What the 5.1.2600.2827 patch does? If I understood it correctly it changes the system's default tcp ip limit. How does it operate and which benefits does it bring? I have checked the event viewer and found 17- 4226 entries. Last question. Is it safe?
I have heard that there is a patch to change your windows product key. I can not find it on Microsoft's website, does anyone know how to change the product key windows xp pro runs off of???
If I double-click a file (or folder) in Windows Explorer, by default the computer opens the file or folder in another program (Virus Scan) and begins to scan it. Obviously, I don't want this. Normally, I should be able to hit ENTER, double-click, or right-click and select the first option, which should be open the folder or file in Explorer. However, this is not so, and I can't figure out what Default setting I changed in order to change the Default operation for any files or folders I select. I've poked around in the File Types tab of Folder Options (for Explorer) but this doesn't work
When I try to change it to Firefox or any other browser, I try it 2 ways, one, by going to Start> set Program access anf defaults, and the other way by clicking the browser I want and when it says "Firefox is not your default, would you like to makeit so" I click yes andit seems to act like it is changing my browser, but then when I try to go to a site it keeps opening it with Avant. I never had this problem when I used only IE and wanted to change my default to Firefox. It always worked then but since I loaded Avant and started using it I can't get back to my other browsers. I also tried using Tools> Internet options> programs> and clicking on "make IE default browser and that did change it to IE but I couldn't get back to FF as default browser.
I use CorelDraw and with it comes a little app called Bitstream Font navigator. I try to use it as little as possible though as it always messes up my system fonts. Normally it comes right again after a reboot. This time though it won't change back. Seems it's stuck on Tahoma or something. how to change it back to whatever the default system font is?
When you send a link through your browser, it defaults to Outlook. Is there a way to change the default to say Yahoo Mail. If not, how do I fix Outlook to make my Optimum Online connection the way Outlook connects, not my old dialup?
I am using thunderbird as my email. When I get either a word attachment or A Power point attachment. windows xp wants to open it in microsoft word or power point. How can I change the default to open office
Sometimes when you add things to XP, the installation files are needed. XP will prompt for the installation CD.To facilitate the process, you can copy the i386 folder on the CD to you local hard drive and change the registry, so that XP will look for them automaticallyEdit these 2 change the value to the correct i386 folder (eg. e:i386 to c:i386)change to the correct drive letter
Internet explorer default pages for events such as navigation canceled, navigation failed, offline information, and blank page are stored in the registry. You can replace these pages with your own if you would like to customize Internet Explorer.
On my Dell 8250, I added a 1800 Flat Panel display and when I went to load the drivers, I found the Properties button greyed out. I went to device manager and no monitor was listed not even the Default Monitor. I've looked all over and can't find a clue on how to ungrey the Properties button.

It's a mole hill of a problem, but it is a bit annoying to have to click on my principal drive ("C") every time I'm doing a "save". I have enclosed an excerpt of a screen shot of my "save as" window to display how the default drive being automatically selected is the "D" drive rather than the "C" drive that I use primarily. To be honest, I don't know whether this can be corrected by a software change, or whether it's the way the two hard drives are connected in my computer.
My VPR Matrix (XP Home) Notebook's screen can ONLY be seen in the sunlight--but even then it is nearly impossible to see! What I want to do is view the computer on my external monitor, so I can transfer some files to another computer--but I can't see to change the settings. Can this be done just using 'keystrokes' or is there some other way?FYI: I bought this computer from BestBuy. It was quite expensive in 2003. recently, I brought it back to have it repaired. The Geek Squad wrote up a work order and charged me a $238.00 non-refundable deposit (as the warranty was no longer in effect). They told me they'd have to send it to California to be repaired.
I have a Dell Dimension 2400, with Windows XP Home Edition. I installed Symantics PC Anywhere 9.2 and it reset my screen resolution to 640x480, I've tried to change it to original setting of 1024x768 but it won't let me change it.
And of course you can go in and change it to sort by "Type" or view as "Icons" or "Thumbnails" but as so as you close it it reverts, and the next time you open it it will be back to "List" view, arranged by "Name."Having it sorted by name is acceptable, so as i said it never really bothered me, but now one of my computers is sorting by "Modified" which is just not working for me.So basically I'm trying to find out if there is a way to change the default folder/file view in these basic Open, Save, Save As, etc dialog box's.
Is there NO ONE who knows how to fix this: I'd like to be able to just click on a scheduled task and have it run. However the default is set to show the properties of the task. (If I just click on the task in Control Panel, the Properties of the task show) How can I change the default from Properties to Run?
I am running XP SP3.I have been doing some desktop customization and somehow have gotten all of my .lnk files to behave strangely. If I double-click a .lnk file (a shortcut) it opens an explorer window (file browser not internet explorer) to the "my computer" directory.(for example, if i double-click my recycle bin it opens the recycle bin folder if i make a shortcut to the recycle bin and double-click that it opens an explorer window set to "my computer")if I right-click the .lnk file I see that the "explore" option is bolded indicating that this is the default action of a double-click. if instead, i choose "open" then the .lnk file behaves normally. now, i know that in order to change the default actions for a file type, i go to control panel->folder options->file types and find the extension that i want to modify.for some reason .lnk is not in my list of file types.... so then i tried adding it to my list but when i do this it shows up after i have done it but "apply" is greyed out and then if i close the folder option window and return to it there is no .lnk extension in the file types list.
Can't change default Monotor for higher Resolution in XP?I have tryed Control Panel-Display-Settings-Advanced-Monitor Tab and I find the monitor properties are grayed out and monitor settings have no alternative choices.
I would like to change Mozilla Firefox to be the default browser in Win XP Pro. Currently the default is Internet Explorer. Now I know that Mozilla has a function to do this automatically, however I would like to be able to change it back again later if I want to.
I want to open .jpg files using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and I have changed the file association to do that. The problem is, when I click on the "open image for editing" button, it opens Paint. I want it to open Photoshop. There appear to be no options (or any other) menus available.
I would like to find a program to change the look/color from the boring gray background that I.E.7 comes with as the default. I could easily just go with Firefox and customize it as I usually do but IE.7 loads and runs faster on this PC. If anyone has any good suggestions for an easy to install and run program that can do this without me having to change any registry entries,
seems like with every new update done to Windows XP Home (SP2 + all current updates), I develop a new little annoyance.A few updates back, I noticed that when I change file associations to a specific program opening up my .jpgs, .tifs, and .gifs, from the default (Windows Picture & Fax Viewer), the newly-associated file does open the file, but the icons for those files remains as the default Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.(I suspect at the bottom of many of problems MAY be the installation of my Lexmark printer -- but then, it's a convenient scapegoat for everything!

I am trying to cleanup a machine running Windows 2000 (not sure what release).I've run AntiVir, Spybot, Adaware, and CWShredder, but am still experiencig problems. For example, I can't change the default home URL from 'about:blank'. AntiVir found many archieves (probably more than 30) with 'infected file' that couldn't be deleted. Most of them appeared to be .dat files, but one was a .cab file (polmx2), which I suspect is part of the problem. I'm also guessing there may be hidden files becuase I couldn't 'find' them in Windows.
I now have W XP. When I click on folders I get icons or thumbnails. I want to establish "LIST" as the default way to view files. When I click on List, it works the one time but then future clicks brings me back to the thumbnails.
I just added a "Directory List Print" to my right click options and somehow the default choice (highlighted at the top of the list) changed from "open" to "search".
Apparently the default selection governs what happens when you left click. I want to restore "open" as the default choice, but can't figure out how. Does it require a reg edit or a utility program or what? TIA
