Replacement Home CD?

Apr 2, 2005

Not sure which forum to start this thread in, but this seemed as good a place as any... I have an XP Home CD which has corrupted apparently. Does anyone know of a method for contacting Microsoft to ask for a replacement CD? I have the original package, Product Key, etc. I've Googled, and can find that there apparently is a method for accomplishing this, but I can find no specifics. I'd appreciate any assistance

I upgraded my old system from 98 to XP Pro 3-4 years ago. Since then, my my XP Pro upgrade CD has gotten mispacked, 3 moves in 12 months. By luck, I have found most of my CD's including the 98 cd. PRo Replacement CD Or Download

My school was recently given a number of nice computers from a business that was replacing them. However, they wiped the hard drive clean so the OS is gone. I have the serial numbers for the XP and thought I might be able to download or purchase a CD as a replacement for the original OS. Two questions - is it possible? and where do I find what I need?

Purchasing A Replacement Pro CD W/ SP2 (Already Have An Pro License)

I have a really old retail version of WinXP Pro that doesn't have any Service Packs on it. I bought it when it first came out.

Is there any way for me to purchase a new genuine WinXP Pro CD only, that would have SP2 on it and some of the latest updates? I already have a genuine license key

Is Media A Good Replacement?

Jun 21, 2008

I need XP Professional to install and run a particular application. I have been told that XP Media is XP Pro under the hood and a good substitute. XP Media is ten dollars less that XP Pro. Which should I choose? What is added to XP Media that I might not want? Lastly, since I am buying the upgrade version. I am guessing the version of Windows 98 SE that I have will work.

Is Svchost.exe Replacement Safe?

Nov 26, 2005

ok, i'm really getting sick of this svchost file. every time as soon as i disable my zone alarm firewall svchost starts to communicate with my other networked computer and it does that too much to the point of slowing down my 3-computer LAN. i read somewhere that there is a possibility of svchost being "infected" or bugged or whatever you want to call it and that it has to be replaced with a clean one. (i ran antivirus, antispyware and numerous other 'security' tools but nothing helped, i even monitored the activity with packet monitoring software but couldn't find anything but ridiculously high network activity of all sorts)

now. i tried a lot of things about this suspicious activity but nothing helped except zone alarm which successfuly stopped the activity. the thing is, i didnt block svchost so i have no idea how it all even works, the only thing i know is that when i disable zone alarm on my laptop, it immediately starts communicating with my host pc (ICS host). i still dont have a switch, using a hub, but i dont think that represents a problem.

sorry i couln't find anything with search button so i just want to ask if it would be safe that i find svchost.exe from someone else and replace it with mine? im running win xp pro sp1.

Tips For Windows Reinstall HD Replacement

Oct 27, 2005

my system is running SLOOOW and it's annoying me. I think it's about time that I reinstall windows and, since my HD has become quiet noisy lately, I've been thinking that maybe I should kill two birds with one stone and replace my HD at the same time. I recently purchased a big external USB HD. I have the Windows CD that came with my Dell notebook, but I've never reinstalled windows. I don't want someone to walk me through the entire process...what I would really appreciate though is some suggestions re: the best way to go about backing up/recovering my settings and etc.I don't really care about most of the programs and etc. (except my anti-virus program whihc I paid for).

Replacement Installation Disk Needed

Jul 5, 2005

A couple of years ago I purchased a computer with Windows XP pre-installed. I recently had a bad crash, and corrupted my hard drive. The recovery disk does not work.I need an installation disk to reinstall my system. Can I get one from somewhere? As I understand it, if I go to a shop and buy a Win XP installation disk, I'm really paying for the licence. The disk itself is a trivial expense.I have already paid for a licence for XP. But I don't have the disk to install it.I don't want to have to buy a new copy and pay for a licence which I already own.

Home And Pro Not Playing Nice Together Via Home Wifi?

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall. However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

WFP Needs CD Of SP3 Home 32 Bit

Aug 20, 2010

Whilst attempting to upgrade Ad-Aware I clicked that button and was taken to Cnet. On clicking download a window advised that I needed Hebrew language to make the thing work. There was no option so I thought it must be part of the new version Ad-Aware but immediately I had accepted it, Windows File Protection said " files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions" etc Insert Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD. Since SP3 was installed as an upgrade,Would System Restore mend this problem? I made a new restoration point this month. My last backup disc was 18 long mths ago. I don't know how to make a CD of SP3 so what's the easiest way of sorting this out. BTW, my pc hasn't been restarted.

SP2 Is Same For Home & Pro?

Feb 20, 2005

I have xp pro on my laptop at work. I am thinking I need to do a clean install on a computer running xp home. We're on dialup and I'd rather not try downloading it again unless I have to. I haven't looked yet but I'm hoping MS put a huge .exe file on my laptop hd and it's still there. I used the MS update feature to automatically update it when sp2 came out.

where I could make a "slipstreamed bootable cd" with xp and sp2 for a computer. I was thinking this would be nice to have - my mom is not technologically inclined. The computer is a dell and I haven't thought til now to check with them and see if they made a cd available for it with sp2. If this works, though, I shouldn't need that, right? Wondering if I can do it for each machine running xp? On my way to face the blue screen on my mom's nonbooting computer. Maybe y'all will have some encouraging words for me on my arrival.

Reinstallation Of Home

Oct 5, 2008

It's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.

Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.

Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.

I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.

I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.

I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.

I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.

WIN Home Vs WIN 98SE & Ram?

Feb 26, 2005

if XP cleans up RAM better than 98 SE, I listen to online internet music constantly and I even though I restart every couple of hours, it still wants to freeze up and practically stop. I used to have a little ram reclaimer that would automatically restore unused or once used RAM, but it ended up using too much RAM to work and actually caused more problems than having it trying to restore usable RAM. I eventually removed it and that seemed to help for a while.

OEM Home Work On A Different PC?

Jan 28, 2008

Ok so I have a OEM version of XP home from a old dell that is being replaced by my new build. Is it possible to use the reinstall disk to put xp on the new rig? I have heard that the OS will look for tags in the mobo bios and won't install if it can't find them.If it won't work would an upgrade version of xp work. They are cheaper but need verification that you own a copy of a MS operating system, could I use the OEM xp for verification. If none of this will work is there anyother way to get around buying a full version of xp home? I don't want to spend $200 on the OS if I can avoid it.
