What could make System Restore in Windows XP not work? A virus maybe? Or what?
I tried like heck to roll back something in System Restore the other day and nothing would work. I just kept going back and trying further points but each one failed to restore my computer.
So what are the possible causes for System Restore to fail? I tried to restore and it says "Your system cannot be restored to this time point."
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am running win xp, and have encountered a wierd fault with system restore. previously when I have used restore Ihave had no problems. but suddenly the date changed to 2001, and when I looked at restore in order to create a restore point it will not move from 2001.I have plenty of disc space and s/restore is set high enough to advance to 2008.

I start System Restore Wizard (because I've never done this before and it seemed like an easy way to go about it), but the earliest restore point is June 23rd (or threabouts).My question: Is there any way to go back before that?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a PC clone, Win XP SP3. It is using a wired connection to a router. Yesterday, out of no where, I lost connection to the internet. No browsers, Trillian, nothing that uses the internet works. I tried running a virus scan, malware scan and found nothing. I tried doing a system restore and it seemed to work, for a brief moment I had the internet again. Then, once more, it stopped working.
Right now, the current speculation is that the onboard network connection is dying. What I'm trying to find out, is if that is possible or not. I'm not worried about having to buy a card - they're cheap. I am worried about buying a new card and it not fixing the problem.Are there other things that can cause this to happen that I can/should look into first?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHere is my problem:When I started my computer a couple of days ago the screen stayed black and had the mouse pointer on it. I waited a few minutes but nothing happened. I rebooted and the same thing happened. I hit restart and pressed the Esc key ant the system started to post and stopped. This message came up Warning: System boot fail. Your system boot fail or post interrupted. Please enter setup to load default settings and reboot again.I pressed F1 and setup looked to be in order so I exited and rebooted. When that message came up I hit F2 and the system booted up ok. I tried restoring to a few different dates but that didnt solve the problem. I also made sure that I have the latest video card drivers and monitor drivers. The system wont start in safe mode either.
View 12 Replies View RelatedMy OS is Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 (Service Pack 1), now recently I had to turn off System Restore to get rid of a pesky trojan horse virus (I did successfully). The problem now is I can't turn it back "on". I've gone to the troubleshooting pages and used every method and I get the same error messages
"Could not start System Restore Service on Local Computer"
"Error 5: Access is Denied"
"System Restore cannot protect your computer right now, restart and try again"
I have a computer with windows xp which continuously failed to boot fully the first go.I would have to soft boot, it would freeze on the windows loading screen and after another one or two soft boots it would finally load by selecting load windows normally.Then all works fine until the next time I turn on.I have since reformatted this machine using different windows xp and are still having the same above problems loading the first time.

It's blank except for one folder - WINXP. It's easy to remove each time, but how can I get this page or whatever it is, to take a hike and get lost, so that just the desktop icons are visible? Would appreciate any help. Using xp home, P4, 1 gig RAM.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy desktop has decieded to add the 'menu' bar down trhe left had side of the screen. It is the same as the type which appears on the left hand side of open folders in XP. I created a new user account and it was OK until the screen went into screen saver and I needed to log back in and the problem was there again. This appears to have only started to happen when I added my XP laptop to the wired network.

It says that i need to enter a password but I actually don't have to, and instead of having my user side and one for my editing where you have a picture up and you can switch between the two it will only let me go to the side that i use for internet and such. My computer was working like clockwork until I installed and then uninstalled a program( google earth). Now my computer takes at least 10 minutes, maybe longer to boot up to the point where I can actually use it. I have winxp home. I have tried disk cleanup, running norton, running spybot and adaware programs. I even tried to do a system restore but it keeps telling me no matter which date I choose that it cannot restore back to that date.

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?
