I have a new WinXP Home Edition laptop (Sharp MP30). I've configured the power options so that it never goes into standby whenit's hooked up to power. But it does anyway. In fact, no matter how I try to configure the power options, I can't keep it from going into standby after, oh, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, something like
that. (When it has been idle, of course - it's not crazy enough to go into standby when I'm working) Now, this isn't fatal, but I'd like to find out how to do it. I have a vague recollection of reading that sometimes the computers themselves override the software's no-standby instructions and just do it anyway.
I just installed XP Pro SP2 onto this toshiba laptop (fairly good;1.4ghz intel celeron M,512 ddr ram, wireless nic,ati graphics and such) and it seems that standby and hibernate wont work AT ALL. Standby is grayed out in the turn off computer menu and the hibernate tab does not exist in the power options utility in control panel. I've googled around a bit and found no specific option in the BIOS to enable or disable it and as far as i know this laptop SHOULD support it...i mean come on what kind of laptop doesn't standby or hibernate?
i messed around with it for a while changing zoom, stretch, dot to dot ect .Finnaly i got the tv's view mode to normal no stretch and filled all 32" perfectly with my desktop and the resolution was something like 2040x1200 or 1920x1080 not sure exactly..i should have wrote that down but close to that..

I have a new Dell Inspiron Media version of Win XP- a Laptop I am using as a desktop replacement. It simply won't remain on Standby for longer than 10 or 12 minutes and then goes back to desktop and then in time, the screensaver.
KaZaA, one of the most famous P2P programs tends to hog the processor, this results in the termination of the program after few seconds. This tweak can be used on systems that have the above mentioned problem. Here it is...1. Download and install KaZaA.2. Right-click on the shortcut of the program and click on "Run as...", this will prompt you to select a user to run the progam as..do not forget to select the "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity".3. Click OK and everything is back to normal..happy downloading!!Here is a final note on what I just discovered..you cannot change the options while running in the protected mode..so just run it in the normal mode, I mean the mode that hogs your CPU...change the necessary options and close down before KaZaA terminates...this should do the trick!Cheers!
I have a computer that I formatted the hard drive on. Then installed Windows XP Pro. When it boots up, it goes to a black screen and has Windows XP Pro and Windows XP listed with the Win XP Pro selected and boots to it in 15 seconds or so if nothing is selected. I have read somewhere about this before and have NO clue where I read it, but does anyone know how to get rid of the option (Win XP) that really doesn't even exist on the hard drive?
I have ended up with 4 different options for XP Pro when my computer starts. This is, basically, as a result of me re-installing Widows a couple of times to try and solve a very slow running system (more help needed there but I will start a new thread for that). How do I remove the 3 unwanted start options?
I recently reformatted and repartitioned hard drive and reinstalled XP. I messed something up because now when I boot comp, I'm given three different Windows XP options to boot even though I have only one instance of XP installed. What do I have to do to get rid of the two unwanted boot options?
my brother always told me not to use standby, but i find it would be convienent now, is it bad to use? cause its going to get hot in here with my big a** tower, my roommate has a laptop
i know when hibernate is working cause i hit the power button to bring it back to its previous state...however, i am working on writing an application and need to use standby, so last night i was trying out standby on my pc...i set it to shutdown the HDD after a time period and go to standby (which brings me to another question - when using standby, should you set the system to go to standby BEFORE turning of HDD or vice-versa? meaning, i have it set to go to standby in 15 mins and turn off HDD in 20 mins, or should that be the other way?)...i come back an hour later and the fans are running - which i suspect is due to my USB mouse enabled to bring it out of standby and i'll change this feature this evening...so i hit a key on the keyboard and it almost instantly came back to my desktop, almost like i only had the monitor go off after a time period...
Computer is in Standby, I click enter, then Internet Explorer but I can't get the cursor to appear, then I get the Internet Explorer is not responding message.
What exactly do I have to do to keep my pc from going on standby?
I have disabled powermanagement in bios, in display settings under the Power settings they are all set to Never hibernate is unchecked but it still keeps going to standby
I have Acer Aspire-Windows XP Professional,I have Acer Aspire-Windows XP Professional and have a problem with my PC: it doesnt go on standby by itself, I cant understand why. I looked under Screen Saver POWER and system stand by it is set to 10 mins. I can get it to stand by pressing the button.
Monitor goes into standby. Pc looks to be on, but a reboot is required to get it back on it's feet again. Dont think its a dodgy moniter cable. Could be overheating, but it's never happened before. Started last night. PC has been on for all day and every day nigh on 4 years. Can you think of anything that could be giving? Is it possible that a corrupted hdd could casue this - because I know mine are quite messed up. Cant think of much more than this. I've checked system logs and they turn up nothing in particular. When the pc turns off, it's under no abnormal degree of strain, nor is there any patturn in when it turns off.
I have re-installed windows XP home using the OEM Key on my laptop. Prior to the re-install, it would allow me to put the computer onto hibernate or standby, now post re-install, I cannot put the machine into standy by.
After loading a couple of programs (TurboCad and Adobe Photodeluxe), when I c,ose the lid to my Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop I get a warning sound and the following message on the screen, "The device driver for the 'Standard 101/102-key or Microsft Natural PS/2 keyboard' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to up date this driver.
The problem does , in fact, persisit. I had only one program application running and closing it had no effect. I went into Device manager and opened properties>driver tab for the keyboard. Clicked 'update driver' and was asked to insert the XP CD. no surprise it came beck with I have the latest driver installed. I created a restore point prior to installing the programs, but I'd like to avoid doing it over again. Anyone got any idea of a way to fix this without doing a restore?
I've seen very clear instructions on how to put a PC or laptop into 'standby' or 'hibernation'. but I can't find ANYWHERE how to bring the PC or laptop out of standby or hibernation. Can someone please tell me1. How to come out of 'standby'?2. How to come out of 'hibernation'?
i can't get my Dell Dimension 8100 (640MB RAM, 1.3 GHz P4) to go into standby or hibernation mode. When I manually put the computer in standby or hibernate, it wakes back up in about 5 minutes or so. I've looked/read the articles in the knowledge base, which mentioned that there was a problem with SP1 and USB mass storage devices. Well, I've got SP2 and there still is some problem going on!
I need a little favor, recently I've just discovered by accident that my Dell PC couldn't go into Standby Mode (nor Hibernate), everything froze, my mouse pointer wouldn't move and my keyboard was sort of "dead," like the system froze (on the "Preparing to Standby/Hibernate" screen) or something like that.I did a search on Google as well as this forum, all fetched me different solutions, I've tried quite a few but nothing seems to work I've a Dell Dimension 5150, here are the specs, my HD is 80GB instead of 160.. Running on Windows XP Home Edition.
I am using Acer TravelMate 5720. Till yesterday everything was working fine. But from today when i close the laptop lid the system does not goes into standby. i checked the settings in Power options. There i kept it to standby option only.Me using XP with SP2.
First of all, after clicking "shut down" my computer would go to a screen labeled "It is now safe to shut down your computer." I have encountered this before, and I went to turn on APM in power settings. However, I can no longer go to stand by anymore
I run xp and have a HP Pavilion 9600. I've never used stand by before, but I have a standby key on my keyboard that my 11 month old son convenantly hits everytime I am online. I've tried hitting return, space, esc, and so forth but nothing brings it out, and I have to do a cold shut down.
I have a HP 2800 (2.8) AMD Athlon running XP home. When the computer goes to standby (power switch flashing) and I touch the keyboard to bring it out of standby, the computer turns itself off. The fan seem to be working ok.
My Daughter has a dell inspiron 1200 running XP that is about 5 yrs old and had slowed to a crawl, so she bought a new one when she graduated from college. I reformated and reinstalled XP and all the drivers and added a gig of ram. Runs great now but now the standby or hibernate is no longer active and I can't figure out what to do.
Hibernate and Standby were working fine on the machine. But since about a week. Both the Standby and Hibernate feature are not working. The detailed explanation is given below. I have three account profiles all set to admin. The computer does go on standby or hibernate when on the welcome screen but only if no one is logged on. If I have logged on, and then i select standby or hibernate nothing happens. After this if i try to shut down the computer it kind of hangs halfway through the shutdown process. It seems that it is trying to hibernate and shutdown at the same time.
If I have not requested for a hibernate or standby, and then try to shutdown the computer. It shuts down properly. if I log-off to the welcome screen and no other account is logged on then also the hibernate and standby work fine. I have tried to run system restore, but when it boots up in the restore process, i get a message that no changes have been made try another restore point... i have tried many points but it does not work.... am totally confused. I have also reinstalled the patch on the Microsoft website for XP where a machine with more than 2Gb of ram needs to hibernate.
My Dell Mini 10V netbook, with Windows XP, SP3 won't standby or hibernate. It hangs at the "Preparing to Standby". I have to completely shut it off by holding the power switch. It reboots fine. It will shutdown without delay, but it doesn't save the desktop layout. I've tried the clean boot and it still doesn't standby. I'm doing the testing without the external monitor, keyboard, or mouse and it doesn't make any difference. It has all the original hardware. It would standby when I first got it and I have another Mini 10V that does standby and hibernate correctly.
Looking for work-around solution standby/hibernate failure in WinXP system after installation of PGP 6.x.
Problem is completely described in Microsoft KB article Q-314118 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314118/en-us
I am presently using PGP 6.5.1 and want to keep it. I'm using it for the PGPdisk features with encrypted volumes (directories). It works fine in WinXP with both existing PGD volumes that I have (from previous systems) and it also works fine with newly created PGD volumes. The only problem is that it prevents WinXP from entering Standby modes when I attempt this power down feature in WinXP for my laptop.........
I am under the impression that standby mode is compromising my OS. I only began using standby about a year ago and for the past 6 months or so my system has been less responsive and has even locked up a few times. It is an older system to begin with, but the problem is much worse when resuming from standby. I am mostly just curious if other people have had the same issue with XP Pro`s standby mode.
