Had a tech in today testing my ADSL, I just got back and fired her up to find the Icon on the desktop is missing?Any simple way to restore this, I don't want to do a system restore as I have no way of knowing what the Tech may have changed or added that will be lost.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAs you all probably know, you can create a shortcut that will automatically shut down your PC, by creating a desktop shortcut of C:WindowsSystem32Shutdown.exe. There is a catch: if you accidentally press it, there is no convenient way to stop the shutdown sequence. (you can create a CANCEL SHUTDOWN shortcut, and have the shudown shortcut have a delay (-t 10, for example), but that is cumbersome, and will take up even more desktop real estate.)So i had this idea for a solution. I tried creating a keyboard shortcut for the shutdown shortcut (and was going to do the same for the Cancel Shutdown Shortcut). And, it worked fine. The point was that I could get rid of the little shutdown shortcut icon from my desktop. So, I moved it to a file in My Documents, so it would still be available, just not sitting on the desktop. (Note: I even repeated the above process, starting in another folder, instead of starting at the desktop and the following problems still occurred)

In the "My Computer" window there is normaly a shortcut to "My Documents". But I have some how managed to remove that.

I have a friend that is new to the computing world and he is driving me crazy with questions about the most basic things. I thought if I could put a shortcut to the wizard, I could just have him create a new restore point each day before doing anything and then I could help him roll backward if he messes something up. As best I can tell, there is no way to create a shortcut to do this nor is there a toolbar icon for this. I admit right-clicking on an empty space and waiting for the "New" menu is not an arduous task, but it seems it should be quicker and easier. View 1 Replies View RelatedSome 20 shortcut icons on my screen and the last time I booted up they had all disappeared. Going through IE/Desktop they are all there. I have tried dragging them from the desktop window to the desktop screen but that is not possible as the destination is the same. I have tried right clicking the desktop screen and creating a new shortcut the new shortcut is created but only in the desktop window and not on the screen. It slows things down when there is no icon to bring up the Internet and other favourite programmes and there is no Recycle Bin.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have connected two monitors to my computer (used to work before, had to format my pc).
I installed the graphic card. When windows starts it shows on both monitors, but then one turns off.. The black screen becomes the primary window where all my icons are. When I try to go to property it shows on the black screen monitor.
My guess I have to change the resolution. Is there a a shortcut key I can press to change the primary monitor. Or what should I do?
There are unwanted shortcut icons on my task bar (not the system tray).They are on top of each other and when I right-click on the one on top and select "delete" it gets deleted along with the corresponding shortcut on the desktop. I went through many answers on several forums, but they did not describe the same problem.
Also, the problem appeared lately (do not remember exactly when). Other than the windows updates and service packs (SP3) and AVG8 updates, nothing got installed. I would like to get rid of these unnecessary shortcuts because they take away space for the icons of open applications.

View 14 Replies View RelatedTo give you the (sort of) quick version: usually, I'm fairly careful about where I go and what I do online to avoid malware. However, I picked *something* up a few days back that spewed it all over my hard drive. Ran SAS, cleared a ton of stuff, and restarted, only to find my PC in a boot loop. Tried repairing windows incase SAS deleted an important .dll or something, but ended up having to completely reformat. Installed AVG immediately upon reformat, and everything's been fine the past few days.
However, last night something happened, and I don't know what triggered it. All of my icons (desktop, folders, start menu), were replaced by the generic windows icon. I'm able to click on most of the shortcuts and reassign the original icon, but for certain items like the recycling bin, I'm unable to do so (and attempting to restore the default under desktop options does nothing, either). While it's not that big an issue at the moment, I'm afraid there's something more going on here. although an additional AVG scan showed nothing but some tracking cookies.
I want to create a shortcut to a workgroup from my vista rt (http://lee-soft.com/vistart/) start menu. This requires me to know its path in the same way that My Computer's path is ::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8- 08002B30309D}. Perhaps that is not completely true but nevertheless I need to find a path that will link me to the workgroup.I have tried right-clicking and selecting create shortcut. This puts a shortcut on my desktop but the path of it is greyed-out and simply saying the workgroup's name.

I didn't find an existing thread to the topic, so i apologize if the question has already been answered. at one point in time i had a mahjongg game installed on my windows xp run pc. i placed a shortcut on the start menu (above the frequent programs list). somehow or other, the shortcut was not removed when i uninstalled the program. my attempts to get rid of it since then are as follows:
1. when i right click on the icon, and select "remove from this list", nothing happens.
2. i attempt to run the shortcut and it says "the item you selected is not available. it might have been moved, renamed, or removed. do you want to remove it from the list?" i select yes, and nothing happens.
3. i attempt to rename the shortcut and it says "cannot rename file: cannot read from the source file or disk."
4. i open the properties and there is a message in the target type field saying "this is not a valid shortcut". i cannot change any of the fields without getting the error message in #3.
5. reinstalling the game doesn't change anything. i get the same error messages as above.
6. i searched through the registry for anything named "mahjongg", and it doesn't turn anything up.
when I click on a Shortcut on the desktop, instead of starting the program, it goes to the 'SEARCH' area...I then have to go back to the Desktop and right click on the Shortcut and click on 'OPEN' in order for the program to start.
