View 3 RepliesI'd like to create a .bat which closes multiple .exe processes just by opening it: 1. I open the file from my desktop 2. File closes for example svchost.exe and explorer.exe and finally the file itself. This is because I don't need some programs, which open when Windows starts, every time.

I can create partitions okay (using Partition Manager 8.5 se) but I don't know how to set up, or edit, the Master Boot Record or whatever else is involved.I shall want to make a clean install of another XP OS.If there is some (preferably free) software that assists with this that'd be good.I have a spare PC on which I can make my mistakes too!

View 2 Replies View RelatedUp to one hour ago, I had a multiple boot set up on my computer.Windows XP
Windows Vista Home Premium (one)Windows Vista Home Premium (two). At boot up, I got a screen showing all three installatons, and I used the up/downkey on my keyboard to select whichever i wanted to run.One hour ago I reinstalled XP.On startup, the opportunity to select which OS to run no longer appears. Instead, the computer boots directly into XP.I tried playing around with Vista Boot Pro, unsuccessfully. The three OS are listed and the Vista HP (one) shows up as default. But rebooting only boots into XP.I tried Repair Your Computer from the Vista installation disc. But the chance to click the operating system I want to repair is not available. Instead another window appears, which says there is a problem with the boot, and do I want to repair it and restart. I click on Yes, but it restarts and still boots straight into XP again.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI originally had Windows xp media center 2004 installed on my computer. When I tried to download the SP3 update, my computer froze. I then tried a repair using my original discs but Windows loaded and new windows2 system on my computer and my original windows no longer works ( I get an error message that Windows/system32/system files are corrupt or missing. I have reinstalled most of my applications on the windows2 system but everytime I reboot, I am asked whether I want to boot from windows media center or windows xp professional (which gives me an error message and does not boot). How can I get rid of the older windows version without compromising my new windows 2 operating system.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAs I said, I'm new to XP, so I'm new to having an OS with multiple logins (I never set up user accounts with Win98). I set my new Dell up with two user accounts (mine and my wife's), and for some strange reason, I cannot get any sounds to play with windows "system events", such as signing on, signing off, error messages, minimizing/maximizing windows, etc. I have always assigned specific .wav files to specific system events without any problem on my Win98 PC, so I did the same thing with this one. I can assign sounds to event without any problem, and when I click the "play" button in the dialog box when setting up these sounds, everything sounds great. I've saved the scheme under my name, and told the system to apply it, but I get nothing (by the way, I think these worked the first time I turned on the PC out of the box, but they soon quit - long before I tried assigning specific .wav files to them). But when I change users to my wife's account, al! l the default settings work just fine (I have not attempted to change her sounds).
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am reinstalling windows on a new partition of a new drive and I have several harddrives. when I boot from the windows xp setup cd and it lists all the drives, the one i want to install windows on is currently listed as drive G, but I want it to become drive C. If I just select to install on drive G will it change it to drive C? or do i have to do the thing where I unplug all the drives except the one I want and do the install and then plug the other ones back in afterwards? (i'm reinstalling bc i tried it before and windows ended up on the current drive G, which used to be drive J bc I forgot to unplug some usb devices..)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been looking at some of the different processes currently running on my computer, and I recognize most of them. For those that I don't recognize, I usually Google them. Everything is fine, but I was just wondering if its normal to have multiple of the same process? For example, there are currently 5 SVCHOST.EXE's running, two in SYSTEM, two in NETWORK SERVICE, and one in LOCAL SERVICE.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe are running windows XP SP2 on a large domain. We have recently had several users login in that are somehow getting new profiles. This seems to be affecting only the XP machines. Roaming profiles are not being used. We have been editing the registry and repointing to their original profiles, deleting the newly created profiles and this returns their original desktop and solves the problem temporarily, but it continues to happen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWe are running into a problem where multiple services on a Windows XP SP2 system fail to run. This is happening on different brands of systems at different customer locations, and so far has eluded our ability to detect a pattern. The symptom is a user complaining that an application fails to start or to work correctly. When we examine the system, a number of services have stopped or failed to start, with no reason given. We haven't systematically documented what services failed to start (the list changes when the screen is refreshed), but the list published at seems to be typical. The workaround I have used is to go through the services that are not running, set each of them to automatically restart on first and second failure (a tedious task), then restart the system. This has usually fixed the problem for that user, but doesn't explain what is causing the failure to begin with.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSATA Drive not recognized as boot drive on XP installation.Need to create an Xp boot sector.I have been working on this for days. Successfully installed once and ended up with corrupted files on the Win98 partition, so want to get it right this time. (Don't remember how I did the "successful" install - after several days of various problems - most of which are now solved - I am a little brain-dead.What I am looking for is a way to create an XP boot on the SATA drive. I assume this means changing the MBR.
System: MotherB: Asus A7V600 with VIA Chipset
Drives: 0 120gb SATA; 1 15GB IDE; 2 10GB IDE
Current Status:Win98 and WinXP both operational but no dual boot. Win98 was installed first. Both systems were a clean install. Both systems installed on FAT32 in seperate partitions on the SATA drive. Computer startup simply goes into Win98, as there is no XP boot sector on the proper drive......

View 6 Replies View RelatedI ran into this problem in both WindowsME and XP. While in multiplayer mode in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I would get excessive page file activity which would get progressively worse. Map load times would constantly increase as each new map was loaded until the system reported WOLF.exe had caused and error and would shutdown the game. The solution for my system is to set both the Desktop AND game color to 16-bit. Also, set both to the same resolution. I like 1280 x 1024, but that may be too high for some systems. After this tweak, my map load times went from >1 min to between 10 and 20 seconds. Right where a P4 1.5 with 256 megs should be.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to create a system restore disc, like the ones provided with new pc's?I have just used the restore disc for my brothers pc after many problems with corrupt system files that I couldn't repair. We have everything running ok at the moment and are about to install a new dvd writer.I intend to set a system restore point, but if the problem we have just recovered from should resurface, where I could not access windows I would like to be able to use the system restore disc in the future.Assuming that changing hardware would render the manufacturers restore disc useless, how can I create a disc that will be as straightforward to use as the original?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had to reinstall an .inf file and it called for files on my XP CD. The problem is that the XP CD is the original RTM version and my system has been updated to SP1 and SP2. The installation program wanted to install older versions of the files from the CD over the existing versions. I found some but not all the files I needed for the installation in the folder "Service Pack Files."Is there some way to create a CD that contains all the current system files that I need to repair XP SP2. Sort of a current snapshot. It would not have to be an installation disk, just a repair disk.It would be nice to be able to get a installation disk that is current without having to pay for a new full version of XP. After all these years my system is so garbaged up that dumping it and starting over is appealing. I do not want to start with my RTM and then run all the upgrades, it would take forever. Microsoft must realize that there are a lot of people with
the same problem. Perhaps someone could convince them to come up with a cleanup tool.

I've tried a couple of things suggested like disabling restore points then enabling it, letting it just sit idle and I've checked that I have enough room ( there's lots of room ). When I start my computer, I get an error message that reads: "Cannot Create Shell Notification System Icon" I dont know what is it, I think that has something to do with the icons on the toolbar, in fact, when my computer starts with that message, quite icons in toolbar disappear. I tried to restore system and nothing happens, except that the all icons appear again, but when I restart the computer they disappear again. I have already pass all antivirus and all programs related to cleaning, everything.
