I got a Gateway notebook with Vista. I got a router from Belkin. I was on a fairly new desktop with XP2. I followed all the instructions and got the notebook on the internet. Then when it came to setting up security, all went bad. The notebook wouldn't "take" the phrase I picked out. OK so I unplug everything and decide to send the router back. I go back on the desktop where there were 3 users (2 limited and me admin. It won't let me log in as admin. I tried on all 3 names anyway to no avail. Everytime I clicked on ANYTHING it said "error file cannot be found invalid path" something like that. System restore I couldn't even bother with because like I said, clicking on anything just gave me error messages.

Today I tried to compress a folder of 2.68 GB, 61000 files, and 1350 subfolders, with XP's built-in compression utility. It went tediously slow, so I started to pay attention, and noticed the following behavior. Each time, when a subfolder was about to be added added to the zip file, a temporary file was copied into the main folder. When the subfolder was added to the zip, the temporary file disappeared and, coming the next subfolder, another temp. file was copied into the main folder and so on. This delete then copy the temp file was repeated also with every single file in the main folder. So, in the end, when the temp file reached ~500 MB size, it was about 25 secs of copying, then 1 sec of compressing, then 25 secs of copying, then 1 sec of compressing, etc. I was forced to cancel the operation, as it seemed to last for several more hours. Is this a bug? Is there a workaround? Or can anyone recommend a compression utility which can handle this amount of data? I tried also 7zip and PowerArchiver, but neither of them was able to compress the files. (7zip went out of memory, PowerArchiver failed to do anything.)

The Kim Kommando web site and Windows XP help both indicate that you can create a "compressed folder" by opening the "C" Drive and then clicking File, New Folder and then selecting "compressed folder". When I do this however, the only option is WinZip which allows you to creat a WinZip file which is an evaluation version. Is a WinZip file comparable to a compressed folder? When would I want to Zip or compress a file?

I have, from another PC, found memtest86 and extracted and written the ISO file to a CD and tried to reboot but it will not run the CD. I made a new CD over in case I had something wrong. No dice. BIOS are set to boot from CD, system stops and looks for bootable CD on start but will not read/start memtest

Since upgrading my computer and reinstalling Windows XP Home with all upgrades, I haven't been able to run executable downloaded files (most recently openoffice but also Google Earth Pro trial). The files download properly but when I try to run them them, I get the message "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
I'm using IE beta 7 but have tried the same process using Firefox. All Windows Updates are complete. Running Norton AV 2003 and NVidia firewall set to Antihacking only.

I have a dell dimension 3000 running windows xp sp3 that we use at our church to run a PowerPoint 2007 presentation for our songs to display on a projector. The problem is that more often than not the PowerPoint will crash and sometimes the entire system for no apparent reason. I have uninstalled word and reinstalled to no avail, it is still happening. I decided to start trouble shooting so I downloaded the memtest86 v2.11 and I am getting fails during test 2. Not sure if that means it is the ram or if it is a hardware conflict. Aside from a potential ram problem I am wondering about 3 other possibilities.
Could it be the way I have set up the video to run 2 monitors? I currently have purchased and installed a Zotac Nvidia GeForce 5200 video card which I plug the projector into and it acts as the primary monitor. The 2nd monitor a NEC AccuSync LCD5v monitor is plugged into the on-board video slot. Neither one of the settings for these video cards seem to recognize that I have two monitors plugged in, so not sure if that is the source of the crashes? If I should hook them up differently or what
Within the PowerPoint itself is over 300 hyper links (one for each song plus one to end the song and return to main PowerPoint) I run it in presenter mode. Also have a macro on one slide so it can function as a white board. Main PowerPoint has 6 slides.

A DFI NForce3 motherboard. He went to the DFI site and downloaded the bios upgrade using the winflash software. The system then started running memtest86+ It went through a dozen passes -- no errors -- and now he can't get it to stop. He's tried pushing escape but its turning the test back on. He's tried the other tabs on memtest86+ I can't remember the names and memtest86+ restarts but he can't get back to Windows. How can he turn the darn thing off I'm not computer literate, but I did a little checking and I came across something that said to take memtest86+ out of the floppy drive or reset the boot order. His memtest86+ is not on a floppy or cd and he can't get the bios to come up to reset a boot order

When I try to download a file from the Internet, I get a box sasying "Run/Open", "Save", and "Cancel" as always. When I click on either of the first two options, however, the box simply clicks and unclicks with no actions following it. Almost as if you click "Post" in a forum, but you hold the click on it and move the cursor elsewhere, stopping the system from performing that action. On some days, I can get my system to download about 5 files before I can no longer click "Save" or "Open".

I run Firefox 3.0.3 under Windows XP SP2 Home.
I have downloaded, a new batch of .jpg files from a trustworthy site that I have been using without any problem for a couple of years. With the latest batch of files I find that whenever I try to open any one with PaintShop Pro, I get an Open File - Security Warning asking me if I really want to open it from an unknown publisher.
If I check the file's properties, I find it is blocked. I can unblock each file individually, either by changing the property or by checking an option on the Security Warning.
I can see no reason for this happening suddenly. I have found various possible solutions proposed (but for slightly different environments or file-types), but they do not work for me. Is there any really proven solution for either preventing the blocking in the first place or removing the block en block?

I have a Dell C521, havind Windows XP PRO installed on it. I'm having problems downloading and opening lots of files for Paint Shop Pro 7. These are some messages I get for various reasons. 'It does not look like your system is configured to properly view this file. You can continue but the file you are trying to view may look "wrong". For version PSP 7, you need MSVCRT10.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL loaded in both Windows and Windows/Systems Directories. This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel. Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to DLL Cache. Insert your Windows XP Proffesional Service Pack 2 CD now.

saying the file is blocked and I can unblock by clicking etc.
I don't know where this block is coming from or what limitations it is
posing. I want to unblock all of them at one time.

When online, all downloaded files I save take almost exactly 30 seconds to save to their location. Download speed is normal, the files are already downloaded. The only problem is the delay in saving. This happened all of a sudden. No new programs were added or settings changed. File size has no bearing - 2KB takes the same time to save as 200KB. Same delay for saving photos, html pages & images saved by a screen capture program.
Offline all graphics capabilities & copying is normal. System is clean, no virus, spyware etc.
HD is de-fragged, page file is de-fragged, all temp files emptied. Has happened before & a re-installation of XP fixes it, but I'd like to find out what's causing it?

I have Windows XP. When I download a file (WP, pdf, etc.), and it asks me to open or save it, it will only let me save it. If I try to open it, it seems to download, but then the relevant application never opens, and I get a message that I may not have the appropriate permission. So I have to save it, then open the application myself, then open the saved file.

I'm in the middle of setting a backup solution for my HDD on WindowsXP PC. I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.

was under ther understanding that System Restore only effected the system

Is this not correct?

I downloaded some computer game files and now I am sorry and want to delete them but can't find the files that support them. The shortcut icons appear only on the fifth line of the Mozilla and I.E. browzer home pages. The address line shows the files at http://retrogamer.iwon.com/home.jhtml?tbdd=9197. The files do not appear under C: anywhere and the search function and Control Panel add/remove can't locate them either.

I'm working on a Compaq desktop system and have run into something that has me stumped. The system is XP Home-SP2 with all patches, etc .It's my understanding that ActiveX controls such as Shockwave, Java, QuickTime, Ewido, etc show up in c:windowsdownloaded program files. (That's also where they appear on my HP laptop, and there's a status column that shows "installed") On the desktop system however, there are no activex controls in c:windowsdownloaded program files.....and no "status" column. Instead, there's a folder called "Conflict.1" and a bunch of *.dll and *.inf files. The desktop does have Shockwave, Ewido, Java, etc. installed though.
The system belongs to a friend and when I received the desktop, there was no AV or anti-malware software on it. It had a host of both; however, I have cleaned it.
Does this seem odd to anyone but me? Any ideas?
Thanks!
