I have a server that has decided to goto sleep over Xmas. The screen is black and you can't access anything at the console. I can remote into the server, but I get the same black screen. The software suppliers for the application on the server have requested we remote into the registery. We have tried this in house before atempting to access the server and have not had any luck.
View 9 RepliesI have a computer that does not boot and gives the following error "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINNTSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM" So I did a goole search and brought up an article on the Microsoft Support site telling me how to start the computer using the Windows XP Home install cd and go through the Recovery Console to try the restore the backup registery. This article can be found at the following address: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 just for reference.When I get into the Recovery Conbsole it does not ask me for the Administrator password or any password for that matter but I can not complete the instructions given in the article on the Microsoft Support webpage.

I am running Windows XP Home with SP2 and have recently been having problems with a vundo trojan. As far as I can understand, to get rid of the remaining files I need to install the RC from the Windows XP install disk. However, I purchased my notebook from Dell and it came with a CD entitled "Reinstall CD - Microsoft Windows XP Home Editiont - Including Service Pack 1a".I'm wondering if I can use that CD to install the RC. And I've read that the RC doesnt work with SP2, so should i Add/Remove SP2 before installing this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is (to cut a long story short) that I have some dodgy .dll files, messing up my computer (XP) and preventing me from installing anything (not fun when the my computer fixer guy has reinstalled windows, failed to fix it, charged me fifty quid for the privelege, and left me with next to no software on it - not even word).i bought a very informative xp troubleshooting manual yesterday, and i can see my only option is to replace the files using the windows recovery console (I cant replaced them from within windows as its always using them).However, when I try to access the recovery console (in the manner advocated by my book, windows help, and numerous internet pages), by booting up from my recovery cds, and pressing R, i get taken to system recovery, a user friendly interface displaying 3 options for reformatting the whole system, and nothing else. this is obviously not the command prompt interface for the recovery console that i was expecting to be faced with.

There is no admin password on the system that I know of. My command of DOS is limited, is there anyway of gaining access to the directory using the recovery console? When I go into the recovery area it does not ask me which version I want to use and doesn't ask me for a password. Then when I type a command it tells me 'access is denied'. I have gotten some commands to work (ie chkdsk, chkdsk /r fix, and fixboot). Also, when it wants me to type a command it has C:> before it and doesn't mention windows anywhere. I would really appreciate it if someone would help - there are a few files on the computer that I would really like to keep!

I've scoured the internet and all the solutions tell me I need to use the Windows setup screen to get to the recovery console. My problem is that my computer never gets to the setup screen. I have windows XP Professional on my PC celeron 1.2 ghz, Mercury 810, 256 sd ram. I think my PC is infected with a virus that doesn't let me access Registry Editor, Group Policy Editor, MS-Dos from windows and all those vital tools. As soon as try to access them the system restarts automatically. Moreover, my antivirus program doesn't detect any virus (may be this too is the work of a virus). Has any body any idea what this problem is? Is this the work of a virus? If yes, I would like to know how to detect and eliminate this virus.

I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.

In Windows Vista SP1 and XP SP3 the remote desktop client has been updated to version 6.1. In this new version running mstsc /console to get to the console session no longer works. With RDP 6.1 you need to use the new /admin flag.
