View 6 RepliesWhen I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under
Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.Is there some way to use the old Dave file?
not sure how, but i've lost most of the power settings. And, they don't stay when i save them from the gui. So, can someone help with setting the correct config to get my settings back? I've done 'Repair' from boot and have tried Run> sfc /scannow. Neuther has correct the issue. I'd REALLY rather not do a clean install, but it is looking like the product is just so inherently unstable that i have no choice.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just setup a new pc with a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro. I have very little installed bar the few essentials.I'm not a huge fan of the XP theme so I have switched it to the classic theme. I also have a dual monitor setup and have my right hand side monitor as the primary, with my left as the secondary. Consequently, I change the position of this in the desktop settings area so I can just move the mouse left to get onto the second monitor. All was fine until I installed McAfee AV 2006 after which, whenever I reboot, my theme resorts to the Windows XP theme and my monitor settings are lost. I've tried removing McAfee to no avail and Google searches don't find anything.
View 1 Replies View Relatedtonight i was playing a game and for some unknown reason it unexpectedly quit, i was a bit annoyed so i switched off the computer without shutting it down properly. but when i switched it back on a few hours later it started up normally, but then when i logged onto my username (out of 4) it started up to the default settings for a user, for example background changed to acer one, start menu favourites lost and internet explorer settings lost (eg. favourites, icons). And to make things worse, i found out later that when i went into my documents from the start menu, all of my files were not there. but after further exploration, all my files were still there but were in my folder in the documents and settings folder. but it must have started up my username from a TEMP folder in the Documents and Setting folder. Also when i log into any of the other 3 user names, all the settings are how they are supposed to be and nothing is different. please help!!! sorry if this was too longer message but i couldn't condense it any more!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI found images in Windows Picture and Fax viewer that I want to delete. I can delete them one-by-one, but that takes time. I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm having a major problem with XP Home Edition. When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.

This all started because I am trying to back up my computer to an external hard drive and keep getting error message "windows delay write failed". I tried updating the hard disk driver but there wasn't any update. While searching for fixes for that problem, I came across Panda Software online virus checker. I used it and it deleted a few viruses. They were all old, some may have only been unopened email attachments and they were all from 2001 and 2002. Two days later, I was using logmein - remote access and while rebooting (not the first reboot) I got the blue screen. Here's the error message.
Driver_IRQL_not _less_or_equal

VSDATANT.SYS - address F398B203 base at F3966000, Datestamp 4313a6c6
So I looked up vsdatant.sys which is located in system32 directory, and I changed the name of the driver to vsdatant.old but then my zonealarm stopped working so I changed it back.
How do I get my display working properly? Any ideas on the "write failed" error message?
I have burned some photos onto a CD -R and have gone back into the cd drive but they are missing!! where have they gone. The photos were definitely burned on. I thought that once on a cd nothing could be lost.

My ISP is ATT/Yahoo DSL and I have a wireless home network. My desktop connects directly to the router and the laptop connects via wireless. My printer which is connected to the desktop is also accessed by the laptop.
Will upgrading to sp2 affect any of my network or ISP settings? Not knowing how my network will be affected is what is keeping me from upgrading both the desktop and laptop.

It may be since I installed 'iplayer' from BBC website which uses the Kontiki p2p network. This uses a utility called k services and k host which runs in the startup. I disabled them as they connect to the network even when the program is shut down. How do I stop ms config reverting back to normal please?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOur wireless infrastructure is always changing and evolving so I was thinking on creating some kind of GPO that can be pushed to laptops and configure wireless settings that way. Is there a registry key that can be exported (from already configured laptop) that will contain all wireless settings? We have 2 different profiles we use through Windows Zero on XP SP2. This registry should have everything in there (ssid, keys, encryption, RADIUS and other possible settings for wireless)Please help. It is a great pain to type in keys and mess around with wireless settings most of my day.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently upgraded my laptop to 2 gigs of ram. And it is working fine. What I was wondering is if there is a setting somewhere, to force windows to use as much of my ram as possible, before ever using the swap file? The reason I say this, is even though I now have so much Ram, windows is STILL swapping stuff out to my swap file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer has gotten to where it no longer will save folder settings. I don't know why this would happen? It no longer opens my folders full screen and all of the folders are the same style. I go to my pictures folder and set it to view thumbnails. As soon as I back out and go back in, they are back to tiles. Every folder is in tiles no matter what I try to set it to. It got this way because I set it to save every folder as that option because, before, it would randomly change the view setting to any folder. One day, my pictures would be thumbnails, the next a filmstrip, the next tiles, and so forth without an increase or decrease in the amount of pictures there. I even change the "type" of folder to something different: Music, lots of pictures, few pictures, documents, etc. Still the same settings.NOW it is getting to where it won't even save the order I put my quick launch icons in. I had them in the same order for over a year and now they won't stay that way. Nothing has changed?Oh, and it's also giving me a blue screen of death when I try to open pictures with Windows Media Player.Virus software and adware software don't find anything suspicious.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to run a registry cleaning programme a couple of nights ago without setting a system restore point, which may be one of the dumber decisions that I've made as of late.Right now, Windows XP is not saving my settings and acting rather peculiar. In particular:
-When I boot up, it does not remember to display the Quick Launch bar. I have to put it on manually every time.
-My folder toolbar settings are never saved - when I click on My Computer, I want the "Address Bar" toolbar to always show. As soon as I click off My Computer, the setting is forgotten and the address bar is gone.
-When I boot up, my desktop icons are arranged by name and not in the custom arrangement that I created for them.
-Most frustratingly, once I arrange my desktop icons back into the order I want and align them by grid, they instantly revert back to the old "by name" settings as soon as I make any kind of application change. (I'm not sure I described this well, so I'll give an example. Go into My Computer, click on Tools, Folder Options, View. If I check any box or make any change and hit "apply," all of the icons revert back to the by name order and my 'align by grid' setting is completely forgotten).I have tried restoring my system to a variety of points within the last week, but I have had no success; whenever I try, Windows XP gives me an error message upon booting up.I am quite certain that this problem is somehow linked to the registry alterations I made a couple of days ago, but have no way of knowing for certain. It appears that my Windows XP is locked into a particular brand of settings that I do not want. But I could be quite incorrect about this.I hope have described this well enough that someone can come along and help.
I was wondering what my page file settings should be. At present I have it on C:, which is the windows drive, set at 2000-2200. I can't quiet remember what the default settings were, but they seemed fairly low to me, and so I changed them. Also, if the rule of thumb is 1.5 of ram, does that include or exclude the video card?

View 10 Replies View RelatedRecently I reinstalled XP Home Edition and XP Pro using a slipstreamed installation disk contain SP2 and the latest hotfixes. Following those installations I found that I could not easily access any Drive Image (pqi) files that were created under the newly installed operating systems. The images could be restored but only after booting from the Drive Image rescue floppies. I also was not able to open and explore any of those images using Drive Image ImageExplorer. Images created prior to these installation could be opened and restored within windows with Drive Image. To access the images created under the new OS installation I had start the Home Edition in the safe mode and the go the image file, right click and select security. Then I had to add my user name under services and then check full control. In the XP Pro system I had to disable simple file protection and then change the security settings in a similar manner. This all had to be done even though the user has full administrator rights. I've been using Drive Image 2002 for the last 2 years for backups on both Home Edition and Pro versions of XP so this behavior is something I believe is new an possible a result of security updates included in the new installations. I really need access to these images from within windows but I also need to retain simple files sharing on my XP Pro machine.
