View 2 Replies View RelatedI just built my first computer and I don't have an OS yet. I do have 2 copies on Win XP Home Edition that I found that I may or may not have installed yet.I was going to buy the Win 7 Professional Upgrade online from digital river. It comes with a download for your computer and a disk kit for 13 dollars more that they ship to you. Thing is, this will be a CLEAN INSTALL on a brand new terabyte hard drive. I have read about people doing clean installs with the DISK of Win 7 Upgrade Media, but it seems too complicated. I also know that the best way to upgrade Win XP to Win 7 was to do a clean install and backup your files. But im not going to have anything stored on Win XP.I want to install Win XP Home Edition, connect to the internet, download the Win 7 upgrade media. And install that.
I have heard when attempting to upgrade not clean install a new os. For example the whole win98 to w2k doesnt fly good because of the fat32 to ntfs deal. so what about upgrading w2k pro with ntfs to xp pro with ntfs? is this a good thing to do now a days or is it still better to just perform a clean install over my existing os. I really would like to keep my stuff intact, but I dont want a xp upgrade. So what type of issues have you guys had upgrading w2k to xp pro?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Windows XP Professional for several years and am quite happy with it. My roommate has a desktop that she bought some years ago and it came with Windows XP Starter Edition installed. Lately I've been trying to help her upgrade from her XP SE to XP Pro but before doing this I have some questions. Is Windows XP SE at all upgradable to XP Pro? The reason I ask this is because:1.1 I accessed "How to install or upgrade to Windows XP" on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941, but it does not mention Windows XP Starter Edition as one of the options of OS to be upgraded (only mentions Win98, Windows ME and Windows 2000 Pro 1.2 I also accessed http://www.comztek.com/Admin/ProdMan...1.asp?name=228 and it says "You may not upgrade to Windows XP Professional from Windows XP Starter Edition,. as this goes against Microsoft's End User License Agreement (EULA) 2. In case Windows XP SE can in fact be upgraded to XP Pro, I have 2 questions:2.1 To start the installation should I simply boot the desktop normally and then insert the Win XP CD on the CD-ROM unit and choose the option "upgrade"?2.2 Will files in the desktop and installed programs be preserved? Or will my roommate need to install all the program she uses again? What about local files of Outlook Express and the MSN Messenger emoticons? Will these be lost?

I also have an XP Profesional CD, however the compatibility test on that CD says "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD". So it seems I can't upgrade with the disc I have.I want XP Pro because I have 8GB of RAM, and I don't like Vista. Also I want to upgrade rather than fresh install so I can keep all the programs etc. I currently have. What are my options on upgrading to a 64 bit version of XP Pro? What do I need to buy?

I want to wipe the entire harddrive of EVERYTHING on it and have windows like when it was first installed. View 2 Replies View RelatedDell with Windows XP Professional on it and 160 GB hard drive. When I got the computer home I went right into the Administrator Identity and began to use the computer. I was thrilled with it, so much harddrive and 512 MB Ram. After I had put a lot of my data on the computer I thought I might try another identity for other uses. So I went in to create a new identity. When I had finished with the new Identity the original Administration Identity that I had been working with for months no longer existed. After much consternation I did a system restore and got my original identity back. But what I want to know is how can I create a new identity without losing everything in the original Identity and I realize I should have gone on through Administrator to create the first identity. The original thread for this question has been closed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 3000 with a serious problem, it won't load Windows XP and Windows XP is the installed OS.
What happened before the error:
i tried to install Norton Systemworks 2006. Before this, computer was working fine, and yes, I did scan it for viruses. None were found. computer had a partition, but the partition was removed.
Now, I got this computer from a confused cousin, and the history is as follows;
She bought the computer new. However, there was this strange partition in there that seemed to be duplicating everything (or so she told me), so she took it to a friend to have the partitions removed. Okay, the computer worked fine after that. Actually, better than fine, it worked better than it had new. I know, lol, because I tried using it once before and again after.
Now, flash forward a few months and her free trail of McAfee that came with the computer ends and she realizes that she needs some sort of security on it. So she buys Norton as suggested by another friend of hers. Knowing I know something of computers (and she's not all that sure), she gets me to install Norton.
I do.
And upon re-starting, I get after the Acer load screen a black screen with "Load error! Press any key to reboot." I press enter, but nothing happens.
So, in it goes to the friendly computer guy who uses the disks that came with the machine to restore it, and it comes back exactly as it was before I installed Norton, only, minus all her saved stuff. Okay, so obviously if there was a problem it has to be gone now, right?
Well, evidently not as when I install Norton again, guess what happens? Right. It's back to the black screen of death telling me, "Load Error! Press any key to reboot."
Now, it did have Norton Ghost on it, and as per the instructions in the book that comes with Norton, I disabled it before trying to install Systemworks because the first time this happened I didn't. I've tried calling the computer tech that fixed it for me before, but I guess he doesn't want to deal with it anymore because he won't return my phone calls or my emails.
how can she solve the problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt seems quite severe and I have no idea where to start. When power on my laptop, the screen comes up as usual asking me if i want to enter bios. the next thing i see on the screen, is it checking the cd drive for a boot device, at which point (if there is no cd in there) the laptop automatically restarts. I tried using the windows xp setup cd to boot, but that wont help, I dont want to delete everything on my laptop as all my work is on there! Ive tried using another boot cd (ultimate boot cd) but thats way to complicated, i dont know which utility to choose.I also dont have a floppy drive on my laptop, and im running winxp home edition.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to fix my friend's computer. He has an acer laptop running windows xp professional. He said he got a virus and it shut down. When he started it back up it got as far as the windows xp loading screen. This is where it is stuck. It just keeps loading and keeps loading. He left it on for a few hours and it did nothing. We have restarted it like 20 times and still nothing. It won't let me boot to the virus cd i have (malewarebytes virus cd). I changed the boot order and still nothing. I have also tried all the options (None of these options worked eirther) ...
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (Your most Recent Settings That worked)
Start Windows Normally
At the top of the screen it says "We Apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Know Good Configuration to revert to the most recent setting that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally."
I also tried all the advanced boot options and nothing worked. It doesn't even give me the option to boot to the cd. It's not showning up that there is a cd.
How can i solve this?
I decided to "reinstall" Windows XP on my laptop. I stuck the reinstall disk into the computer and let it go. After about 1 hour of "reinstalling", the computer restarted, after that, the window was only one half the size and I couldn't change the monitor resolution size. (but, it showed the old desktop information so I knew right away that I hadn't actually reinstalled to the original state, but just reinstalled over the current desktop).
I restarted the computer to see if the window screen would enlarge to the full size. It did return to the full screen size, but Now, it freezes at the part of startup where the screen says "Windows is starting up". I left it on for 20 minutes and it was still frozen. SHould I insert the Windows XP disk again, to start over or what? Or click reboot after hitting the F2 button??
