View 14 RepliesI just spent a number of hours getting rid of Trojan.desktophijack.B and Trojan.popuper, and now i cant get my windows xp theme off of "windows classic." i can select the theme but when i go to "windows and buttons" all that is available is "windows classic style." how do i fix this? i find it ironic that i can manually clean a registry but changing themes is beyond me.

This tweak (group policy setting) forces the display of the Windows 2000 style Start menu and the display of the standard desktop icons.START > RUN > type GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > START MENU AND TASKBAR > find FORCE CLASSIC START MENU > check ENABLED > OK > REBOOT
If you check DISABLED only the XP style Start menu can be displayed. If you check NOT CONFIGURED the user can change the view.
I have Windows XP, I was booting up my computer in diagnostic mode, and when I went to boot back in normal mode, everything went haywire. My compuer 'appearance' is stuck in 'Classic Windows' and my Sound Blaster Live isn't working (I have no sound now). This is just what i've noticed, so far. I've tried many times to boot back into normal mode, using various methods, and while everything seems to be working as they normally do (with the exception of sound), the 'Classic Windows' appearance remains the same. I've also reinstalled my SB Live several times, yet it still won't come on when I boot my computer, it just offers a diagnostic test which I fail, It asks me to reinstall, yet it does the same thing

View 12 Replies View RelatedI installed a wireless internet thingy on my computer to obtain internet when living with roommates. Ever since then, everytime I start up, I end up having to restart over and over again, until the log in screen that pops up has the curved edges. I have recently removed the hardware (wireless card/thingy) and now I am unable to get the computer to start up with the "curved edges" even after restarting OVER AND OVER AND OVER. I am up to my neck in anger.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am stuck in the Windows Classic mode. I clicked Run; services.msc and discovered that Themes was 'Stopped'. If I click Start, this sorts the problem, allowing me to go back to my Royale theme I have on Windows XP. However, on restarting the PC, the problem occurs again, and I have to repeat the procedure to sort it. Startup Type is set to 'Automatic'.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have set up an XP-Pro classic-file-sharing network and want the client computers to share folders on the "server" computer . I have arranged a number groups and placed users into the groups. Each user is a member of GROUP_nnn and also of USER(group). I have shared c:SHARED_ROOT to allow all groups to have full-control on SHARED_ROOT, but for some reason access is denied to the sub-folders SUBF_A , SUBF_B and SUBF_C. As ADMIN, I have set the permissions to allow each user full-control in these sub-folders but I still get "access is denied" when a user tries to navigate into one of the sub folders. I removed INHERIT from the SHARED_ROOT and from each of the sub-folders.
Do I have to "share" the subfolders? Should I allow INHERIT on the subfolders?
Is there a way to remove and/or edit the words: Windows XP Home Edition from the left side of the Classic Start menu? I did it with Windows 98. If I remember correctly, I had to create a new BMP file of certain dimensions, and use Adobe Photoshop to create a layer of vertical text, give the new file the same name as the old one, change the extension for the old file, and put the new one in the same location. Is the method for the Classic Start menu in Windows XP the same.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI run all of my anti-spyware/malware programs, disc defrag, chkdsk every week. I then create a restore point.Today, for the first time ever, I needed to restore my computer to a previous date because my XP view changed to Classic view and the option to change it back to XP view wasn't available. But the restore points that I saved were not available. I was given a choice of July 1,2,3,4 and 5. The last time I created a restore point was last Monday, June 27th,but when I clicked on the << arrow to go back to the month of June, it wouldn't go back. What happened to the restore points that I created and why couldn't I access them?I know that they were saved because I received a message that they were created. And I have no idea why my XP view changed to Classic View when I turned my computer on yesterday.
View 31 Replies View RelatedI'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems)
1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine'
2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen.
3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall.
I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
