I have been rationalizing some files in the Windows folder to get rid of the usual crop of bugs, and now I find that some shortcuts on the desktop will not work.Is there some file for this that I might have erased by mistake?
When I try to use certain shortcuts they dont work and this error message comes up. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." Even new shortcuts have this error message.
I got moved and settled in but this computer won't allow new shortcuts that I create on the desktop to function. I just get an empty IE window with nothing there and source code is empty too so it's not getting out though the IE shortcut to yahoo does function properly but that is also the home page for this puter.Got DSl hooked up too so I haven't figured if that may have some influence on this issue. I called them, they know nothing about it so in the mean time I'm saving addies in notepad.
I have placed shortcuts to several web sites on my desktop, such as Google.com but none of them work. I have tried both double clicking and right clicking and selecting open. Nothing happens.I have checked via properties and the Internet addresses are all correct.I'm running XP Pro on a Dell laptop using a WiFi connection.
I am an older "newbie" and find some issues considerably frustrating. I am running Windows XP Pro on a Compaq laptop. I have installed all Windows XP and IE service pack updates and try to keep my McAfee virus checker and firewall up to date.I have a number of desktop shortcuts pointing to web pages that up until a few days ago worked fine with IE. When I booted up the other day, none of the shortcuts worked. In researching my problem on the Microsoft site I tumbled to this resource. So as not to waste your time, I have been through most if not all of the threads dealing with shortcuts and tried every recommended action before I posted my problem. I have also reinstalled IE from the XP disk, but the shortcuts still do not work. I have not reinstalled XP Pro.
Ok, so I had recently uninstalled Mozilla Firefox. After I did, when ever I save a shortcut of a webpage to the desktop, it wont open without asking me either to browse the internet to find a program to open it, or choose one from a list. So, I choose IE to open it, check the appropriate box to always use that program, and it still doesn't work. Even the shortcut looks white and not like it used to.
I am fond of windows shortcuts, and I've put together a number of them (CTRL-ALT-_) to streamline my work. What happens sometimes is that they stop working - why is that? I have 6 folders shortcut'ed, for example, and if I close all folders, then any shortcut will work once. If a folder that has a shortcut is open, then no other folder shortcut will work until that folder is closed. Some shortcuts work always never a problem. Others work sometimes, not other times. I have my shortcuts folder in my start/programs folder. I read once where they had to be in one of two places, and one of those was the programs folder.
I did find that if Reflection (Unix terminal screen app) was running, and a portion of the screen was highlighted with the mouse as if you were going to copy it to clipboard, that it would stop some shortcuts from running. It's a mystery to me, and I've wondered about it for so long, I thought I would finally ask the forum if they had any clues.
Am running a new laptop with XP SP2. Been working perfectly for a month. I was getting program exceptions in IE6, so I downloaded and installed Firefox. It worked OK, but I could not remove the annoying Google search bar, so I uninstalled the whole Firefox using their uninstall tool that comes with it. Now, I have remnants in the Firefox directory, it didn't do a clean uninstall. But worse- now when I click on any desktop icon (shortcut), Windows asks me what program to use! It opens a window and I select Internet Explorer and check to always use this option, but it does not "remember", so the next time I click that (or any)shortcut, it asks again.
Using Windows XP and just updated to Internet Explorer 7. All of my desktop shortcuts get hung up since the IE update. I have access to the internet and am able to go to any website though.
A friend of mine installed the Mozilla browser and I didnt like it so I uninstalled it. Anyways to make a long story short..Since then,In the address bar (ie icon), and all my internet links (internet shortcuts) show as an unassigned file type now. So for instance if I drag an http link from my browser to my desktop...it does not show as an ie link anymore (just a random file type). So when I right click my internet links and say "open with" internet explorer it works. However...when I select the check box "always open with this program" it will not change all of my internet shortcuts appear with the "IE" icon like it should
My system runs XP Prof (with SP1, but NOT, SP2 updates) and I have IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828 installed. when I click on any desktop shortcut, or even Outlook email underlined links, instead of opening an internet web page, XP gives me an error message saying "It can't find such-and-such url. Then a blank IE page opens up with no address in the address box.I have tried to repair XP by running the command: sfc/scannow, which in turn asks for the XP Prof install CD to locate any missing files, etc. Then I also tried re-installing IESP1 in hopes of fixing the problem that way. Neither of these efforts has remedied the problem.
copied the url, desktop > right click > properties > new > shortcut which brings up the new shortcut box. Paste url > next > named it b&b, clicked finish, thought I was done. and clicks on the link. It promptly opens up the printer dialogue box. That was in Firefox, our default browser. Tried it in IE, same thing. All other icons work fine. Only when I create an internet shortcut do I get this issue, and I don't even know how to begin to google for it.
How do I create network shortcuts in My Network Places? There are several computers on my network and on them, specific specific drives and specific folders that I use frequently. I'd like them to show up on all the computers, but I don't know how to create them? A second, related question, can I safely delete shortcuts that appear there that I don't use?
I'm looking for a way to create click-able Icons/shortcuts for various keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+..., etc.). [My mouse is very acessable, but my keyboard is not. I know about various on-screen keyboards; but I would prefer clickable Icons that I could put in my quick launch toolbar, for example.]
Is this possible to do within XP, or with some program I can install
my windows is acting like it has no registry i can't access system restore, reg edit, etc. or and has icons only on the shortcuts which are defult like computer network bin etc. The files eg word doc or a pdf can been seen with the appropriate program. I can work programs like normal as i am using firefox, IE ain't working but i can acces computer which is IE . This has happened once before but i can't understand why i had karpersky and adware updated both times but didn't stop it. b4 it happened alot quicker but this time it took its time.
A little background on the problem: I have a Windows XP 2002 Media Center Edition which came with McAfee security suite. I recently uninstalled it, as well as a free trial of Norton that I used once McAfee expired. After uninstalling McAfee my internet would not work. I ran system restore back to a month ago hoping that would fix the problem. Still no luck. When I put the computer into safe mode the internet works fine however.
I have a really annoying problem. My internettconnection work. But just with programs that are using port 80. I have tried mIRC, WLM, Ventrilo and so on, but they won't work.Have turned off all firewalls. (Do anyone know about a program that checks open ports on my pc?)
I'm having a bit of trouble with my internet connection at home. I have recently reinstalled Windows XP home due to corruption of files but previous to that my internet connection did not work. However, since the install i have been unable to establish a continuous connection. It starts and stops for no reason at all. I have been online and it loses connection saying there is no dial tone. A connection can be lost/found for no particular reason.
My computer has been running really slow for a few days now.. And I think i got many virus and spyware ..stuff like that .. But i cant seem to remove them =/ Heres my HJT Log

A few weeks ago, I received a blue screen of death that would not get off my computer. I had the Windows Antivirus Pro Virus that would not go away. I am going to school tomororw and needed this off my computer. So I decided to wipe the hard drive clean with the Dell CDs that came with this purchase. I downloaded Windows XP and some of the drivers. Some of the drivers that i tried to download say they downloaded but then do not come up. Broadcom440x10/100 is saying the network cable is unplugged, I have no idea what that means and internet will not work. What can I do manually to make this work?
A friend of mine recently had a trojan revealed from a Mcaffe scan. It was listed as a Downloader-RK and the file effected was CIDAEMON.EXE I have read that this file is from Microsoft for Indexing. My friend brought it to the campus internt guys and when they removed it her internet wouldn't work. So they just left it quarantined. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues, but she still wants it off.
I would like to install Internet Explorer 7 beta 2, and it does not work. So I did what they said in troubleshooting (use regmon to find a key that says "access denied" So I did that and found that HKCR/mailto is the problem. So I go into the registry and when I click on it I get an a message saying there was an error opening the key. I try change the permissions, and again I get an error message. Then I even try to delete it (I have a copy from another system to install) and again I get an error message. What can I do to fix this problem?
Two computers connected via a router , I already check if the work group is set and yes they are in the same work group by the same name but we are not sharing a printer or files, we don't have a home network set. Well the point is that sometimes I get disconnect from the internet but the other computer still works online, so I have to reboot or even start up again the computer. we already RESET the router but after that, I already get twice again disconnected need to reboot again, I am missing something that I oversee and its producing this disconnection.
