this is what is going on i never had a problem w/ my pc turned over night but now it turns off when i wake up in the morning it off, and i will lose everything im doing Transencoding a Video.

I have a Dell latitude D505 and reinstalled the OS on it, i loaded win2000 on it first and updated the heck out of it. every service pack ect. internet worked great. Now i upgraded it to winXPPRO and can not get the Ethernet controller or Network controller to work. cannot get on to the net wired or wireless. I did try installing the drivers before the chipset's but i think even after installing that it would work. nothing. tryed like 5 different drivers for this and nothing. i do not have any dell cds so im doing good so far the only thing in the device manager that is showing up in other devices with points over them is the Ethernet and Network controller.

It would much more convenient to use the existing cable which would have to be coupled in two places, however I have been told that although this can be done it is not recommended, and have also been informed that it would be ok to use couplings.I would like to know if they are ok to use and what type to use.
I have this wierd problem with my desktop icons.i have many icons on the desktop, organized in groups around the screen.for instance all the picture editing programs utilities are aligned in 2 rows of 5 coulmns. groupes are hoto editing, utilities, spyware/virus/firewall, yellow folders with important picture projects, and documents. problem is randomly i will work on the net, go to the desktop and all, or most get moved to the left side of the screen all bunched up. i then have to rearange all the icons till the next time. i want to have them locked, and that they;ll never move till i need it to. btw, i have the "align to grid" on.

The PC with the Pro edition has two logical drives. One is very small (3GB) and I only use it to back up my other drives. It also uses Windows XP Pro as the OS. This is my E: drive. From my C: drive, I can 'see' my other PC (my wife's computer) which I want to back up. However, from my E: drive, I cannot 'see' my other PC. Therefore, I can't map it to my backup software. I CAN ping my wife's computer soI know it can be seen that way. This is probably a quirk between the Home Edition and the Pro edition.

Yesterday, I tried to run an ethernet cable from my router to my computer. The computer crashed/froze almost instantly. I decided to re-start the computer and again it crashed/froze. The reason I wanted to do this is because I want to connect my linksys wireless card to a gaming console so I can play games with people all over the world. This required me to change some of the settings on my network card. This time I changed the settings before connecting the ethernet cable to my computer. When I connected the cable, my computer showed the wired cable icon "searching for ip address" then I got the "blue screen of death" saying that windows crashed due to some form of network/hardware problem. I restarted the computer and in a few minutes I got the blue screen again...

After doing all the Microsoft Updates, ALL the wireless driver installs from Gateway there is no 'Wireless Network Connection' icon. I have also checked Device Manager and there is no wireless adapter. Before this exercise she was running wireless fine. It does work 'hard wired' but no wireless icon.

I then shut my computer down to restart it, used it a few times (in 4-bit safe mode), then after I shutdown again, I cant log back in... it just freezes and the screen flashes, I cannot boot into my computer setup (default f2) or into safe mode (default f8), however I can run the XP cd and get into the recovery console, is there any way that I can change the boot sequence from the recovery console? The screen is dotted with a bunch of dots up and down the screen in columns, and is in 4-bit video mode.
I have a Dell xps gen 5 with xp home.
the error I get is:
"Error: Cant enter setup. Video Mode 103 not supported by this video card."
I have managed to put video footage onto my PC from a video cassette (by plugging my VCR into the TV aerial socket). The video footage is saved on my PC as .mpg files & when I open them, they play fine on Windows Media Player.When I import them on to Windows Movie Maker, they are recognised as video footage and I am able to put them into the collections as video. However, for some reason, when I drag them onto the timeline, they go onto the audio line & I can't get them to go on the video line, so when I play it, the sound plays but there is no picture. I have tried saving them as .AVI files but that makes no difference
I have window XP SP2 installed on my laptop. I also use InterVideo WinDVD Creator for video editing. Recently when I try to import video file into my application, my laptop, processing percentage goes up to 98%, and the application just freezes up. I also tried the Microsoft movie maker software and I get the same result. I was wondering if I need to reinstall the application or there is something that my laptop is missing. The application was functioning fine until 2 days ago, and since then I haven't installed any other application.

Use fine, then after its been on for awhile it goes black again. Weird. I have the newest drivers and all the windows updates loaded. It just keeps going out. I have tried several screens as well to rule out the monitor freaking out.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy kid just disabled the video adapter on his XP Pro machine (Compaq, PII, on-board video) and now the initial Win XP screen comes up then goes dark once it gets mostly through the boot-up. It won't do any different in safe mode and even installing an AGP video card didn't get me around this. Short of reloading XP, is there a fix for this? Also tried reloading default BIOS settings just in case, no change.

My gut re-action is that it is an external power issue as my printer was working. Strangely, my optical mouse is working fine. There is only one thing I can think of. View 6 Replies View RelatedI posted this in the hardware forum, but since I posted that thread other things have been happening that make me think it could be a virus.My mouse was working fine up until last night, when my computer started behaving strangely. I would move my mouse across my desk and it would work fine, before the cursor simply stopped moving. I was still moving my mouse, but the cursor wasn't moving at all. It does this in every direction, and it happens at random times. I thought it might just be a problem with the optical tracking, but something else is happening today too. Whenever the cursor stops moving the mouse sometimes jumps to another part of the screen, this also occurs randomly. Even if I'm moving the mouse right it could jump to the lower left hand corner of the screen. It also clicks itself randomly, both left and right clicks. This means it's not just a problem with the optical tracking. I'm a big FPS player, so this isn't exactly what I need, especially when my gun fires randomly and the mouse stops tracking in a firefight.

What they were I don't know.But apparently the 'Stand By' function in shut down no longer works, and I can no longer adjust the monitor refresh rate, which is stuck at its lowest setting.Is there anything that can be done to try to find out what files are missing, and to download them again?

First of all my second hard drive (D disappeared...it didn't show in My Computer. "Add New Hardware" didn't bring it back. Then, all of a sudden it was back. Secondly, something changed my screensaver, but I was able to restore it the usual way. I've used Registry First Aid to check on registry content, and, I've run a virus scan (NAV) and I've defragged the drive. Also, neither Counterspy nor Spybot could find anything wrong.

We downloaded the sp2 when it sometime last year and it came with lots of problems.I finally had to go to microsoft and get them to help me uninstall it. I have not reinstalled sp2 because I am affraid to. Have they changed it and what happens if I install it and then have to "fix" things. I am not too advanced in my computer skills and I don't think I would be able to "fix" it.

Is there a program or someone who can clean things up for me and speed it back up again? I have an 80gb hard drive, 256 MB of Ram, and a great Graphics card. (NVIDIA GeForce If i'm not mistaken.), but I really need to clean this up, because before it was really fast, now on loading up, and just anything it's so slow nowadays.
