View 1 RepliesI'm running XP Pro SP2 on my desktop at home. Home built, 4 years old, AMD Duron processor. Recently (for last couple of days), any time I try to search, my entire system hangs. I checked the Microsoft articles, and found this, which I have seen cited in other threads here but include below. On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the Explorer.exe process may experience an error in Rkadmin.dll and unexpectedly quit. To work around this problem, uninstall the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. Unfortunately, I don't see the W2K Resource Kit in Add/Remove Programs, and if I try to search for the file, well...then I have to Crtl+Alt+Del to get to Task Manager to end task on the explorer window and end process on drwtsn32.exe if I only end one or the other, it still hangs.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi just bought a hp pavilion desktop that apparently has the sasser worm on it as i kept getting the countdown popup. i put on avg antivirus and removed 19 different worms and virus's. i then ran ad-aware and spybot s&d and removed over 400 entries. i have researched and applied how to get rid of the sasser virus but i still get the countdown popup occasionally. i also can not get any updates from microsoft to download. all i get is an error. since it still does odd things every now and then i think the best bet is just to completely format the hard drive. i want to get rid of everything including the hidden partition hp puts on for recovery. i received all the recovery cd's that came with the system when it was originally bought. i do not have a stand alone xp home cd for it. is win xp home on those recovery disks and are they all i will need to format the hard drive?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIs there such a program? Some software programs like, video and audio converters use a lot of CPU resources. As I don't have a modern 2 core cpu this can be annoying when doing conversions and trying to watch a h264 encoded movie at the same time. It would be cool to be able to "throttle down" some programs so as to make my computer more efficient. At least until I upgrade to 4 cores.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the windows recource kit for windows XP, 2000 and 2003. The resource kit provides a program called "Subinacl.exe". This program can be used to set permissions, edit registery items, set users, etc. Now my problem. The program works on all our windows machines (they have basically the same programs installed), except on one machine. When I try to run it there, it just hangs, it has no read or write input / output, it just stops responding. I thought about a permissions problem, but when i provide full rights to the program (cmd started as administrator), it still hangs. A security policy? checked it. All the machines have the same policy's. Actually, i don't know what the problem could be now.

So I went in and deleted stuff that showed I hadn't used for a long time. Now I cant open up microsoft office. In fact everytime I try to do anything I get a new pop up that's titled Windows Installer, and reads "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource thats unavailable" I tried to restore my computer to a previous date and time but I get the same thing?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have this strange problem with my Dell Inspiron 930. When I open Fire Fox the CPU loads jumps to 100% and my mouse cuts out. The laptop hits temperatures of 60C +. I have done a virus using Avast Anti Virus and have found nothing. I have even made it scan before windows loads. I have done the same thing with spy bot search and destroy and I am really out of Ideas. This also effects Virtual DJ and Steam (Only in the community Tab = The one with flash). I think it might be Flash that is causing this, but I don't know how to complete remove flash from my laptop so that it can be reinstalled. Can someone please tell me how to remove and tell me if they know whats happening to my system.

The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I boot up my xp pc the very last acion on bootup is a message box that states" Cannot Find Resource FIle". I go to Event Viewer and there are two items there:
1)The COM+ Messages service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
2)The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: SMPLSCSI
Until recently 1 month ago, this message box never appeared. What is SMPLSCSI and how can I make this messagebox go away?
When I right click on an icon instead of getting the pop-up menu with options I get an error message. The message box is labelled "cf99menu_.rsc". The error message states "Resource File Not Found". Clicking OK makes the box go away. It is annoying and adds a step to any function where a right click is involved.

This holds until the USB drive is disconnected and the computer is restarted. Then Windows again assigns the letter, F, to both the network resource and the USB drive.

Heres the scoop though, I just finished building an i7 930 build asus II Rampage gene motherboard, one tera byte harddrive, 3 gb 1800 mhz ddr3 ram, and a gt220 1 gb video card. It will start up show the motherboard logo, then go to the xp loading screen and start doing the scrolling loader. about on the 6th scroll it will freeze, go black, then lit up black, then black and then restart all together. Nothing in the hardware seems to be out of place so im assuming its XP itself. i have checked the bios and the tempuratures seem normal. I just fully finished this build yesterday, I installed some drivers for the right parts, which made it restart and it ran fine. Then i installed a game and played it for a little while before shutting it down, when I came back a few hours later it started with this madness.

I have reset my activex controls, ran AVG and Adaware. Nothing comes up. My ISP is wmconnect which just recently changed to Netscape connect. they have no technical support for this problem. If anyone has any ideas. My OS is Windows 2000 Pro.
