Setup - Cannot See The D Drive
Oct 7, 2007
I installed ubuntu, which correctly dual-booted with Windows XP SP2. I had grub as the bootloader. When I logged on to WinXP, I couldn't see my D:/ drive, which was in my Master Hard Drive (20.0 GB). I knew that it could not be seen as I had formatted it to an EXT3 filesystem. There are two partitions in my 20 gb hard disk and 7 in my 80 gb one. I could see the second partition of my 20 GB hdd using My Computer, and I could also see all the partitions of my 80 GB hdd.

I'm formatting my hard drive and re-installing XP, and I'm wondering if I can delete the system partition without any adverse effects to the system. When I try to delete it from the XP Setup disk, it warns me not to do it, but I'm trying to create a larger partition for the system. Can I delete the system partition and create a new one.

I have two hard drives, both of them with Win 2000 Pro. The First has been the master in machine one from the start. The second HDD has been in machine twoand that machine has crashed so bad that it is not worth the time, energy or money to fix it. This second HDD has important data on it that is only accessable through older programs that are only on this drive. (It is a church membership data base program and a church financial record program) I have the added problem that no one in the office has a clue where the install disk are for these programs and they are not where they are suppose to be (this was before my time). I would like to place the second HDD in the first machine and set up a dual boot so the user can choose which drive to operate from. There is the added problem that the computers only have a restore disk that came from Dell and not a full Win 2000 Pro CD.

I have a Dell XPS 400 and I'm running off of a 500 gb barracuda harddrive. Here's my problem. When I try to boot up my computer I got the following error a second or two after the windows logo shows up "A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer." The error code is STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x85D97A98, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) When I insert my windows disc, I get the following error "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". I searched online and attempted to integrate my harddrive drivers onto my windows disc. This is the source from which I got my drivers http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=173456. I then proceed to use a program called Nlite to create a new windows disc, and burnt that disc using a program called imgburner. When I use that disc and press F6 during set up I get the following message "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter.

when I try to install XP onto a new hard drive it hangs on the first blue setup page with windows setup showing on the top line and nothing at the bottom to continue with. I updated the BIOS on the original motherboard and have now fitted a new MB but still the problem is the same. Everything was fine before the original drive went down with death rattles.

I wrk for a company that has a server with Windows 2003. There are multiple 2000 and XP users who map drives from the server. Now here is where the problem begins. 2000 has no problms at all mapping drives. XP however has an issue with one folder. No matter what letter you pick, when you map the drive you get an error message "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure you are running setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102" First of all im not running any type of setup. Im merely mapping a drive. This error occurs regardless of what drive letter you pick. And the really weird part, is once mapped the drive will open in Explorer or any other mode EXCEPT through My Computer and double clicking on the drive. If you right click the drive and hit open or explore, both will open the drive just fine. You double click and you get the error. When you right click the drive you also get an "autoplay" feature which makes no sense being its a folder on the server.
It acts like it has lost its association. Like if a JPG file is associated with nothing it wont open, but if you tell it to open with paint then it will. Its really weird and after weeks of searching i have found not a single similar problem to this one i can relate or get help from. It just plain makes no sense. I am going to unshare and reshare the folder when everyone leaves and see if that helps, but it works fine in 2000 currently and not in XP just in my computer.

running XP setup from CD to try to do a repair results in "no installed drives found." when placed in another system as a slave, its found as quickly as the master HD is when its alone, and seems to function normally - chkdsk & surface scan find no errors & kaspersky finds no MBR or other problems. i even used TestDisk to rewrite the partition table and MBR to no avail. i'm able to copy off all my files, but would like to know if there are other things i can try. is there a way to XP setup repair / replace boot files on a drive other than C:? or can i use anything from a working system to fix the slave drive? can i ghost the partition and put it on a new HD and run repair there or will the boot problems be copied with the image?

My brother has a Dell laptop that came pre-loaded with Vista. He asked me to remove it and install XP for him. I've re-installed XP on several computers but I'm stuck here.
When I boot from my XP disk, I press enter to install a new copy of XP, but then it says it cannot find a hard drive and setup cannot continue

I've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine. However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work. Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could
cause the problem.

I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I dont want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.

I dropped my laptop the other day. It kept working at first, but crashed a couple of hours later. Now, when I boot-up, I get the following error message:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys. You can attempt to repari this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."I've inserted the setup CD (in an external CD-Rom drive, since my laptop doesn't have its own drive). But for some reason, setup won't start, and I keep coming back to the above error message. How do I start setup?

I have Windows XP Home, I loaded a cd burn program that trashed my system. I tried to do a repair of XP with the recovery console on my installation cd. It came up with a need for an "asms" file, which is in my I386 folder. But setup refuses to load it. So I cancelled out but setup continues to load every time I boot up even without the cd in place. How can escape from setup? My ultimate goal is to get into safe mode for a system restore.

I am trying to do a desktop installation of a software program that is located on our server. The desktop installation is located in a folder on the network drive. When I get to the file, setup.exe, I double click on it but nothing happens. It does go into "processes" in the task manager. It lists memory usage, but no cpu is used.I installed this desktop on 24 other computers with no problem. This is the only one with this problem. Why? What can I do to get this to run?

Today I noticed that what WAS my E drive is now called F and what was my F drive is now called G. I don't know how it happened, but it's wreaking havoc with Adobe Premiere because on all old projects I have to relocate all files on what were F that are now on G. It's also messing up my shortcuts.

I hooked up a friend's HD (to my computer) to install his version of Windows XP on his HD b/c his computer was having hardware-related startup problems we were in the process of fixing. In doing so, Windows XP installed setup files on MY HD. I run Win XP PRO. Not Home Ed., which is what we installed on his HD b/c that's what he had. The installation of Win Xp Home Ed went well and his computer is running fine now.Anyway, so now I have Win XP Home Ed setup files on my comp, in addition to my Win Xp Pro. Every time I restart my computer, it gives me the option of running Pro or Win Xp Setup. Not really a major biggy since I can just choose pro and go on to start my comp regularly. However, if I wanted to get rid of that and get those XP Home Ed Setup files off my computer, how would I go about it?

When I try to install Windows XP, it goes through the setup files (blue screen) like it's going to install and then I get a message that says "Setup Cannot Find CD-ROM Drive" blah blah blah. "Setup Cannot Continue". At this point it says to press F3 to reboot. So I remove the XP Disc and reboot. It then gives me an option of picking which system to log onto out of 3: Win Xp Media Center Edition, Win XP Media Center Edition again, or Windows XP Professional (which I've never had by the way. I have to choose the first one and it will go back to my computer. My computer has been having a lot of problems, so I just want to do a fresh install of XP and start over. I don't care if I lose anything

I had a botched setup of Visual C++ 6.0 a few weeks ago. Apparentlythere are still traces on my system. Whenever a user logs in Windowscomplains it can't find a visual C++ file. Spybot also catches it trying to change the registry. I have tried everything I can think of and cannnot remove whatever is left of it. I've deleted every file and registry entry assosicated with VC++ 6, checked msconfig, startup folders, and even ran a registry cleaner. Still cannot find where this pest is hiding.

I am new to this forum, so plz bear with me. I have the same problem as a previous poster with win xp. I was attempting to repair a flooder virus in my winlogon file(I know now it was an AVG glitch) and when restarting the computer my system went into a continuous start up loop. When I attempted to repair the os by replacing the file using the XP Cd; the computer goes into safemode, I get the error "xp setup cannot run under safemode", and the system reboots (repeating the process over and over).I don't want to do a clean install of xp. I've searched the web for hours trying to get answers and nothing.
