After restoring a computer and backing up files, once the computer is back up and running should I have a foldercalled "My Backup 1408-08 2353" or should I have a single backup file called backup.bkf? I'm trying to help someone, and they have a folder with the files already available instead of a single backup.bkf file. He wants to restore everything to the original location before the computer restore. How can he do that with the folder he has instead of a backup.bkf file? The restore wizard is asking for a .bkf file to place everything in the original locations, and he doesn't have that.

I want to backup my PC for disaster recovery and then do an incremental backup each night to a USB hard drive. I tried Retrospect which came with the USB hard drive. I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.

basically what im looking to do is delete some old entries that the XP backup utility has created over time that i setup a while ago. Im using the "copy" option.so nothing has been appended or incremental.Im just looking to avoid deleting the setup i got, and maybe just delete a few "copy" backups so that theres not 8 gigs / 1 years worth of backups.i only need about 4 months I forgot about it.cuz i never neaded it. But it looks as if its the only way b/c i cant just delete selected backups.all or nothing?/ anyone know of a better backup utility that is simple and easy on a system BTW?

I've setup Windows 2003 fax services on a W2K3 server and shared the device. I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine. However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work. Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could
cause the problem.

I mistakenly launched XP Setup and want to know how to stop it from progressing further. I have another XP installed on another virtual disk. Rebooting from there allowed me delete the Setup files. Or so I thought ! The main XP installation however continues to try to launch Setup. Just about whatever I do, it ends in tears. My question is how do I stop XP on this disk from thinking it has to launch Setup? I dont want to reinstall XP, as that will involve a huge amount of work to recreate my environment.

I'm using XP Home and have been backing up My Documents regularly to an external hard drive with the back up utility in XP. The last time I tried to do a backup, I got an error message, "You have either run out of space or the backup (.bkf) is too large for this disk. Note: if this disk is formatted with Fat 32 , the maximum possible size for the is 4GB." My external disk is 75GB with 45GB free. It is formatted in NTFS. I did a clean up and defragged the disk and get the same error when I try to backup. Is this an indication of a problem with the external hard disk or a problem with the XP backup utility

I dropped my laptop the other day. It kept working at first, but crashed a couple of hours later. Now, when I boot-up, I get the following error message:"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32/Drivers/Ntfs.sys. You can attempt to repari this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."I've inserted the setup CD (in an external CD-Rom drive, since my laptop doesn't have its own drive). But for some reason, setup won't start, and I keep coming back to the above error message. How do I start setup?

I have just done a fresh install of XP Home on one of my computers and had quite a bit of trouble getting some drivers. Prior to doing anything else with that computer I would like to do a backup ( preferably complete ) on to a DVD(s) that will simplify an instillation if I ever end up having to reformat. If something happens down the road I would just like to install XP and then use my backup to restore it to what I have today. Any suggestions on how I should go about it and what software, free would be nice, that will allow me to do this? I hope I made myself clear as to my intentions.

On Drive C Used Space 11.2GB Free Space 137GB (NTFS)I am expecting this drive to fill up over the next 18 months. Drive D Not used at present condition raw 40GB (I got that from the properties tab - after I had tried to get Windows to format it). How do I change it from raw state to something that can be used? I also have Seagate Free Agent 250GB external backup - Not Used at present. I have some software called Spotmau Power Suite 2008 but I am not really sure how to put this whole thing together. At the moment when I start the computer (Drive C) it runs CHKDisk on drive D every
time.
1)What Im really trying to do is format Drive D. I tried to do that with Windows but it didn't work. I dint know how to do this so any advice would be helpful.
2)I would like to use the rest of the capacity for backup that is Drive D and the Seagate external drive, but Im not sure how to go about it. Can someone help please?
3)Am I right in thinking it would be better to use just the one operating system Windows XP on drive C and not put it on drive D as well?

I have had my Toshiba for 2 years and after reading a number of horror stories I decided to backup my information only to find that there is no "backup icon" in "system tools" and the microsoft website states that I should install it from my Windows cd rom! Unfortunately Circuit City didn't give me one when I bought my laptop.I have searched my programmes and have found that if I upgrade my Sonic Record Now I can get a backup function. I object to paying for something that I should have got as part of my purchase. My information consists mainly of photos, music and word documents.

I have a gateway T3302 and have used the restore cd to do a full system restopre with backup. A gateway tech told me after the restoration, which was necessary because i was missing a couple .dll wildows files, I would be able to access and restore all files previous to the restore. I now see the "My Backup" folder on my desktop. However, when I click on it, then on the documents & settings file, the user accounts I previously used are not there. How do I get my old files back.

I run a normal backup of all file each week to a external hard drive. The hard drive of the data I backup crashed and a new hard drive was installed.During the restore of the files to the new drive, however, the regularly scheduled backup began overtop of the restore process, and before the restore could complete overwrote the backup I was restoring with no files at all. Is there a temporary place that Windows XP backup utility may have saved the previous backup and is it normal (intended?) for these two operations to run simultaneously?

Recently, when I Backup C: the process completes about a third of the Backup and then Windows crashes with the much-loved Blue Screen. Restart occurs normally and chkdsk reports no problems. An investigation has shown that the problem occurs when the Backup reaches the Folder C:Documents and Settings Local Service Local Settings Temporary Internet Files Content.IE5. When the backup reaches this Folder, the backup continues normally for a few seconds and then Windows crashes. There are 4 sub-folders in ....Content.IE5 and the couple of usual files like index.dat. Looking through the files in the 4 sub-folders these seem to be "bits & pieces" of a web page relating to Belkin. I have a Belkin UPS installed and these "bits & pieces" are related to the Belkin Support Homepage. Nothing looks ominous. A couple of .css files, .gif files and some .txt. I have run AV & Spyware on the Folder and all is reported OK. The disk has a small bad sector on it that was reported and fixed (isolated) by chkdsk a long time ago. I have not experienced any other unusual behavior that would indicate that this bad sector is creating any kind of a problem.
