An Operating System With Multiple Log In

Apr 16, 2005

As I said, I'm new to XP, so I'm new to having an OS with multiple logins (I never set up user accounts with Win98). I set my new Dell up with two user accounts (mine and my wife's), and for some strange reason, I cannot get any sounds to play with windows "system events", such as signing on, signing off, error messages, minimizing/maximizing windows, etc. I have always assigned specific .wav files to specific system events without any problem on my Win98 PC, so I did the same thing with this one. I can assign sounds to event without any problem, and when I click the "play" button in the dialog box when setting up these sounds, everything sounds great. I've saved the scheme under my name, and told the system to apply it, but I get nothing (by the way, I think these worked the first time I turned on the PC out of the box, but they soon quit - long before I tried assigning specific .wav files to them). But when I change users to my wife's account, al! l the default settings work just fine (I have not attempted to change her sounds).

Multiple Operating Systems

Jun 1, 2005

I bought a new dell dimension 4700 for my sister and two months later it crashed. Well she spent 6 hours on the phone with dell and all they did was a half assed restore which allowed her to keep her files but everything else barely worked. She brought it to me and I formatted the drive in xp setup and reinstalled xp pro. The computer runs great but when it boots up it asks me which operating sytem I want to run; the old xp home or the new xp pro. Then when you select the xp pro it boots up but that white line goes by real slow and it takes a minute or so to boot. Once it is booted it runs like a champ but how do I get rid of the old xp pro. I don't get it since I formatted the drive and removed the old partitions.

Install Multiple Operating Systems From Single USB Drive

Nov 5, 2009

At work, we install a lot of different operating systems on computers, both for use within the school and for staff members' personal computers. In order to make things easier, we want to be able to create a USB pendrive that contains all of the operating systems we want to use and some form of menu to start the installation of each. The problem is, I've not been able to find guides that explain how to do exactly what we want.

Multiple Windows On System

Oct 30, 2008

I originally had Windows xp media center 2004 installed on my computer. When I tried to download the SP3 update, my computer froze. I then tried a repair using my original discs but Windows loaded and new windows2 system on my computer and my original windows no longer works ( I get an error message that Windows/system32/system files are corrupt or missing. I have reinstalled most of my applications on the windows2 system but everytime I reboot, I am asked whether I want to boot from windows media center or windows xp professional (which gives me an error message and does not boot). How can I get rid of the older windows version without compromising my new windows 2 operating system.

Installing On System With Multiple Drives

Feb 16, 2009

i am reinstalling windows on a new partition of a new drive and I have several harddrives. when I boot from the windows xp setup cd and it lists all the drives, the one i want to install windows on is currently listed as drive G, but I want it to become drive C. If I just select to install on drive G will it change it to drive C? or do i have to do the thing where I unplug all the drives except the one I want and do the install and then plug the other ones back in afterwards? (i'm reinstalling bc i tried it before and windows ended up on the current drive G, which used to be drive J bc I forgot to unplug some usb devices..)

Multiple Files Running In System

Oct 6, 2005

I've been looking at some of the different processes currently running on my computer, and I recognize most of them. For those that I don't recognize, I usually Google them. Everything is fine, but I was just wondering if its normal to have multiple of the same process? For example, there are currently 5 SVCHOST.EXE's running, two in SYSTEM, two in NETWORK SERVICE, and one in LOCAL SERVICE.

Multiple User Profiles Effecting The System

Apr 19, 2007

We are running windows XP SP2 on a large domain. We have recently had several users login in that are somehow getting new profiles. This seems to be affecting only the XP machines. Roaming profiles are not being used. We have been editing the registry and repointing to their original profiles, deleting the newly created profiles and this returns their original desktop and solves the problem temporarily, but it continues to happen.

Multiple Services Stopping And System Fails To Run

May 31, 2007

We are running into a problem where multiple services on a Windows XP SP2 system fail to run. This is happening on different brands of systems at different customer locations, and so far has eluded our ability to detect a pattern. The symptom is a user complaining that an application fails to start or to work correctly. When we examine the system, a number of services have stopped or failed to start, with no reason given. We haven't systematically documented what services failed to start (the list changes when the screen is refreshed), but the list published at seems to be typical. The workaround I have used is to go through the services that are not running, set each of them to automatically restart on first and second failure (a tedious task), then restart the system. This has usually fixed the problem for that user, but doesn't explain what is causing the failure to begin with.

Multiple Player Slow Map Loads - System Error Shutdown Games

Aug 12, 2002

I ran into this problem in both WindowsME and XP. While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game. The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems. After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

System Wont Load Operating System / Unable To Format Disks?

Aug 19, 2009

I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.

I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

System Restore A Good Idea - Logon Operating System

Apr 29, 2008

The situation: A reasonably new PC, clean and working properly. Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.

System Recovery Fatal Error - No Operating System Found

Sep 12, 2008

I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?

This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
