Random Shut Down
Dec 8, 2005
Windows randomly & intermittenly just shuts down in the middle of things. This started on my daughter's computer running Win XP SP1 at the time.I suspect a boot sector virus.so I took the hard drive > formatted it > and reinstalled Win XP on my computer at home (which was working fine) they moved so it's been until now before I had a chance to reunite the hard drive with the computer well, first off couldn't boot at all, so out of frustration I formatted the drive again and installed Win 98se as floppy was all I could get to work.so I can boot up ok in win 98, but same problem.sometimes when viewing a file, looking at the contents of a CD, etc.,

I am wondering if they are all related. When I click start>shut down, computer hangs up for about 5 minutes before the box, shut down, restart, etc. shows up-computer then shuts down normally. When I print documents, the first will print, then it takes a long time before another will print. The printer is new and works fine. It is connected to this computer, but shared over a home network. Does the same with the other computers in the network. The computer screen will occasionally go dark and just reboot.

my computer is weird to the max....here are some problems just to name a few: when running random programs, i get fatal execution errors, i get messages asking to debug random apllications or terminate them, i get messages to just terminate things, i get messages that start coming up whenever i try and open something and whatever i try and open it says it has to close....sometimes my whole screen turns blue with white typewriter font saying i have hit a problem and i need to shut down (blah blah if the problem persists contact blah blah if this is the first time uve seen this error just reboot blah blah) sometimes my computer locks up and i get stupid errors.....they tell me to send error reports, that does no good.....i get them 24/7 too....basically im getting error messaages with lots of zero's / name files in them and my only options really are to terminate things (things being applications im trying to run).....this varies from aol instant messenger, to games, to internet browser, to word, to paint....anything....ive run ad-aware, spybot, mcaffee, ive checked my hijackthis logfile and deleted unwanted things.....ive run chkdsk on bootup, ive run defrag, ive run system restore idno how far back, ive run clean disk, and other stuff.....i think most of these problems have started once i downloaded the service pack 2 package from

I have just had a mate of mine build a pc for me, from scratch, with all new parts. However, for some reason I get a random freezing of the screen resulting in a hard shut down from the Power button. This has happened a few times now, more than twice while in IE6 and once on the desktop. I originally thought it might be IE6 so I have installed IE7 and firefox just to be sure, then it froze while on the desktop straight after i logged in. The PC isn't running hot at all, as I said it froze after I logged in and there is definately no spyware or anything as its a new PC and the only thing i've installed on it is AVG & IE7.

I keep getting random crashes and I don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem. Every so often I get random STOP error messages, and from the articles on the Microsoft Support site it appears to be a driver problem, but I don't know which driver. These are the errors I got recently (in order)

My computer seems to just hang up on me like it gets stuck in "idle" mode and doesn't let me have any keyboard/mouse control and I am forced to do a manual shut down and lose any data I may have been working on.

I just got a new computer, and it's all used parts, except the hard drive. Since I've been using it, there has been odd bits of lag at random times. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, it will lag. It happens every few minutes or so for about a second, then everything works again. When I'm listening to music, or watching videos, it will skip horribly for a second, then resume playing. It's REALLY getting on my nerves, cause I record music, and its messing up my tracks. Even as I type this, its lagging... More frequently than before, actually. Any idea of what it could be?

So today, I jumped on my computer, opened up IE Explorer, and went to Facebook. While facebook was loading, my computer seemed to have froze for roughly ten seconds. I figured it was just a random hang up so I ignored it. Unfortunately, about 45 seconds later, it did it again, and it continued to do so, even now while I am typing. I was browsing through the forums and I noticed a few people had the same problem as me, so I tried disabling the Search Indexer. I restarted my computer, and it seemed to have done the trick, but maybe 3 minutes later, it started freezing again.

My problem started on Wednesday night. I was playing Guild Wars, an online game when my computer froze up. I didn't get the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death', but rather my screen went blank. I thought this was a repeat of an earlier problem I had encountered with the game, and I figured my previous solution would work.
I checked my BIOS and there seemed to be nothing wrong and my AGP settings were as they were previously, with my card operating at 4x because it was what solved my problem previously.

I had the same system configuration for over years and never had any problems. Just recently I started using wireless connection rather than regular LAN.I started having randomly freezing problem while browsing internet or even once playing game.More specifically, all applications but the mouse freezes randomly and then after about 1 sec the screen flashes into black, but it turns back to the windows after another sec or two and then everything just froze, not able to move the mouse any more nor open up Process Manager. My only option is hit the hard-reset button and restart the windows.Everything back to normal after restart. Since the problem occurs randomly, its really hard for me to know where to diagnose the problem.

I've had problems with my laptop recently and it has been back for warranty repair. To their credit it was only gone 8 days total but despite them running tests on it overnight they didn't experience the problem I'm having. Unfortunately for me when I got it back it is *still* happening. The laptop has 2x RAM slots and in each is a brand new stick of 512mb DDR400 since they suspected it might be a RAM issue. So far it happens at random times and is proving really difficult to pinpoint. Here's what I've tried so far and the troubleshooting I've done.
1. Reseat both RAM chips.
2. Try using both sticks of RAM, on their own, in each slot
3. Unplugged all external hardware (mouse, external HD, WLAN card)
For some reason if I only have 1x stick of RAM in 1 of the 2 available slots and nothing in the other I don't seem to get problems at least until earlier tonight. I've since switched the RAM stick out to see if it happens with the other but it hasn't yet. However, the crashes are so random I can have no problems for hours and then it suddenly crashes, other times it seemed to happen within a few minutes of getting into XP. It's a virtual clean install of XP with only drivers and updates installed. The only BSOD error message I've gotten so far is the following one, any others I see after I'll edit to the message. If you can help me at all I'll be VERY grateful, I don't particularly want to have to send the laptop off again if I can fix it myself. If it's a hardware issue though it'll go back.

I had some problems recently and with the help of one of the TSG locals, I located and got rid of a malicious file. However, I had a problem at that time that I could not resolve, and am still trying to beat it down. Now I am beginning to get random errors I can only run Spybot S & D in safe mode. Progress bar for it will show it at about 39.../56120. Then the system reboots itself, sometimes twice...and sometimes there comes the message that my computer has recoverd from a serious problem I have a similar problem with running PandaScan, it just won't make it all the way through.I know I have tons of stuff running in the background and would like to cut out as many of those as I can, I've just not gotten that far yet.I'm posting my HJT log in hopes someone can help spot my culprit.

I've given up.. This problem has been occuring for quite awhile now and I'm really clueless as to what is causing it. I've conducted a destructive system recovery via the copy of windows on my HDD twice, and also from a windows CD. I've ran memtest for both my RAM and HD and both tests always come back OK... The errors occur randomly.. sometimes my computer can stay on for 4+ hours without one, sometimes they appear within 30mins of turning on my PC.I'm a computer newbie, but I wrote down some info from the last blue screen errors:
Quote: STOP: 0x000000D1
SYMTDI.sys - Address BADC3DB7
STOP: 0x0000008E
Win32k.sys - Address BF8011A3 The most common errors I remember included something about either one of the following:
DRIVER_IRQL _NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
I've attatched the minidump files I have since last re-booting my system. I hope I've provided enough info.

Recently i have been having lots of crc errors whilst unzipping files. My initial thought was that one of my hard drives was on its way out. I had checked them all using the manufacturers diagnotic ultility (Seatools) with all testing features and each one, on all drives, returned without error. I thought my suspicions were confirmed when i turned my drive on for the BIOS not to recognise one of my SATA's (a Barracuda 7200.11). After a bit of research i found out that this was prob not the cause of my crc errors as the SD15 version of the firmware supplied with my drive had a bug and causes the drive to go into a hibernated state, a separate issue i'm trying to deal with. After removing this particular hard drive along with Vista out of my system i installed win XP onto another drive temporarily. I am having the same problems with the CRC errors on my other drives which seem to be operating normally. The kind of files i'm talking about are fairly large usually demos or trailers etc in .rar format.
As i understand it CRC errors can also come from faulty RAM. I have recently RMA'd some faulty RAM back to OCZ and the stuff in my system currently is the brand new RAM i got sent back from my RMA. I know this can be causing the CRC errors and occasional random restarts regardless of how new it is so i have checked both sticks individually using memtest86. I only had time to let them do 1 pass each but both came through error free.If any of you out there have any suggestions for what else i can do to figure out what is wrong i would very much appreciate it. Could it be a lack of wattage on the psu causing the restarts? Processor? I'm stuck,

I'm running Windows xp professional, and I recently upgraded the hardware in my computer. After this upgrade my computer would infrequently just restart, about once a week or so, but I left for a trip to vancouver for a week and when I got back and turned my computer on the problem started getting much worse. Now it happens about ten times a day, and I can't just leave it off because I don't have another computer and I need this one for classes. Also, when I try to play games it shuts down, or freezes about ten minutes after I start. I have run AVG, Spybot, and ad-aware, and the problem remains. This problem seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while I'm doing something, and sometimes it happens when the computer is doing nothing.

I know it is stupid but i have put up all the defense i can, firewall, antivirus, but somehow these nasty buggers just slip through. I am no computer expert, just an average user, so i don't want to reinstall the entire windows XP and go through all the update process. So the question is: how can i track down whatever is causing this random, time-to-time IE pop ups? When i do my research the term active scripting comes up all the time (for pop ups). I wonder if this is the culprit and will this thing remains active even I don't have IE windows opened.

I am having a frequent crash problem in WOW. It happens at random times and I get a BSOD describing kmixer.sys as the culprit.I ran Memtest for about 11 hours and didn't get any errors, and I have also been playing Prey and Battlefield 2 which doesn't cause any problems either. I think that should be the main stuff, I just did a fresh XP install about a month ago and have plenty of paging space.

What can I do to make sure that henceforth and forevermore my SysTray displays ALL my active Icons? Lately, it's been like playing a slot machine, sometimes taking 8 or 9 reboots to get all the Icons to show up. I've tried every conceivable combination of actions available after I R-Click the bar, to no avail. All I want is to see each and every icon in the tray everytime I boot up with no excaptions.

I work in a computer lab at a community health center. I just started working there and I realized no one in the building had any of the admin passwords to the computers. I brought in a Windows password reset disc and reset all of the admin passwords. This is when I got the bright idea to install the Adobe creative sweet at work off of my external HD. I only tried this on my computer, and the installation failed. Half of the CS was installed and half wasn't. This seemed to have caused some problems for me.When I attempted to startup the computer, my desktop would load, but some of the icons wouldn't fully load (they were stuck as the default exe icon). I could move my mouse, but when I put the cursor over the Start menu button, all I got was an hour glass. I couldn't click on any of icons at all.
I rebooted into safe mode and it worked perfectly. I tried to remove the CS in add/remove programs, but it failed. I think this is because it wasn't fully installed. I deleted all of the folders I could find (other then flash player and adobe reader), then downloaded the CS4 cleanup script, but this failed to clean up my system as well. When I went back into add/remove programs and tried to uninstall the CS, it said it had already been removed, and it disappeared off the list. Something tells me it isn't fully removed.I tried a selective startup where I turned off all of the startup programs. This seemed to have worked. So I started going back throught the list allowing some of the start up items. I thought that it was the CS4 startup programs that were causing my troubles (which for the most part they were), but now even with ALL startup values disabled, it still freezes.I can use the internet, but if I click on the start menu it takes a while to load. When it finally loads, whether I click off of it or on a program, it disappears and my computer freezes. I can still use my mouse.

My computer restarts once in a while at random times. I don't think it has anything to do with the programs I use at the time because it seems to restart even if I'm not doing anything but listen to music. There are also times when my computer just stops. However, sometimes the error messages are different. I've received 0x0000007F and 0x000000DE error messages before. I've tried replace my old 300 watt power supply with a 420, but I still get error messages. I've run memtest and found no errors with my memory. The file that I attached to this post contains my most recent minidump of one of the three errors and a Hijack This log.

I just got back from LA, and like any person would, I went straight to check my email. After around 30 mins of reading through mail, the entire screen froze. The mouse wouldn't move, the loading bar just stopped, etc.
After around 10 mins, everything unfroze. I haven't installed any programs recently, and my computer worked fine before I left. This happens on average once every half an hour. Also, this only apparently happens on my account, not any other.

I've had this problem for over a year now, and posted this on several tech support forums, and to no avail. So here's my problem.I built my computer about a year ago, and after a couple of weeks of usage, I noticed that my computer would randomly freeze when I'm playing games, using IM clients, and P2P software, although it would also freeze when I'm pretty much using any program (it just seems freezing during games is the most common).I think this is purely a software issue because I'm dual-booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04, and I don't have this problem in Ubuntu.
I uninstalled my onboard sound card drivers because I have a dedicated sound card (I thought those drivers were conflicting), but this didn't solve the issue. I took out one of my video cards (I'm running an SLI system) and that didn't solve it. I uninstalled reinstalled my video card drivers, to no avail.I reseated my sound card and video card, and that didn't work.

Slowly i started realising a general slow down in my comp on a general.. I don't seem to understand what could have caused this.. i have ran full virus scans.. and every feature offered by norton utilities..nothing out the ordinary has happened with the computer..and no processes are eating the CPU.

I've seen a few threads about this but they're all kind of different or whatnot. My computer (three times tonight alone!) has just randomly re-started while I'm in the middle of work. When it comes back, it tells me that the system just recovered from a series error. When I report it, I'm taken to a Microsoft page about Windows Service Pack 2 and updating my driver. I've checked and I have SP2 and when I try to update the driver it tells me they couldn't find a better match than what I'm already using.
I've checked System Information and automatic restart isn't even checked yet this has happened a lot. Like I said, three times tonight it's happened. I've run my virus scanner, I've run Ad-aware SE Personal, SpySweeper, and Spybot and anything that comes back and is quarantined or deleted hasn't fixed the problem.
