my brother in law runs xp. he asked me to help with the following problem but ive never seen anything like it. all of the shortcuts on his desktop have changed from having an icon and a link appropriate to the shortcut, eg IE explorer, Word, Skpe etc, to an icon for Kodak Easyshare. when you click on any of the icons the shortcut takes you to Kodak Easyshare. You can still access the programs by going to All programs and clicking on the program, you just cant acess them from the desktop. If you go to All Programs, select a program and right click to create a shortcut, it creates a Kodak EasyShare icon which when clicked takes you to Kodak again. Can't figure this out.
So I have no taskbar nor icons on the desktop. Except that all works very well... I have access to the programs and all my documents via the taskmanager. I've been told, by the technicians at the shop where I had bought this pc, that they have heard of such cases often recently, but they didn't try to understand why, they just formatted the hd and reinstalled windows. I am wondering if there's a way to repair this. I've read on some forums that osme adware called "sysu.exe" , "ddm", causes such a problem, bu I haven't those apparently. Otherwise norton , and spybot s&d don't detect anything that might cause this either...
When I D/Load some programmes I get access is denied. I had previouly reformatted my HD and now have drive F, when I try to access certain folders or /and executable programmes access is denied. Currently trying to install Roboform in Firefox
I brought her computer home to use for my school work. Someone signed into the Administrative / Owner name and somehow locked it. We don't have one of those password reset disk that the Windows website says. I have a disk that says "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition System Recovery CD/DVD" I was told if I reinstalled Windows on the computer that it would erase the entire harddrive. There are alot of pictures on the computer, not to mention Microsoft Office, that I don't want to lose. My mom passed away suddenly and while I know her other passwords, this one is different which leads me to believe one of my younger cousins was messing with her computer and did something they didn't mean.Is there anyway possible to reset the password and use the computer without losing all the pictures on it?
When my computer was turned on this morning the desktop shortcuts on my desktop will not open any programs. Non shortcuts such as my computer or outlook express open normally. I have recreated all shortcuts and the new shortcuts still won't open. I have tried the obvious of restarting the computer and I have run my antivirus programs (symantec, spy bot and adaware) w/o anything being found. Can any one give me any ideas of what may fix this issue?
I posted a few days ago about a problem I was having about not being able to access many programs including AIM and other internet based applications.I have determined that something is closing many of my ports, and I have no clue why.I have 2 computers on my home network and mine is the only that is having internet problems. I was curious as to if anyone might know what might be the cause of this.I have formatted multiple times, and all firewalls are off.I have placed myself outside of my router as well and still no go.Just curious if anyone knows a fix.
Is there a way to block access to programs in Xp pro. I've set up a user account but I want to to limit access to chat programs like MSN/Yahoo Messenger.
My Laptop was crashed. I could not recover with recovery disc, so I installed xp Pro from OS from the CD I had for my another PC. Every thing is fine but now I can not access my programs, all though I do see them on my C/program folder.
I have downloaded numerous programs like some online poker games for example and when trying to open the program it says there is an internet connectivity problem but anoher program I downloaded a long time ago connects to the internet just fine, I've tried everything I can think of like turn off the fireall but that does not work So I'm hoping somebody out there can help me,
Using Windows XP Home Explorer 6 - some of my programs can't access the Internet - they can't update or validate themselves. Email (outlook express) works fine and Explorer works but programs that need to access the internet like AutoCAD return an error message that there is no internet connection found.
Can't open IE, control panel, Explore (file manager), My Computer (basically, anything that uses IE) - everything else (including Outlook Express) is ok.The Catch - It works in safe mode Have tried (and failed!): 1) Scanning for viruses - none (HouseCall and Norton scans) 2) Scanning for parasites - none of any consequence (used Spybot) 3) Delete id and create new id (thought maybe the logon id became corrupt especially since it seems to work ok in safe mode) 4) Installed Netscape. Downloaded and reinstalled IE - didn't help. 5) Checked registry - can't find anything that looks out of place...but then again...it IS the registry and I am sure it has to be in there somewhere! 6) Checked running services and processes - nothing out of the ordinary. Seems as though something may have come in WITH the SP2 update -- or that access settings to IE, My Computer, etc. have changed. I have tried all I can think of and can't find the fix for this. Is there a way to UNINSTALL SP2 and restore my settings from 8:00 a.m. yesterday morning? I can get into "remove and install programs" by backdooring it but the SP2 isn't appearing there.
I'm trying to create some more free space on my computer, but when I try to access add/remove programs, the window goes blank and freezes up so I can't even close it.
reinstalled xp b/c of massive problems, i think i installed it overtop of my old installation, i can finally get into windows, but none of my programs are there. If I go to explore I see all of my programs on the c: drive but none of them appear on the start menu, I also see old user names and our documents but can only access them in explore. i tried to copy ms office to the start menu via drag and drop, but when i try to open application it says it is not installed for user.how do i get to my programs in this new installation? I did not delete any partitions when i reinstalled. Is there any awy to access the old user names?
I am unable to access either files or programs in XP. If I go into the Start menu, clicking on my programs or my files freezes the computer.I can go online. I can boot up all programs on the start page, and run them. I can access the five "last" files in Word. I can receive and send Email. I get a baloon message on startup indicating the "you have files waiting to be written to the CD. To see them now, click the baloon". Clicking the baloon freezes the computer.I can't get to the point where I could delete files or programs.
Several people use my computer from time to time, and there are some programs for security reasons that I would prefer them not to use.Is there anyway I can block their access to the programs?
My system specs: Win XP Home with SP1.I am having problems connecting to the internet from programs such as msn messenger, mozilla firefox, various ftp programs and updates.Only IE (6.0) and WindowsUpdate are the programs with internet access. When I try to ping on any IP address (except 127.0.0.1), I am getting the error 65:"PING: transmit failed, error code 65." At the time this problem started: 1. the computer had quite a few viruses on it (like DerBiz/Trojan.Win32.Dialer.gp). 2. we tried to install SP2, but it caused problems with ZoneAlarm and system became very slow. So we uninstalled it.
I used to use my XP professional installed PC in admin mode so far but after too much of spyware problem, created one user account without installation authority. The problem now is, I can't see many programs in start menu of user account, looks like I don't have access to those programs through user account. Sygate firewall icon in system tray has disappeared in admin account but shows up in user account Just now, I installed trillion and I can use it in admin mode but can't see it in user account.I tried to go through control panel --> add/remove programs and checked access tab there but couldn't do much useful.
Is there a way to just let the user access one or 2 program in Xp Pro. For instance, I only want my kids to access internet explorer and that's it. The rest of the Applications and those XP's goodies that are found in the Program are to be hidden. I only want IE to show in the Program or on the desktop. The rest are unaccessible and hidden.
Something has been eroding the quality of my PC.I lost the ability to access programs through the START menu (I have to seek them out via Win Explorer). Now when I am on-line (Internet Explorer) and I click on a link, it usually (not always) freezes and I have to shut it down via Taskmanager.I cannot run a full virus scan because I have a damaged Intel file that causes the PC to freeze whenever the scan touches it. But I do run Ewido and Spybot (fast scans). I used to have McAfee via AOL, but it was KILLING the speed of my PC (start-ups were painful).
Hopefully I can explain my situation without dragging it out to long, but it is involved. The problem is with my wife computer which is an Emachine, Model T3265, running Win XP, Home Edition and IE 7.0.The last time my wife was on the computer was the evening of Aug 14, at which time she had been playing the card game Spider Solitaire. I am also listed as a user but only to keep it running for my wife. When she tried to use the computer the next day, Aug 15 she kept getting the message Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.Having come up with the same results as my wife, here is what I have been able to determine.
Be it from the Start Menu, Desk Top or Program Folder, the end result is the above .message. .It didn't matter whose account I was in, mine or my wife, or if I tried to open an executable file or program directly or with a shortcut, the results were the same. However I did find a couple of things that were quite odd. The items stored in the task bar at the bottom right side of the task bar could be opened, but only from here..These programs consisted of the Virus Program, Trend Microsoft Pecillin, messenger program and the like. I also found that if I opened Documents and Settings and then opened either my wife or my personal folder and then went to Favorites I was able to access the internet. I could not do is run Restore from system tools and when I tried use the run function in the start menu I got a pop up window which said Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want a shortcut placed on the desktop.Short of doing a full format and re-installation can you tell me what has happened and how to fix it?
I am trying to set up my computer so that my wife can use it, but not have access to all my files and programs etc...I have created her user account, but whenever i try and switch users it hangs at a Red screen, sometimes with a box saying "Applying personal setting Internet Explorer 6".
setting up more than one user logon for windows xp home edition w/ sp2 installed (using fat32). What I would like to acheive (if possible) is to limit my teenagers (2) access to certain files and programs. More specifically programs such as windows explorer (including right-click on START button), access to the "RUN" command, control panel, and other system controlling programs. I have searched on C-Net and microsoft, finding bits and peices but not all together in 1 post and not a step by step. I am not afraid to edit the registry. Also I do not want to convert this comp to ntfs (unless there is a way to back up a massive amount of data without a cd/dvd burner, as I am under the impression that a re-install of XP and reformatting of hard drive is required to switch to ntfs). What would be ideal (and maybe easier to do?) would be to have teenage-user1 and teenage-user2 logon bring up only a desktop with no taskbar and/or START button, thus allowing only access to the programs that I shortcut to the desktop (this thought just occurred to me while typing this).
These children are 15 and 16 and are smart enough to type a google search for password/registry/command prompt hacks and crackers and such. I haven't seen anything in regaurds to what I am looking for all on 1 system or complete in 1 post/step-by-step. Possibly I am not typing the correct search words, but seems alot of text for a search ( am not typing "the" "and" etc. and am using/trying as many buzzwords as I can think of...) and I get no way too much irrelavent and sometimes confusing info or no matches at all. I may be making a mountain out of a mole hill with how I want to do this, as it probably has been done before, if so a link(s) would be much appreciated as would any advice from "seasoned/in-the-know" users/programmers.
I didn't establish User a/cs when I first set up my PC. I have since done so but now I can't access some progs because they are for Admin. I have tried starting in Safe Mode pressing F8 but I get an error mssge - Keyboard error. This means that when I do get into Safe Mode I can't do anything to change the settings.
I downloaded a program and found out that I cannot delete it. Every time I turn on my pc It comes out and every time I log out, it stay on on my pc. So, I deleted it and then I discovered that all my programs became a executable link.
2005 MCE WIN XP, if i go to START, ALL PROGRAMS, and scan thru my programs, the amount of time to scroll thru programs is about 3-4 seconds, before it closes out, also RENAMING a folder, on desktop, same thing happens, for instance, renaming a folder PICTURES, i get to PIC, then it kicks me out. I have OPtical wireless mouse, replaced batteries with fully charged ones, no difference, also mouse 12 inches from reciever.
Windows XP SP2 home edition , Suddenly all my Icons on my desktop and in my menues and programs have turned transparent , which makes them really hard to see , can any one tell me how i can turn them back into solid bright Icons without any transparency.
