Monitor Goes Into Standby
Sep 15, 2005
Monitor goes into standby. Pc looks to be on, but a reboot is required to get it back on it's feet again. Dont think its a dodgy moniter cable. Could be overheating, but it's never happened before. Started last night. PC has been on for all day and every day nigh on 4 years. Can you think of anything that could be giving? Is it possible that a corrupted hdd could casue this - because I know mine are quite messed up. Cant think of much more than this. I've checked system logs and they turn up nothing in particular. When the pc turns off, it's under no abnormal degree of strain, nor is there any patturn in when it turns off.

Sometimes after using the system for a couple of days, my monitor "forgets" to shift into standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. What causes this forgetfulness? Is there a fix for it? One fix that always works is a restart. Is there a less drastic fix that would leave everything up and running?

I entered my XP run PC into standby yesterday but as it would not resume later, I turned it off using the power button. Now it won't wake up again. I have been sitting in front of a blank screen for 3 hours. The monitor displays "no video signal", so I exchanged monitors but the other one stays blank too. The pc appears to be running but will not boot. I have entered Windows CD to restore but it won't even boot that.

When Windows adds a new monitor using the standard driver, can it detect the aspect ratio? When I hooked up mine, all the resolution choice were for 4:3 monitors. There were no widescreen options. It should choose the monitor's native resolution on its own if the monitor is an LCD.

I have a old Dell computer which I brought a 24" Dell HD monitor. I upgraded it with a new graphics card which has both VGA and HD capability hook-ups. Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?

I replace my old LCD monitors (Dell 1905s) with new acer P223w's. I have a dual monitor display.I power off both monitors with one switch that cuts off the power. When I do this however, Windows makes the sound like a device has been disconnected and it messes up my monitor settings. This is very annoying and it didn't happen with my other monitors nor does it happen on my other Windows XP system with different monitors. It's like Windows is trying to be "smart" by thinking the monitor is gone. I do not want Windows to care if the monitor is powered off.

I wonder if it is possible to switch off the computer's monitor manually.
System Control / Energy provides the possibility to define how long the
computer must idle to disable the monitor. I want to do that "by hand". Is
that possible?

My computer keeps switching itself to standby on its own after 20-30 minutes.
I have checked in my power settings and it is supposed to be set to always on,
The computer is pretty much brand new from Dell so maybe it is some factory setting.

how do you know if Standby is working?
i know when hibernate is working cause i hit the power button to bring it back to its previous state...however, i am working on writing an application and need to use standby, so last night i was trying out standby on my pc...i set it to shutdown the HDD after a time period and go to standby (which brings me to another question - when using standby, should you set the system to go to standby BEFORE turning of HDD or vice-versa? meaning, i have it set to go to standby in 15 mins and turn off HDD in 20 mins, or should that be the other way?)...i come back an hour later and the fans are running - which i suspect is due to my USB mouse enabled to bring it out of standby and i'll change this feature this evening...so i hit a key on the keyboard and it almost instantly came back to my desktop, almost like i only had the monitor go off after a time period...
so how do you know if standby is working?

After loading a couple of programs (TurboCad and Adobe Photodeluxe), when I c,ose the lid to my Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop I get a warning sound and the following message on the screen, "The device driver for the 'Standard 101/102-key or Microsft Natural PS/2 keyboard' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to up date this driver.
The problem does , in fact, persisit. I had only one program application running and closing it had no effect. I went into Device manager and opened properties>driver tab for the keyboard. Clicked 'update driver' and was asked to insert the XP CD. no surprise it came beck with I have the latest driver installed. I created a restore point prior to installing the programs, but I'd like to avoid doing it over again. Anyone got any idea of a way to fix this without doing a restore?

i can't get my Dell Dimension 8100 (640MB RAM, 1.3 GHz P4) to go into
standby or hibernation mode. When I manually put the computer in standby or
hibernate, it wakes back up in about 5 minutes or so.
I've looked/read the articles in the knowledge base, which mentioned that
there was a problem with SP1 and USB mass storage devices. Well, I've got SP2
and there still is some problem going on!

I need a little favor, recently I've just discovered by accident that my Dell PC couldn't go into Standby Mode (nor Hibernate), everything froze, my mouse pointer wouldn't move and my keyboard was sort of "dead," like the system froze (on the "Preparing to Standby/Hibernate" screen) or something like that.I did a search on Google as well as this forum, all fetched me different solutions, I've tried quite a few but nothing seems to work I've a Dell Dimension 5150, here are the specs, my HD is 80GB instead of 160.. Running on Windows XP Home Edition.

Hibernate and Standby were working fine on the machine. But since about a week. Both the Standby and Hibernate feature are not working. The detailed explanation is given below. I have three account profiles all set to admin. The computer does go on standby or hibernate when on the welcome screen but only if no one is logged on. If I have logged on, and then i select standby or hibernate nothing happens. After this if i try to shut down the computer it kind of hangs halfway through the shutdown process. It seems that it is trying to hibernate and shutdown at the same time.
If I have not requested for a hibernate or standby, and then try to shutdown the computer. It shuts down properly. if I log-off to the welcome screen and no other account is logged on then also the hibernate and standby work fine. I have tried to run system restore, but when it boots up in the restore process, i get a message that no changes have been made try another restore point... i have tried many points but it does not work.... am totally confused. I have also reinstalled the patch on the Microsoft website for XP where a machine with more than 2Gb of ram needs to hibernate.

My Dell Mini 10V netbook, with Windows XP, SP3 won't standby or hibernate. It hangs at the "Preparing to Standby". I have to completely shut it off by holding the power switch. It reboots fine. It will shutdown without delay, but it doesn't save the desktop layout. I've tried the clean boot and it still doesn't standby. I'm doing the testing without the external monitor, keyboard, or mouse and it doesn't make any difference. It has all the original hardware. It would standby when I first got it and I have another Mini 10V that does standby and hibernate correctly.

Looking for work-around solution standby/hibernate failure in WinXP system after installation of PGP 6.x.
Problem is completely described in Microsoft KB
article Q-314118 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314118/en-us
I am presently using PGP 6.5.1 and want to keep it. I'm using it for the PGPdisk features with encrypted
volumes (directories). It works fine in WinXP with both existing PGD volumes that I have (from previous
systems) and it also works fine with newly created PGD volumes. The only problem is that it prevents WinXP from entering Standby modes when I attempt this power down feature in WinXP for my laptop.........

I am under the impression that standby mode is compromising my OS. I only began using standby about a year ago and for the past 6 months or so my system has been less responsive and has even locked up a few times. It is an older system to begin with, but the problem is much worse when resuming from standby. I am mostly just curious if other people have had the same issue with XP Pro`s standby mode.
