PC Doesn't Detect CD And DVD-rom Drives
Jul 6, 2008
My problem: PC doesn't detect the CD and DVD-rom Drives. Up to a month ago they worked just fine. I scratch my head as to what I've done to make this happen. I have Registry Mechanic installed which scans on a dayly basis.

I've had this problem with this computer before, but not for a long time. It has recently resurfaced over the last week (during which the two major changes to my system were the addition of an ADSL router/connection, and the installation of XP Service Pack 2).Basically, I get the little torch (you know the one I mean, that swings left and right, searching), the first time I open "My Computer" after booting. After about 5-10 minutes, it finds my drives and everything can continue as normal. They remain found - it does not happen again until after I reboot.
A week ago it was working normally, but now it does this. What is strange is that I've made no additions of drives or changes to existing drives or their configurations, so I'm assuming it is an OS issue.Note though that it doesn't appear to be an issue affecting the whole of Windows Explorer - I can still immediately type in any folder path and go to it as normal before the drives are 'found'. It is only the main "My Computer" window which is affected

I recently was forced to do a re-install of XP to clean up a few bugs. The system has 3 hard drives, but since the reinstall, only the C: drive appears. The other two are nowhere to be found.I've tried mapping to them, but they just don't show up there as a mapping option.Anyone have any advice? When I added the extra hard drives I didn't have an available slot and did have to create a partition. I no longer have the software I had originally used though. Do I need it to make the 2 other drives visable?

I keep getting this error "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it". And if I leave my PC on to long the keyboard, mouse, and sometimes even the monitor stop working. I've tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse (which are not USB) and plugging them back in, but to no avail.

I have an old T1090 eMachine that doesn't recognize the new larger hard drives. I purchased a 200 GB PATA (IDE) drive and it shows up as a 75 GB drive using GParted and under Windows Disk Management. I expected that it would only be recognized as 137 GB, but I can't explain why it only sees 75 GB. I suspect that the BIOS needs to be updated, but I've never done this before so I was looking for a procedure and ideas for trying to find the latest BIOS online.

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.

My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Uninstalled with Revo Uninstaller

Was never able to restart after that. Normal boot shows the windows initial screen, but eventually just restarts, safe mode does the same thing whether it's with network, command line or plain safe mode. Last known good configuration does the same.Needed to use a file so decided to remove the HD and re-install to another PC. I did have access to the file in question but now I'd like to fix the problem.
The other system uses AVG. I started a scan and it detected Cekar.d (A0003977.exe, wdfmgr.exe and initially ntldr.exe), Dropper.Inor (ntdetect.hta, A0003979.hta), PSW.Generic5.ABVW (ctfmona.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.AAFI (ctfmonb.exe), PSW.Generic5.AFYK (ctfmond.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.ZWT (LotusHlp.exe) and some others but for whatever reason the scan stopped. I restarted it and now the AV still finds most of the threats it was seeing before but not Cekar.d. in the ntldr.exe file.

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

When I connect a USB flash drive I want a window to appear giving me the option to run (if there is an auto.inf file), play music (if music files), open in a Windows Explorer window, etc. This is exactly what occurs on my two Windows XP Pro machines. Nothing happens on my XP Home; I have to get to the drive through "My Computer."Is this an XP Home limitation? Or can you think of some setting I've missed? All 3 PCs have SP2 and all Microsoft critical updates. I have no reason to suspect malware on the XP Home machine, and it has nothing detected by AVG (free), Windows Defender, Ad-Aware or Spybot. The registry key NoDriveTypeAutoRun is Hex 91 on all machines. The Properties on the USB drives are the same.

Before I start, I should tell you all that I am re-posting this with all of the original correspondence at the end.I've done as described, put both drives back into their proper place on the tape and into the proper order (DVD-RW - master, DVD-ROM - slave). On a hunch, I decided to pop in a DVD-R disc, and this was detected just fine. I also put in a DVD-RW disc, but it was not detected. Seeing as how I have data I want to append to an old DVD-RW disc, is there anything left to do?

The computer I am working with is a Dell P4 desktop with 512 MB RAM, and Windows XP Home with SP2 that was purchased new in August 2005.The problem is that every time I plug a device into the system (MP4 player, USB printer, flash drive) it is not detected. If I look in Device Manager it shows up as an unknown device. If I then try to manually install the driver, it will install properly.I then decided to remove all USB Host Controllers, USB Root Hubs etc. After doing this and rebooting, all of these devices were unknown devices as well. Simply telling Windows to update the driver added the devices properly. Can anyone tell me if you have seen this before and if so, what the solution is?

I've had my PC now for almost 5 years. Everything was fine until one day my Windows XP PC just froze. I restarted it and now my DVD-ROM, CD-RW ROM are no longer detected at the System POST Screen. instead of the Drives showing, it now says the Secondary master and secondary Slave drives fails. The only thing that is detected is my Seagate Hard Drive. When I press F1 to continue I get a messagesaying "NTLDR is missing and I have to restart. I put the Windows XP Pro Disk in the drive and the same message pops up over and over. So I went to the System POST Screen, pressed delete to enter Setup. I checked the BIOS and my DVD Rom and CD-RW ROM no longer appear.

This one is for all you gamers who LOVE to LAN. It is much faster than finding an ip on the server, then typing in that longwinded address, and hoping your fingers didn't slip. Anyway, all you have to do is type the name of the computer you want to connect to in the "ip" place of any game. Your computer will automatically detect its ip, and you're ready to play! This will only work if you are playing across a private network and not across the internet.

I wanted to do is remove Vista from it and reinstall XP. I have already run DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to wipe the drive, but WinXP does not detect the drive. I have Windows XP Pro SP1. Now, I have tried the recovery CDs to ensure the drive has not been deemed unrecognisable from DBAN. It still is recognised, both in the BIOS and by the recovery software, but my XP CD doesn't even see it. What I was thinking of was slipstreaming SP2 into my CD. So I need to know two things:
1. Would doing that make any difference?
2. How do I go about slipstreaming SP2 onto my CD?

Last year I replaced the main drive after four years of use with a Western Digital drive. recently on boot up, the system can no longer detect either the primary master or the primary slave drives. It does se the secondary slave as my Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-812s. Other than the master drive going away,(hopefully not) Is there any suggestions on what may have happened? The Asus MBO is 5 years old by the way.
