A Dell Inspiron 8600. A couple of days ago, I formatted the hard drive and installed WinXP SP2. It then ran very slow. I then checked System Properties and it said I was only using 251 MHz of 1400 MHz. I then installed the software called Speed Switch XP, and it got it boosted up to 599 MHz when it's on max performance. I'm now stuck there.

So what should i do to backup them all and format my computer ? I used to format and install OS but not backing up anything. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh install of Win XP on my C: drive and whenever I boot the PC I get options on which windows install to boot into. I had a Win 2000 install on my D: drive at one time but that drive has since been reformatted, so I'm at a loss as to why I have to choose an install at every boot.
I tried to rebuild the boot.ini file using the XP Setup Recovery console but that only added a 3rd option to the list of installs to choose from at boot-up.
My question is, can I edit the startup options manually and delete the 2nd and 3rd lines, or is there another way to clean this up so my rig boots to the C: drive automatically every time?
I just formated one of my servers to discover that local disk is not E: instead of C: , i tried to change it back, but it will not let me since it is the boot device?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 computers that i need to know what is the max hard drive size. One computer is running winME and the other is running Win2000. As for the win2000 i changed the registry for 48 bit LBA support in order to see my 320gb drive. The reason why I ask is because I'm planning to purchase a 750gb or 1tb external hard drive to backup my system. I don't want to purchase it to find that the system can only see 500gb or something like that. I'm gonna post this same post in the winMe area.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am running an 2.2gh Athlon 64 with Media Center 2005 and a gig of Ram and an integrated 200x Raedon mobo. The system idle process is at 99-80 percent most of the time. However, at the bottom it says I'm running around 75-100% and when I go to the graph it shows really high as well. I just reformatted my enitre drive via recovery disc to try to fix this. (Also and i didnt want to try to uninstall the beta 2 of vista so it wasnt for the sole purpose of fixing the percent thing) I dont have a duel boot anymore and it has ran this way since the start AND since the reformat. Too bad i didnt notice this when i bought it.

The Hard Drive from the defective PC obviously has all my valuable programs on it, some of which antiques that I love using for work. Both computers have identical Operating systems (XP-Pro)

Will I be able to run programs directly from the old (now second) Hard Drive? If not, what is the safest way to merge the individual program's registry entries with the registry on the drive which actually operates the machine

I have no viruses and I have defraged a million times. I just can't seem to find out what the problem is. I have freed up a tona space on my rig, too. i have used tons of tricks to speed the computer back up, like using msconfig and disabling certain services.This is what worrys me though, I never used 2 get these: So like wtf is going down.

I turned it back on and it gets to the HP Blue Screen. About 3 seconds after startup.Does nothing else.
When I turn the comptuer on i see the 3 lights on the Keyboard but then goes away.And any option at this screen like the F2 F10 or the ESC do not work.Sounds like the Harddrive is running fine.But just sits on that screen.Reboot and same thing.I did reseat the SATA and power cables on the Drive just to make sure.
I was running windows on an IDE hard drive and bought a new SATA and installed a fresh copy of windows on it, now having a dual boot with the old installation on the IDE. I've been running on the SATA drive for a few months now and I want to remove the IDE drive from my system but when I disconnect it and reboot I get a message that tells me NTLDR is missing so I am assuming that the boot record is on the IDE drive. How can I make the SATA drive my main boot drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedA few days ago , i noticed that wheni went into my second hard drive to a pictures folder . it took a long time for the folder to open i have 37.2 GB free space on the drive and there hasnt been and changes on the drive at all , its just for storage . pictures , music , films etc. i havent done anything to my machine , loadsed up new programs or anything on that drive its just incredibly slow,and just the pictures folder .. every other folder works as usuall , fast ( snappy )

View 10 Replies View Relatedi have a dell dimension e310. 2.9 ghz. 4 gigs of ram. windows xp... umm so just recently we took it into the shop and they re-installed the operating system. because we thought it was infected with virus' or w/e.ever since, its been running slow. it boots up ok...and for the first few minutes its running...not fast. but not too slow. and then it kinda just freezes. i can move the mouse but if im running windows explorer(havent been able to re-install firefox) it kinda just sticks there. i installed norton 360 and it says the pc i running fine. i dont know what to do about it. i have to wait an hour just so windows explorer can close..very frustrating...

Then, when it actually starts installing whatever game I try, Winamp plays at half speed, pops and hiccups, and becomes unlistenable. Firefox takes between 10 and 30 seconds to load an instance, and typing is slow, and shows up on screen in bursts. Furthermore, even my System sounds (right clicking, for example) become slow and broken.

When I turn it on and log into my profile, it takes about 5 mins for it to load the desktop and about another 5 mins to load the antivirus software (Norton Security Suite 2010). The same goes for everything I do on this computer, it takes a while for the internet browser (IE 8 and FireFox), opening any program on this computer takes a while to load up. I have run Norton and it doesn't come up with anything. I have done a system restore a couple of times but it doesn't seem to help any
