As you all probably know, you can create a shortcut that will automatically shut down your PC, by creating a desktop shortcut of C:WindowsSystem32Shutdown.exe. There is a catch: if you accidentally press it, there is no convenient way to stop the shutdown sequence. (you can create a CANCEL SHUTDOWN shortcut, and have the shudown shortcut have a delay (-t 10, for example), but that is cumbersome, and will take up even more desktop real estate.)So i had this idea for a solution. I tried creating a keyboard shortcut for the shutdown shortcut (and was going to do the same for the Cancel Shutdown Shortcut). And, it worked fine. The point was that I could get rid of the little shutdown shortcut icon from my desktop. So, I moved it to a file in My Documents, so it would still be available, just not sitting on the desktop. (Note: I even repeated the above process, starting in another folder, instead of starting at the desktop and the following problems still occurred)
I made a desktop shortcut that I am using to shutdown the computer at the end of the day. Is it safe to use "shutdown" this way or is it better to go through the 2 extra steps: Start, Turn Off Computer, and Shutdown? It seems to work fine shutting down from the shortcut, I just don't want to damage the computer. For the shortcut I used this command: shutdown -s -t 0 -c "hi"
i remote into my XP box everything is fine except when i shut down using a shutdown shortcut and other shutdown utilities no matter what after i get booted off the remote session the computer looks like its shutting down then stays on for a few seconds then a BSOD appear. I have been trying to figure out why for the past week and no solution so im hoping someone can chime in..The problem is only on remote if i shut down locally never a single BSOD and no hardware has changed. No driver issues. ive read and tried all the usual solutions. Need someone here to chime in on specifics.Ive also tried to remote in with bare minimum and no go. same thing.
This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.
When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.
It seems most people want to do away with shortcut arrows. I WANT them but can't get them. I have tried Tweak UI. I check the appropriate box but they will not show up. How can I get them to appear?
Had a tech in today testing my ADSL, I just got back and fired her up to find the Icon on the desktop is missing?Any simple way to restore this, I don't want to do a system restore as I have no way of knowing what the Tech may have changed or added that will be lost.

Everytime I open a folder of any kind and click on something this shortcut appears. If I click on this shortcut it says "Windows Script Host" There is no script file specified. What is it and how can I stop it please? Its very annoying. The shortcut is a big "S" and on the bottom it has this written: .VBS;VBE;JS;JSE
Is it possible to create a shortcut to the System Restore wizard where you can create a new restore point? I have a friend that is new to the computing world and he is driving me crazy with questions about the most basic things. I thought if I could put a shortcut to the wizard, I could just have him create a new restore point each day before doing anything and then I could help him roll backward if he messes something up. Then maybe he wouldn't be so paranoid to try new things.
One of the most common functions I perform in Windows XP is to create a new folder in Explorer. As best I can tell, there is no way to create a shortcut to do this nor is there a toolbar icon for this. I admit right-clicking on an empty space and waiting for the "New" menu is not an arduous task, but it seems it should be quicker and easier. Is there a one-touch way to create a new folder in XP Explorer?
Does anybody know the shortcut for the User Accounts, where you can change the properties for the accounts that goes into the Run Dialog Box so that you have more options e.g. power user etc. instead of the main options Administrator or limited account.
How can I create a shortcut on my desktop of Hibernating the computer. Also give me the shortcut of shutting down the computer. The shortcut should be such that as soon as I click on it, the computer should go into hybernation without any further conformation.
Some 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.
if I try to create a new shortcut, I get the message that this program does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder option control panel.Am I missing a driver? What does this mean. I can find the folder option control panel, but what do I enter in the blanks?
I have connected two monitors to my computer (used to work before, had to format my pc). I installed the graphic card. When windows starts it shows on both monitors, but then one turns off.. The black screen becomes the primary window where all my icons are. When I try to go to property it shows on the black screen monitor. My guess I have to change the resolution. Is there a a shortcut key I can press to change the primary monitor. Or what should I do?
There are unwanted shortcut icons on my task bar (not the system tray).They are on top of each other and when I right-click on the one on top and select "delete" it gets deleted along with the corresponding shortcut on the desktop. I went through many answers on several forums, but they did not describe the same problem. Also, the problem appeared lately (do not remember exactly when). Other than the windows updates and service packs (SP3) and AVG8 updates, nothing got installed. I would like to get rid of these unnecessary shortcuts because they take away space for the icons of open applications.
To give you the (sort of) quick version: usually, I'm fairly careful about where I go and what I do online to avoid malware. However, I picked *something* up a few days back that spewed it all over my hard drive. Ran SAS, cleared a ton of stuff, and restarted, only to find my PC in a boot loop. Tried repairing windows incase SAS deleted an important .dll or something, but ended up having to completely reformat. Installed AVG immediately upon reformat, and everything's been fine the past few days.
However, last night something happened, and I don't know what triggered it. All of my icons (desktop, folders, start menu), were replaced by the generic windows icon. I'm able to click on most of the shortcuts and reassign the original icon, but for certain items like the recycling bin, I'm unable to do so (and attempting to restore the default under desktop options does nothing, either). While it's not that big an issue at the moment, I'm afraid there's something more going on here. although an additional AVG scan showed nothing but some tracking cookies.
I want to create a shortcut to a workgroup from my vista rt (http://lee-soft.com/vistart/) start menu. This requires me to know its path in the same way that My Computer's path is ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8- 08002B30309D}. Perhaps that is not completely true but nevertheless I need to find a path that will link me to the workgroup.I have tried right-clicking and selecting create shortcut. This puts a shortcut on my desktop but the path of it is greyed-out and simply saying the workgroup's name.
how to delete an item from the right click shortcut menu that opens up when you right click on a program icon? It seems that sometimes when I install a new program, the new program takes it upon itself to stick an option in this menu. It's getting quite lengthy and most of them I have no use for. I would like to clean it up if there is an easy way short of going into the registry.
Instead of typing http://www.anysite.com you can just type anysite then press ctrl+return and it automatically puts in the http:// and the .comyahoo + "ctrl+return" = http://www.yahoo.com
I have Firefox as my default browser however there are a few pages that only work properly in IE.I have a shortcut to one such page (HP Instant Support) and I'm wondering if there's a switch or some such gimmick that will force the shortcut to open the page in IE.
MS office shortcut bar has Word, Excel as well as others, but when I click on one, it takes up to 30 seconds to open. If I open excel from the desktop, it opens immediately. Also, if I click on start/programs and then right click on one, it takes 20-30 seconds to get the properties screen to pop open.
