View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I got my old ( sitting in closet 18 mos ) e-machines out of my closet, set it up and turned it on. Worked fine. I wanted to install Linux to learn something new. I ran defrag and then went to do error checking on the disk ( C drive ) Halfway thru everything died. I got a message ' No operating system. I have the restore CD's ( 2 ) that came with the machine and tried to get them to boot the machine with no luck I never made an emergency boot disk. (I made the CD drive the boot drive ) I have a Ubuntu live CD but that would not boot either ( If I end up with only Linux w?o windows that's fine. )

View 14 Replies View RelatedThis error comes up no matter how I try to boot my Computer.Disable or uninstall any anti viruse, disk defragmanation or backup utilities... Then it goes on like that, and the technical information: STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE 0xF7CDE6DC 0xF7CDE3D8 0xF731BF81) It started happening after I ran the new AVG Free 8.0 virus scanner. So maybe that's the problem? So far I haven't been able to even run in safe mode to disable it.

After booting from the CD Windows setup happily inspects the hardware etc etc but upon the Message 'Windows is starting up' I am confronted by a BSOD and Error message 0x0000007b. Windows Vista currently runs fine and reports no problems with any hardware. I tried booting up a Linux distro and it did this quite hapily. Any workarounds for this situation? Is there a BIOS option i should be looking at changing or is my hardware too new for Win XP

My friend goes to college and is home for the holidays and asked me if I could find out what is wrong with his laptop.First you turn it on and there is a constant clciking noise but that I don't think is the main problem. when you turn it on it doesnt boot it goes right to a black screen with whitle letters and says this Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key Could I person put in an xp pro system disk and boot with that? He isn't home right now and I don't know if it is xp home or pro but I have a pro disk, it has not got a floppy drive so can't use floppies to boot with, So can I set the BIOS to boot from the cd-rom and try the xp pro disk? and if so what do I do after it boots? or can I click on I think it is F10 when starting and see if I can get to system recovery? and if so what do I do after I get there?

We followed all of the steps for installation - so far so good - until we got to the point of installing the powerdirector (another bit of software included). That wouldn't install. It instead gave the message: "This software can only be installed on a designated system".Since we think all of the requirements are met, we don't know what else is wrong nor what it means by "designated system".
