I been running this computer every little thing I load or do takes 3-5 mintues to load, Whether it's winamp or Yahoo Instant Messenger It takes a really long time to load any app of any sort. There has been no changes made to my machine and I scanned for viruses on this machine and nothing is found. Could I get some help in why this is computer is a lag-a-holic? It's been a good machine until it's started to lag.
I am running Windows XP on a HP Pavilion ze2000.I think I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger. Actually, I think I have several problems: 1. Messenger tries to load in my tray when I start the computer. It never did this before. It also does the same when I connect to my broadband via dialler. At the moment I am denying access through Zone Alarm. Is this normal? 2. In All Programmes I have a Windows Messenger Icon and a Windows Live Messenger Icon. Again, is this normal? There is only an option to remove Live Messenger in Add or Remove Programmes. 3. There is a "1 contact pending" message above the contact list in my Live Messenger, which leads to a "page not available" message when I click on it. 3. When I close Live Messenger, I get multiple "RPC Server Not Available" warnings which I keep closing but keep reappearing. They appear too fast for me to close them, so I have to restart my machine.
I'm trying to find a way to make my computer start up without going to the welcome/classic login screen. It used to start up w/o the welcome screen, but I put a password on my account. After I removed the password the screen still comes up even though I only have one user account w/o a password.
I've noticed on my computer that several windows services seems to be stopping. First I noticed the "Themes", then Windows Audio, then Firewall, and I think it was called DNS Internet service.Anyways, I keep restarting them after they crash, however, I can't usually restart the firewall. I may fixed that one, which is critical. But whatever bug it is I'm experiencing, it's still influencing my computer. Does this sound like a known virus.
Everytime i download someone that isnt minute the download stops completely at a random point, sometimes 45%, 67%, 89% etc.It was working fine a week ago but since then i've tried everyday and it's been the same.I'm connected using a wireless aerial to a belkin router. but as i said everything was fine until a week ago.
I recently worked on a computer that has not been updated since probably 1998. When I went to IE, it immediately went to WINDOWS UPDATES. Since they have dial-up only, it was 3 hours and only at 21%, I decided to just shut it down.So now.............how do I stop the updates altogether? They rarely are on the net, they use it for work only, and since their computer runs fine, I can't see allocating that much down-time from their workday to upload the updates.
I wrote befroe but did not get an answer. Please help me to understand. I have windows xp with verizon/msn. my son has to 2 emails and I have 1. I have symantec virus protection and it is working properly. The problem I do not understand is everytime my son signs on to either email address the box from symantec comes up saying 32sasser has been successfully blocked. When I look at my log from symantec it shows it is blocking it constantly.I ran the sasser tool and shows no virus and did sybot and adaware, it showed 265 critical and i removed them. I understand this is being blocked but isn't there a way to stop them or it from trying to do this ?He gets emails showing from postman and RE-- emails and when we look there is nothing on the page.
my son has been shutting down the computer recently from his account while i have been logged on. I have been downloading programs and such that i want to finish as quickly as possible, thus the comp needs to stay on. Is there a way to lock the computer from shutting down or something?
I need to download Macrommedia flash. However something is stopping the download. The security bar does not even appear to ask confirmation in fact nothing happens it just will not download. I have tried disabling spywareblaster and spybot in case there is a conflict there. I have disable the pop up blocker can anyone advise. I am running XP with SP2 and windows firewall. I have attached an image of the download section which has a red x in a box which I assume is disabling an image or something.
I have a phone directory from our local phone company installed on my LAN at home. When I try to access the directory from the client pc's, I keep the message: "IE has restricted....from showing active content". How can this be changed so each client can access the directory without this warning coming up?
I've got windows XP and want to stop some things running when I boot windows. I've tried running MSCONFIG and un-ticking programs in the startup tab. Next time I boot the same programs still load. When I looked in MSCONFIG again the programs were un-ticked, but if I scroll down they have all appeared again ticked. Can anyone help me cause I've got some pretty pointless things starting that slow my PC down?
About an hour ago, I put the Windows XP Home Edition disc for a DELL computer into my CD-RW drive, to install windows xp on to my computer, as it reached 22-23%, the installer just stopped. So I restarted it multiple times and it stops at 22 or 23% each time.

I need to stop a service from a user account. I do not want to switch to an admin account. I know my admin account name and password. What command can I issue to stop a service from a user account?
I read an article on slashdot.org which states that if windows users do not install the windows genuine advantage update that windows will stop working. Apparently this is supposed to be happening this fall. I have installed the Windows Genuine Advantage update because well I had no choice but I haven't installed the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification update (KB905474).These are separate updates. If I do not install the notification update will this mean that windows will stop working or do I just need to install the Windows Genuine Advantage update for windows to continue to keep working?
I'm using XP Pro SP2, and am trying to run a trace log to see which processes are starting/stopping and when. However, I get the following when I try to start the log:an't start trace log from Windows Kernel Trace provider event process creations/deletions). Error "The LOG_NAME log or alert has not started. Refresh the log or alert list to view current status, or see the application event log for any errors. Some logs and alerts might require a few minutes to start, especially if they include many counters."
We are running into a problem where multiple services on a Windows XP SP2 system fail to run. This is happening on different brands of systems at different customer locations, and so far has eluded our ability to detect a pattern. The symptom is a user complaining that an application fails to start or to work correctly. When we examine the system, a number of services have stopped or failed to start, with no reason given. We haven't systematically documented what services failed to start (the list changes when the screen is refreshed), but the list published at seems to be typical. The workaround I have used is to go through the services that are not running, set each of them to automatically restart on first and second failure (a tedious task), then restart the system. This has usually fixed the problem for that user, but doesn't explain what is causing the failure to begin with.
Tired of being constantly nagged by reboot requests after installing XP updates I went to the wsindows update folder in Group Policy and enabled the "No automatic restart for scheduled updates" option, clicked apply and forgot about it. Untill my computer installed the automatic update for .Netframework, when, without any warning it went into reboot mode causing me to completely lose the data I was working on. The only other option in the update folder is to delay the restart but as this only allows you to stretch it to a max of 30 minutes it's not much help.
I'd seen some discussions in this group about removing icons from the systray but that requires stopping the program from being executed by Startup using the 'msconfig' command. Is there a method/program of removing the icon from systray but leave the associated program running? Unfortunately, the program I'm running doesn't have an option to remove it from systray.
I just built myself a brand new PC last week. Two times now, I've woken up and had this message on the screen from AVG Free Edition: "Something bad has happened to the application...". I click ok, and go about my business, but nothing works. I open My Computer, and it comes up, but sits there with its little search light forever. It seems as though my hard drive has stopped, but things left in memory continue to work. Some things open (like things I used the day before), some dont. The things that open don't really work, they just open and sit there. I hit the reset button on the case and everything works when the PC boots back up. This is Windows XP Pro. I DO have the option of Stopping both of my hard drives, the same as you'd stop a USB flash drive, etc. I've never run SATA before, so I assume it has to do with that? I do not have it set to stop my hard drives in the power options.
When I bring up the computer I have several boot menu's that appear, how do stop them. I have compaq, acer, window XP and the welcome screen. How do I get the start menu to come up only.
my computer is sooo slow - i have a p3 which takes ages to work. i keep pressing ctrl alt del to stop some of the processes which arent necessary but i thought i should ask here the importance of each task so that i keep the imp ones and get rid of the unimp ones. so can anyone advise which one needs to keep and ones i can do without? id like to get rid of whatever i dont need.
I undo one Program from start up and after that a pop up message appears as follows : " You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the Windows. The System Configuration Utility is currently running in Diagnostic or Selective Start Up Mode causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the Normal Start up mode in the General Tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility."
I have a Windows XP Home Edition every time i start the pc it says: Error loading :WindowsSystem32cafcleac.dll which I promptly just ignore. My hard drive is only 5 gigabytes big so it gets full quite fast. I used to be okay with it but now I can't watch any streaming stuff without a low memory bubble message and it stopping all streaming stuff. I fluctuate between 170 to 0 mb of memory space. I tried to run the thing to clean up more space but it just stays stuck on two green bars indefinitely and errors out. I tried to uninstall some software on add/remove programs but there are no "uninstall" buttons on most of my stuff. The best I can do is erase cookies which is annoying at best since it only opens up about 5 mb.
I am running XPPRO with all latest updates and recently when I minimized any programs, it stopped showing the program on the taskbar. Now I do not know which programs are running or have to use the CTRL-TAB to switch between programs. I tried to look for setting which would re-enable this but could not find this.
I have XP Pro 2002 SP3 Pent4 2.66GHz 1.00GB of RAM Recently I cannot view a video or listen to music without it stopping the music to rebuffer & videos stop.System idle is at 65-70 & iexplore is at 25-30.I do not see anything else running.I do not play games.I did recently download the lastest version of itunes & have read that a number of people are having a buffering problem when listening to radio stations. And I am not able to watch a movie at hulu without it needing to stop I was able to last week.
Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.
