Standby Mode Is Compromising OS?
May 7, 2009
I am under the impression that standby mode is compromising my OS. I only began using standby about a year ago and for the past 6 months or so my system has been less responsive and has even locked up a few times. It is an older system to begin with, but the problem is much worse when resuming from standby. I am mostly just curious if other people have had the same issue with XP Pro`s standby mode.

After loading a couple of programs (TurboCad and Adobe Photodeluxe), when I c,ose the lid to my Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop I get a warning sound and the following message on the screen, "The device driver for the 'Standard 101/102-key or Microsft Natural PS/2 keyboard' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to up date this driver.
The problem does , in fact, persisit. I had only one program application running and closing it had no effect. I went into Device manager and opened properties>driver tab for the keyboard. Clicked 'update driver' and was asked to insert the XP CD. no surprise it came beck with I have the latest driver installed. I created a restore point prior to installing the programs, but I'd like to avoid doing it over again. Anyone got any idea of a way to fix this without doing a restore?

I have a compact presario 3080 notebook running windows xp home with sp2 installed. I am unable to use the standby mode, the only option shown 1n the power settings menu for "what to do when I close the lid" is "do nothing" and the standby button is grayed out in the shutdown menu. This used to work, and I am not aware of installing anything that might have caused the problem. I have tried restoring to earlier dates with no luck. I have contacted HP and they tell me the only thing I can do is a complete restore to get this function working again. how I can fix this problem without doing the restore? If not can anyone tell me how to back up Windows xp so that I don't have to download all the updates again?

Recently I had a power outage in my dorm. My computer was on standby mode when it happened. The computer booted normally when the power came back and it ran fine. Then I put the computer in standby mode again because I had to go somewhere. I come back and resume from standby and instead of normally booting to the windows password log on screen, the computer restarts. Also, the LED light on my case that normally blinks on and off during standby, blinks briefly for the first few seconds and then disappears. This never happened before.
I have tried rebooting and shutting down the computer, but every time I go to standby and resume from standby, it restarts and then goes the windows log on screen. I have no idea what is going on. This problem did not happen before the power outage.

But then after a few seconds of it going into the mode, the computer will start back up. I am running windows XP home. The computer model is a MDG computer running a intel motherboard and processor. I have checked and played with the bios setting and it does not help.

Sometimes after using the system for a couple of days, my monitor "forgets" to shift into standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. What causes this forgetfulness? Is there a fix for it? One fix that always works is a restart. Is there a less drastic fix that would leave everything up and running?

The Toshiba Power Saver is set for the screen and HDD to shut off after 30 minutes of no activity. The screen saver is set to go after 10 minutes but after 30 minutes the screen saver stops and the normal screen comes up. I tried setting to a different power setting by right clicking the desktop and going to properties and setting it to "Portable/Laptop" but it did the same thing. Is there a way to fix this? My OS is XP Media Center and my Toshiba Satellite is a A100/A105 series.

I run Windows XP Home. When I close my notebook and / or put it into standby mode it won't come out, it just gives me a black screen and I have to power down manually. Also, when I try to put it into hibernation mode, it gives a blue error screen that says the system has shut down Windows to avoid damage.

How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

How should I set it up so the system won't hang after overnight standby? My current settings: With AC adapter plugged in:
Turn off monitor: Never
Turn off hard disk: Never
System standby: Never
System hibernates: Never

Whenever the computer is booting into windows or into windows (within 20 minutes) the video cuts off and goes into something like a standby mode except the only way i can get it to boot back is to reboot computer. If i put a video card in and don't use on board video the computer freezes when i imagine it would normally black out. It never does this in the Bio's.

Just recently I've started to lose my USB cable modem connection while on standby. This was not occurring previously. Obviously some setting has gotten changed and I don't know how it happened, I'm relatively certain its in my Widows XP Home Edition software.By trial and error I have learned to reconnect by going to the control panel, network connections, right-clicking on the "Local area connection" heading" and clicking on "disable", which changes the status from "limited or no connection" to "disabled". I then right-click on the heading again and click on "enable". This causes a reconnection. Obviously, I would rather not have to go thru this process each time I go on standby.Since I have a USB connection, a tech advisor at another support forum has already had me do the following; Control Panel/System/Hardware/DeviceManager/
UniversalSerialBusControllers/PowerManagementtab(s) and uncheck each of the (4) options to shut down on standby to save power. For whatever reason, this didn't work, and now he's suggesting that I get an ethernet connection instead. I'm sure that would be superior and maybe solve the problem (and maybe not), but I don't have an ethernet card and I also may soon have to revert to a dial-up connection due to cost..I also confess to disabling the system timer [under system devices] but not knowing what that really meant. What I do know, however, is that the connection is still shutting down on standby.

I'm using a new Dell Dimension 4700 with a Pentium 4 3 Gig XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 2. Recently Windows update ran automatically and ate my computer!
I called Microsoft Support and apparently fixed the problem which was a double installation of video drivers from Dell. (Which made my screen go black with a white statement "Cannot display this video mode".) After we got the silly video thing fixed
my Standby option is grayed out and I can't figure out how to get it back

My Dell Dimension 5000 (Win XP Home) which has worked fine for 2 yrs now starts in standby mode 90% of the time. Pressing and holding the on/off button only shuts it down. The box never starts to power up - I just get the on/off button flashing orange. If it does start up (after trying 20 times) it works perfectly. I've replaced the internal battery, disk space and memory are good, isolated the power supply, disabled Standby and Hibernate in Control Panel and BIOS. Regularly virus and malware checked, disk defragged etc. No new h/w installed.

For some reason my computer won't enter standby mode on its own. Most of the time it won't start a screen saver either. I have it programmed to start the screen saver after 3 minutes and to enter standby mode after 15 minutes. However, I'll come back an hour later only to find that the battery has been completely drained. Anyone know why my computer won't enter standby mode or start its screen saver?

My laptop (the same one I've had for over two years) suddenly won't enter standby mode at all. When I close the laptop, it just hangs on the "entering standby mode" screen and drains the battery. When I open it up again, it shows that screen, and I have to press the power button to turn it off completely and start all over. When I try to put it in standby mode manually (by selecting it in the "turn off computer" options, the same thing happens. It seemingly started out of the blue and Every time I close it now, I have to completely shut it down, which is a pain.

I have a HP Media Center Desktop PC with Windows XP SP2. I had no problem using my Screen Saver or Standby Mode when I had dial-up internet service. I decided to go with Starband Satellite Internet Service and I have had problems ever since. My PC goes into Standby Mode with no problem but will not stay, after a time my monitor and PC come back on, at times my Screen Saver fails to come on. I have checked my power settings and reset them, they are the same as they were before. The modem is always on but if I unplug the power cord Standby Mode and Screen Saver work normally. Starband says the problem is not because of their syatem. I would appreciate help to correct this issue.
