System Wont Boot: Backing Up Data To A External Drive?

Aug 10, 2009

Well like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.

Backing Up To C Partition To CD

Feb 25, 2010

after messing around with several backup programs, Paragon has proved to be the most practical HOWEVER when I select to backup my C partition it wants to back up over 8 GIGS of data. Converting gig to meg and seeing as CD's can hold only 700mb that's about fifteen CD's that I'm going to have to use! I don't even think that there's a Flash drive large enough to back up what these recovery programs want to back up.I've upgraded and patched .net up to 3.5 (1.1 is broken for some reason). I've upgraded and patched XP Home to service pack 2 and have upgraded and patched IE to release 7.I have various utitlity and virus scanner programs on my system but doing an file observation through Advanced System Care, I have nowhere near 9 gigs of data that I need to back up.So the only thing I can think is that Paragon is trying to back all the formated trash data from the umpteen system formats that I've done.I've used several wipers and asked Paragon to exclude auxilary files but still insists that I have close to 9 gigs of data to back up?

Backing Up SP2 Installation CD

Sep 18, 2006

I bought a full copy of Windows XP with SP2 included to install on my Intel Mac. Since it was a fairly expensive piece of software, I wish to protect this investment by creating a backup copy of the installation CD, in case anything should occur that damages the one that I bought. How can I do this so that the backup CD will install properly? I know very little about images and creating bootable discs, so any guidance would be very much appreciated. One problem that I know I wish to avoid: a fellow that I asked at a computer store said that he had tried but failed, finding that the new copy would not accept the serial number once he had installed it.

Backing Up The Registry: Msisadrv.sys Missing Or Corrupt?

Sep 20, 2008

I was trying to backup the registry of my Windows XP Home edition desktop, and I was going to use the program ERDNT. Mistakenly, I copied the folder over from my Vista laptop, forgetting that it carried backups of my Vista registry. Now, everytime the computer starts up I get an error saying that msisadrv.sys is missing or corrupt. What can I do?

Few Questions

Apr 15, 2005

I had to reformat my HD and decided to try creating two partitions on the C drive: one for the OS (Win XP Home SP2) and one for programs.
1. Everytime I install a progarm components are installed on the C drive anyway. Mainly stuff that is pinned to the start menu. Does this have to be this way? Can I change it so that the Start menu reads from the same drive I install my programs into?
2. If not, can I repartition the drive to enlarge the partition that the OS is on without causing any problems? When I created the partitions I guess I made the OS partition too small. If I use Partition Magic can I resize the two partitions and not cause any complications?
3. Are there settings that can be changed to change where files are automatically saved? For example the favorites folder. Do they have to save on the C drive? Is it bad to change the dirve if it is possible?

Few Questions

Apr 21, 2006

Everytime I restart the computer, it makes me switch between 2 of the same OS's. There's a list that says:
Windows XP SP2
Windows XP SP2 (boot screen)
It makes me select one and gives me a 30 second time limit. This is a little annoying, so does anyone know if there's a way to remove this and auto-choose one of the two instead of asking me?
Also, after windows loads, it brings me up to the User Sign-In screen. Thing is, I'm the only user that uses this computer and pressing my icon to load windows is a little time consuming.
Lastly, everytime I load up windows, a "You still have files waiting to be written on your CD Drive" pops up. Whenever I click it, there are no files on there waiting to be written and it's been fairly annoying.

Some Questions

Dec 4, 2006

Limewire randomly starts up on my computer. It can be running fine and suddenly it'l start opening up. I've checked my settings for it and I dont see anything that would cause it to start like this. Any ideas?
Even more mystifying is that over the last 2 weeks or so, if my computer is inactive for a fairly short period of time, I think 10 mins or maybe even less, it'll go back to the XP login screen. Thankfully from that screen it doesnt take that long to get back in, but the 30 secs or whatever it does take, all told, is quite annoying. I hate watching a movie and suddenly seeing it quit to that and having to just wait there all this time.Any advice?

A Few Various Questions.

Apr 23, 2007

I have got some questions, mostly minor, but questions nonetheless that have been stacking up over time. There aren't more than a few right now, but I'm sure some more will surface in the future.
I am having consistency problems with every time I restart my computer. I have a toolbar on my Taskbar that lets me access my desktop, but every time I restart my computer, it doesn't stay there, and I have to enable it. The same goes for having the Autohide feature enabled for the Taskbar.
-------
This question is similar to the above, but it's slightly different, as I will explain. I use the Windows TweakUI for a few things, and one of them is to automatically log into my Windows account since it's the only one. And when I turn that on, then restart, it works. When I restart again, it no longer works, and asks for my login stuff. Annoying!
The icon for .zip files on my computer are no longer there... I tried using the "rebuild icons" thing in TweakUI and it does not seem to work.
I have two hard drives installed on my computer. The secondary one, which I never use other than storage, is not always detected by my computer on start up. I have to restart a few times to get it to show up. I'm sort of worried that it's failing or something. I checked the connections inside and it all seems to be fine.
Alright, I think that is about it for now. By the way, I use Windows XP Pro, SP2.
