full copy of XP) - by a lady in India and lots of waiting Musak and a high phone bill! - but I can't for the life of me recall the keysrtokes the support lady took me through to "continue the process". View 2 Replies View RelatedI clicked on Windows Explorer and it opened but the left pane did not expand and there was not even a + sign if front of the C: drive to expand it. My shortcut path to Explorer is and has been: %SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,C: and I have it open maximized. It was working just fine about supper time and then I went to do other things and when I came back I had the problem. I have not installed any software nor made any system changes.
