My club has a computer with the X-P operating system. As a security precaution I assigned a system and set-up password when we installed the computer. Some users are now complaining that they are having trouble logging into the system and want to eliminate it. The set-up program shows both passwords as being "enabled". When I hit the space bar it asks for the password and then asks to confirm it but nothing more. How can I completely eliminate both passwords?

Does anyone know to put a password on XP? The one where when your system gets started up you have to put in a password in order for the desktop to come up.

I recently installed IE7 along with a batch of windows automatic updates, didn't like IE7 so am back on IE6. The problem is that now, when I try to access a website where, in the past, a small pop-up window would have appeared asking me for my username and password (yes THAT type of website ) the small window no longer appears and I get the 401 error returned from the website server. On websites where the apssword request is an integral part of the web-page there's no problem, only where in the past the small username / password would have appeared. Any ideas, I have allowed pop-ups, disabled firewalls and everything else but it just doesn't let me in. Also affects MSN music so I can't use my remaining credit either. Running XP with SP2 and all windows updates applied to date

i bought a used laptop w/XP installed and registered. but can't get into system because doesn't have the Admin password Don't want to reinstall everything because we don't have the XP disk. That, too, is gone.
The laptop is useable, but runs like a 400MHz. Slow for 2.4GHz. Takes several minutes to boot up and every window lags. Can do minor stuff such as defrag and shutting off several XP "bells and whistles", but it really needs a serious tune-up. Several of the start-up programs need to be shut off or removed. Also needs its reg cleaned. Also need to check the BIOS. Can't do it cuz it won't let me in.
Is there any way to nullify the passwords? I know on certain pc's, all I have to do is remove and reinstall a pin on the motherboard. This is an HP 2.4GHZ Celeron laptop.

I just got an old laptop from a friend of mine running XP Professional. There are currently two passwords required to be able to use the computer: one is right after starting up the computer, before anything's really booted up yet. The other appears after the system screen -- I have to press ctrl+alt+delete, then put in a user name and password. Is there any way to get rid of the first (admin? Is that the term?) password without getting rid of the second one?

I'm not an IT person, I apologize for not having enough information to explain myself in IT terms. I turn the machine on. I can't remember the password I last used with this machine so I can't login. It's a work computer which I want to give back but I want to erase all my personal files first.

I had probs, so I did a system restore. When rebooting after that, it asked me for passwords to get in, both my account and Guest. Niether of them should have actually had passwords on them, therefore I can't get into the pc now. Tried everything, including using Administrator and password blank, still doesn't work. So on some peoples advice, I decided to do a Xp reinstall, choosing upgrade instead of formatting (so I don't lose everything). When going through that process, it gets to the point where I choose R for repair. It then askes which version to install on, so I say option 1 - Windows. THAT is when more probs come in. It now asks for the Administrator password. I've never given one in the past, and if I have then it's one of two options - either my surname or the word 'computer', so after trying both of those, and also trying a blank password, it then restarts the computer because I've given 3 incorrect passwords. The point is that there IS NO password!! I can't understand why it's asking for one??!! This is really getting me down.

When I step away from the computer, the screensaver appears. When I return to resume working on it, the logon screen appears and I need to choose "myself" to re-enter the password. I can't remember how to set it to just continue working on the application after I "wiggle" the mouse.

My friend gave me a Dell Latitude Laptop, Windows XP O/S to look at. It is a couple years old and was given to him by his old company which went out of business. He has not used it until recently and was unable to get into it due to a network password screen. I accessed it with ''admin'' as a username and no password. I cannot change the "users" information or disable the password because I have no "administrator" rights and don't kow the password for the administrator. I tried the default blank password trick. Once in, I noticed network software installed and I cannot access the internet with my ethernet cable. Basically, I am just trying to get it where he can use it around the house. Is there a way to disable the company installed networks, or make them go away completely? I have no XP O/S on disk, so I am trying to avoid a complete format. If I can just get the machine back to the basic XP O/S it would be good to go.

The hand cursor never becomes a cursor for me to type in passowords to user accounts. I went into safe mode and then into control panel and deleted the passwords for each user acct and now I can get into the accounts but how can I add the passwords again and be able to type them in. We have 3 user accounts on this pc and would like to have them password protected.

I was doing a clean up with Ccleaner etc and in my haste I did not take note of what I was clicking. Spybot Search and Destroy flashed up and I clicked to allow, or not allow as the case may be, to do something to, from what I can remember, 'WLON' or something similarly named. In any case, what happens now is that I fire up the computer, enter my password, the desktop briefly flashes up for a split second(no icons) and then it immediately logs off and goes to password entry again.

My account on my computer (Win XP Pro SP2) is an Administrator account. Over a year ago, I got tired of entering my password because I an the only person that uses this computer. I did something so it would boot without the password screen appearing ( I don't remember what, but I think I left the password line blank).
Since the computer boots directly to my account, I am never prompted to enter a password; but if I use Power Options (and the computer sleeps), it wakes to the login screen and I cannot reenter my account. I have to reboot. On the login screen, I have tried leaving the password blank and entering every password I use, but I get an Invalid Password response.

older software that worked before sp2 was installed.. anyway, now big problem. suddenly xp asks for password to logon, and this is really strange, i have never in my life had a password for my computer. so obviously no matter what i enter, the computer asks politely if i've forgotten the password

A few days ago I tried to update my families pc to SP2 so I could get all the updates etc. It seemed to install alright, but then when starting up it gave me some drwatson.exe error which ended up freezing the pc. So I did what I thought was safest at the time and that was to go back to a restore point and then maybe try reinstall SP2. BUT, after restoring, windows suddenly showed the password/log on screens. I now can't log on as Administrator OR Guest. Nothing works. I've tried EVERY possible password that I could have used in the passed, but nothing works. So now I can't get into the pc at all. I've tried booting up in safe mode and logging in as administrator with a blank password, but that doesn't even work. I've read a lot about it online, and it seems the only solution would be to reinstall XP. But would that work as a format and erase some of my files and/or settings? Or would it just be like an upgrade?

For a long time, I log on to my Windows XP by clicking on 'Default' without any problem. However, today, the computer did not startup smoothly until after running 'system checkup' automatically. Then, when the logon page came, I click 'Default' but it asked for password. I did try some words or left it blank but XP would not let me logon.
