Maxtor External 250GB Not Working

I've had a Maxtor External Hard Drive 250GB for about 2 and half months now, and its been working pretty well until now. The small light will come on only if the plug in the port on the EHD is being held in the right position, and the 2 plugs in the computer ports are fine. The light is on, but the computer is not reading it. It also makes a small beeping noise as the light goes on and off. Is it possible to fix, or at least get files off?

I have video saved on a Maxtor 80GB external drive that is formated in fat32, from a Windows ME system. I need to move the video info to a newer PC w XP. I have read the forum comments on how to convert from fat 32 to NTFS. However when I connect the Maxtor firewire the PC will NOT RECOGNIZE the drive. Until recongized I can't convert. I have other larger external drives that are in NTFS and are recongized immediately.

My Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive. Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive. Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive. Can get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive? When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen. I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.

Microsoft did an upgrade to my desktop automatically, called a service pack 3, after which my Maxtor 3200 external hard drive stopped being recognized by my Windows XP system. A code 10 error appeared every time I tried to access through my device manager, and I cannot find a driver to operate this hard drive, I will many songs and pictures if I cannot access this external hard drive. I went on the Maxtor site and they said, it is an internal driver that operates off of my system, what can I do to access the data on this external hard drive.

I have two computers (a PC and a Mac) and a Maxtor One Touch External Hard disk 250 GB. I would like to back up these two machines using a single external hard disk. So I have partitioned the hard disk into two and have NTFS and FAT32 as the file systems. The NTFS partition is around 163 GB and the FAT32 is around 75GB. I could successfully back up the PC into the NTFS part but have problems with the Mac.
When the hard disk is mounted on to the Mac, both the partitions appear on the desktop. The Mac OS is 10.3 and it identifies both partition correctly. It recognises the NTFS part as readonly and FAT32 part as "readable and writable". But when I tried to backup for the first time there was an error saying "insert a new disk". I tried to overwrite the contents of the FAT32 part as I didn’t need them any longer hence asked to proceed with the backup. The Mac started erasing. I thought it was erasing the files previously present in the FAT32 part but it continued erasing for some time and finally erased the FAT32 file system itself. So the icon representing the FAT32 part of the partition of the external hard disk disappeared from the Mac’s desktop......

I have a Computer which operates on XP Service Pack 2 and has a Maxtor 1TB external Hard Drive hooked up. We do a lot of Video Editing (programs such as DV Storm, Vegas etc.) and up until yesterday the external came up as Local Disk E, but it became unplugged whilst the Editing programs were running.It now it comes up as Local Disk (I) but the problem is the Edit programs doesn't recognise any of the files (avi., mpg etc.) that are on the drive (comes up as 'invalid path'), and nor does it show them in their previous format.

About 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source.When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer. In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized. I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted. Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

After working for sometime with Maxtor One Touch II external drive, I have experienced the following problem: If the computer is left for some period of inactivity, for 1-2 or more hours (the light on the drive is on and not blinking) I cannot access the drive and the OS message is "One touch is not responding". The only remedy is to restart the computer. My System consists of: WindowsXP SP2 and 512 MB Ram The Maxtor OneTouch II drive is connected via a firewire inlet of the computer, the file system being NTFS. The drive is partitioned unto 2 logical drives (~150 GB each)

I have a Sony VGN-T1XP Vaio laptop with an Intel Pentium M Processor running XP Pro SP2. For some reason the two USB ports have stopped working and no USB devices are recognised. I have looked at the device manager under USB controllers and there are four USB controllers listed which are as follows: Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 enhanced host controller 24CDIntel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C2Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C4Intel 82801DB/DBM USB universal host controller 24C7 Underneath those are four USB root hubs.
I have previously used a USB card reader and external hard drive on both ports without any problems but now when I connect any device nothing at all happens.

My hard disc is a Samsung 250Gb disc and it is recognised in the BIOS. As soon as I attempt to install Windows XP, when formatting, it only recognises 127Gb. I installed it anyway and ran some Windows updates from the MS site, thinking this might fix the problem. It didn't. I also accessed the Disc Management window (saw this advice in one of your threads) to no avail: it says that this device is working properly, although only showing 127Gb. If this is important, my CPU is an Adlon 64 Venice 3000+.

I have recently re-installed XP onto a 250GB hdd but it is only seeing 127gb drive. I have service pk1 and service pk2 installed and the bios on the system is seeing the 250gb drive.

Ongoing USB problem. WinXP Pro system new Dell Vostro. Finally able to split the drive to 2 partitions. When 1st installing the drive the windows found new hardware and assigned letters. Worked great. At end of day i logged off the Vostro unit and turned off the USB drive. Next morning at sign on the USB drive was not functional until several connect and disconnect attempts. The device would show in the hardware manager and sometimes have yellow triangle and other times would appear as this device is working properly but no assigned letters.

have a duel boot system with a legacy windows 2000 installation and a Windows XP Proffessional(SP2),I am able to access a 250GB second drive thru the windows 2000 installation but not with the XP.The Boot drive is 80Gb WD drive, and usually runs with another 80Gb WD drive. All drives are NTFS.I have SP2 installed with XP and understooed that access to large hard drives was set to default with the install of SP1.I have tryed to use the support pages at M$ which state that I need atapi.sys drivers (non existant in my XP), But the fix which they give won't install due to me having SP2 already.I think i just need to install latest atapi drivers and change the registry to enable large hard drives but i'm perplexed as to why they arn't already there.

I bought the drive came home and installed in on a PC with XP SP_2.Stated the machine and it took forever to load up windows ( not normally like this )Went to start to transfer files over , and no disc to be found anywhere (?)Start/MyPc/properties/hardwareTab/device manager/ and there is nothing to indicate there is a USB hd connected to my machine .right click mypc/manage/discManagement and still no disc shows up in the menu .(?)restart the PC .NOW for the first time ever my pc takes forever to shut down and restart .when the pc restarts repeat the above and still no disc to be found anywhere .while plugged in and connected to the machine i unplug the power to the drive and plug it back in , now outta nowhere XP says it has found a new Seagate drive . YAY right , wrong. i restart my machine and the slow shutDown and restart is still happening (thumbs down )when the pc restarts ( finally ) i check the shortCut i made for the HD on my desktop , no hd icon just a grey box with a Question mark . so i unplug and plug the power cable as i did before and bang there it is again ( the hd).

I have recently fitted a Hitachi Deskstar 250gb Hard drive(model:HDS722525VLAT80) to my computer.After Re-instaling windows (xp) the drive was showing as 125gb.I have been told this is because windows xp will only support 125gb without service pack 2.I have now downloaded SP2. but it still shows as 125gb.

These two folders appeared some time back on my 250GB internal storage drive. The names of the folder are 15 characters long and are alphanumeric and have one subfolder in each named i386. And are ?0? in size. I first tried shift delete, ?Can?t remove access denied? I download and tried Erase. First with 1 pass, nothing? Not even an error! I went all out and did the Gutmann, 35 passes. Nothing and no error! The file just remains. For convenient sake I renamed the main folder to 1 and 2 and booted into the recovery consol and tried to delete it from there. Same thing! ?Can?t remove access denied? What the!!

My daughter and I installed her new 250 GB hd yesterday and installed XP; everything seems fine except the computer says 230 free of 232 GB, and it is a 250. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4300, 1.7 Mhz Intel Pentium 4, 700 RAM (512 + 254?).

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5000 with Vista home on it and it works OK, but I bought a larger HDD and I thought that I would put Windows XP PRO on it, I went from a Hitachi 160GB 2.5" SATA drive to a 250GB drive, same Manufacturer, the only difference in the drives is the original was a SATA 1.50 and the new drive is a 3.0, BIOS see's the drive and the XP disk does al the usual stuff, then it asks if you want to Install windows on it, so I click OK and then it says the windows cannot detect any HDD and aborts the installation, I know that the 2 SATA's are compatible and the only draw back is that the 3.0 may operate in the 1.5 mode in the worse case scenario, but windows doesn't see the drive at all.

I'm an unhappy owner of a Maxtor 160Gb hard drive (6L160P0). I'm unhappy because I'm not able to make it use the UltraDMA mode, but only the slow PIO4 mode. I have WinXP Pro sp2.My motherboard is an Asus A7A266 with Alimagik1 chipset (North bridge Ali M1647, South bridge Ali M1535D+) with the latest BIOS (1013 beta).I also have a Samsung 40Gb hard disk that works perfectly in UDMA5.I tried uninstalling and reinstalling IDE channels from device manager,but I still have PIO4.I checked BIOS, setting either "Auto" or "Manual" in HD configuration (manual udma6, udma5 etc...). No way.I downloaded Ali/Uli integrated drivers v2.096, then I enabled mini-IDE driver (v1.5.10) modifying the "install.ini" file and installed it. No success, hd still uses PIO.Now in device manager under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers I have "Ali M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller".I tried forcing UDMA changing "MasterDeviceTimingModeAllowed".

I installed the patch last night on my windows xp service pack one machine. Plugging in the drive causes the icon to appear in the system tray, but there is no drive letter assigned to the drive and going in to explorer shows the drive "locked".

I ahve a hp pavilion 521n upgraded from maxtor 80g hd to western digital 150g hd upgraded from 384g to 1g of ram(system limit)everest shows that i have 1 stick of 512 ram and 1 stick of 128pc wizard says the same
i right click on my computer and it says i have the full 1g of ram.i ran the prime95 "torture test" and it immediately showed errors and said they were hardware related.

I am having an issue with a Maxtor Model Number 92739U6 hard drive. I have just finished formatting and installing windows xp home edition. Everything was going ok until I restarted the computer. First right after I restarted the computer I got an error message A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL+ALT+Del. I was unsure what caused this error message so I started to research this issue on Maxtor?s website and they advised me to use fdisk /mbr to repair the error. I did that and restarted the computer. Same Error?. The thing I can?t figure out is why I am able to boot right to windows using a boot disk.

I just installed a new hard drive then I installed windows XP SP2 on the disk and the computer keeps rebooting and I'm getting a blue screen c000221 unknown hard error. Then I re-install windows 2000 it works Ok. Then I installed windows XP SP1 it work OK, then I installed the SP2 and the computer started to reboot again. I used drive jujitsu and it was OK. So what is the issue with SP2 and the Maxtor drive anyone knows or has seeing this issue?
