I was messing around with Ubuntu Linux and it installed GRUB on the master boot record and I want it gone. I was told to type 'fdisk /mbr' in MSDOS mode to get rid of GRUB. I dont know how do get into MSDOS mode.. command prompt doesnt work.
View 12 RepliesI have a hard drive from an old computer (Win 2000 Pro) that I wanted to piggy back on my new computer.Only thing is it wont recognize it since it shows it as a Master Boot Record drive.I even tried putting it in an external hard drive enclosure with a USB. System saw it and loaded it properly, but it is not available in Windows Explorer.Its just plain "not there"!

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway GT5032, Athlon X2 4200+ w/ 1GB RAM, 80GB (system) & 250GB HDs running WinXP MCE 2005. I was using the PC to open Nero VisionExpress while I was opening an edited DVR-MS (~1GB) movie when the movie became very choppy till it froze (Nero took a while to load as well). After waiting several minutes I end tasked the movie and continued to have a slow response time from the PC. It returned to normal speed, then I would try opening the movie (using Windows Media Player) and the movie was still choppy till it stalled. I eventually restarted the PC...I noticed that it took a LONG time to boot WinXP and would ''stall'' every 5 seconds for about 2 seconds. During bootup it reported that an error was in C:Windowssystem32Rasapi32.dll, but it did boot into Windows and all.
I rebooted in hopes of fixing the problem, but then the PC had trouble recognizing drives. After being shut off for about 10 minutes, the BIOS recognizes all drives again but reports an MBR error on boot up and will not even load Windows. I'm assuming that MBR is the Master Boot Record...and that scares me a lot. I am wandering if there is any easy way to repair this problem. And also if the MBR is indeed damaged, could it also have harmed my other files on the HD (such as Rasapi32.dll)? What is the function of Rasapi32.dll. I don't suspect a virus as I was not running any suspicious files lately.
I booted up my computer and got an error message saying "STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):System RootSystem32ConfigDEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable" I tried rebooting in safe mode, to no avail. Now I can't even get it to come back to the other "STOP" error screen because every time I boot up my computer a window pops up labeled "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" and states The Dell system recovery tool has detected an unsupported change in your master boot record. The tool cannot run at this time."
First I'll describe what I intended to do, followed by me explaining my problems, and ended with my actual question.Intentions:Fixing my Master boot record file with a FIXMBR and removing my Ubuntu installation due to lack of usage, amongst things.
Merging the old Linux partitions space with one of my current NTFS partitions for the extra space (all above-mentioned partitions are on the same HDD, for the record). Would've done this with Partition Magic.
Im not actually gonna do it, but I have a Windows 95 install CD Rom and I put it in my computer (XP operating system). It said something like "run with MS DOS" which I tried using the "command prompt" thingie and it did NOT work. How would I go about running MS DOS to get 95 to install [if i choose to]?

I would like to know if this can be done in win xp environment. say I have a folder, A, of pictures only and they all have file extensions jpg eg abc.jpg, xyz.jpg. say I have a second folder, B, which contains all the files of A(if you ignore extensions) and more(but all are pictures.) But all the files in B has extensions NEF instead of jpg eg abc.NEF, efg.NEF, xyz.NEF. My idea is to extract all the files from B that has the same the name as A(ignoring extensions) and either move or copy to a separate folder ie if A contains abc.jpg, xyz.jpg then abc.NEF and xyz.NEF will be extracted and moved/copied to a new folder. I'm not sure where to start. is there a program out there that can do this? or there's a special command to type at the command prompt?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.
All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.
A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do
pc wont boot. its a sata hard disk which is detected upon boot. however i dont even get the windows splash screen. in the bios - the hd doesnt show up. safe mode doesnt work neither does last known good settings. i put the xp disk in and attempted to do an (install followed by a repair ) rather than system console. nothing works because the xp disk claims no hard drive exists. is it cos its serial ata. im not exactly sure if its got raid setup etc although i do possibly remeber a viaraidtool popup that might have come up on the odd times ive been over and used my dads pc to educate him on eBay. :-) anybody got an idea. sorry i dont have specs.

It always starts with (c:documents and settingsmark>) is this how it is supposed to start out.Every time I type a command it never works. I want to type this- tasklist /m /fi "IMAGENAME eq rundll32.exe" >C:undll32.txt because my pc would not let me shut down kept saying rundll32.exe was not responding. Earlier I clicked on windows card space because I had not seen it before to see what it was and it started the service,when I clicked on it again it said it was to busy to answer my request.I never heard of such! It uses rundll32.exe, I think.I finally hit "end now" and rebooted, now I got 2 rundll32.exe's.I found that command on Ramishes site under "whats the suspicious Rundll32.exe" http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rundll32.htm Anyway I thought cmd should start with "c:" and thats it?

It's like a quick flash. Now, when I open the prompt by itself by going to it in "Start---All Programs---Accessories---Command Prompt, it works fine. But I can't do hardly anything from there.

In Win XP Command Prompt is Hidden...Cannot Retrive Command Prompt. I tried to get rid of Win XP Pro on partition 2, which it looks like I did. Now I have partition 1 and it has Windows Home Edition on it. I think maybe I have done something incorrectly. Shouldn't this drive c be one big drive now? I just see drive c, which doesn't really have that much room on it. Do I have to format the drive and start all over? I don't understand. I have instructions on how to edit boot.ini, but when I followed the instructions, the command prompt doesn't recognize bootcfg /?, saying there is no such file. If I have to format and start all over, I will.
