Now I get this error message..."Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Installed Windows XP Pro on a laptop and have "activated it" does this mean that if I ever have to format the machine and reinstall windows I won't be able to register the same copy again or is there a limit to the amount or activates?

computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I started up my computer yesterday it said I had a missing or corrupt file and I needed to reinstall windows. So I put my disk in and it said loading files then it said setup is starting windows and then it said loading files. It kept doing this over and over and over. So I took the CD out and tried starting the computer. I got a disk read error. This is where I am now.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem for a few months, just lived with it. In the attached screen shots, you will see I have no folder trees in any of the pop up Add, Move, or Copy pop ups in Explorer and Windows Media Player. I have no clue if this can be restored to show again. This has happened before I upgraded Media Player so it shouldnt be that. I'm thinking Windows Corruption somewhere.

View 7 Replies View RelatedLately my pc has experienced lots of different problems. It all started one day when I installed a program named xfire. It was running fine with xfire until I came home from school. Heres a list of the problems:
1. live messneger has forgot my email and runs slowly when i attempt to retype it.
2.Live messneger cannot connect at all. It just comes up with this message straight away
3. The copy of windows I'm running has been classed as an illegal copy by the microsoft website (my pc has a preinstalled installation of windows which was on when it was bought from a store).
4.Many installation programs now come up with errors about missing files.
5.I can't find any viruses with avast,ad-aware or spybot.
6. I uninstalled ie 7 which somehow allowed the normal windows messenger to work without the scripts errors I got before, but now I can't reinstall ie7. The setup always comes up with a missing file error.
I tried to access Microsoft Press Interactive Training and receive a message that a file that is required for normal operation is missing. That I should reinstall it from my cd . Im the only user on this computer and havent deleted anything related to this file. I only delete cookies and temporary files.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've reinstalled XP and some icons are missing from the "Start"/"all programs" menu. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are missing. I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. The icons do display on the "all programs" list for the other user). Any suggestions as to how to get them back on the "all programs" menu?

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having odd problems with XP on my laptop. I installed XP on a new Hard Drive a few weeks ago. I then added SP 1 and SP 2. I downloaded all the hot fixes. I installed from the Dell site as much as I could. ( The original OS was windows ME) Now the System Restore does not work. It goes through the gyrations then comes back and says "system not restored". When I click on the Help or restore settings nothing happens. I cleared the restore points last week and set a new restore point. When I tried it it worked fine. I went back to check this week and it didn't work again. Other problems with mouse installation, USB settings, and odd start up and shut down problems makes me think that there is corruption in windows. I put the Windows XP CD in to see if I could fix some of these problems. I thought maybe reinstalling basic Windows without reformatting would fix the problem. A warning came up and said the copy of windows in my machine is newer than the one on the disk and if I continued I would lose all settings. I assume it means SP1 and SP2. Can I fix this without starting all over again? Also would it be possible to partition my HD and put a new copy of XP on the partition; then transfer from the old copy?
