I have a hard drive from an old computer (Win 2000 Pro) that I wanted to piggy back on my new computer.Only thing is it wont recognize it since it shows it as a Master Boot Record drive.I even tried putting it in an external hard drive enclosure with a USB. System saw it and loaded it properly, but it is not available in Windows Explorer.Its just plain "not there"!
View 10 RepliesI have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux. But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

I have a Gateway GT5032, Athlon X2 4200+ w/ 1GB RAM, 80GB (system) & 250GB HDs running WinXP MCE 2005. I was using the PC to open Nero VisionExpress while I was opening an edited DVR-MS (~1GB) movie when the movie became very choppy till it froze (Nero took a while to load as well). After waiting several minutes I end tasked the movie and continued to have a slow response time from the PC. It returned to normal speed, then I would try opening the movie (using Windows Media Player) and the movie was still choppy till it stalled. I eventually restarted the PC...I noticed that it took a LONG time to boot WinXP and would ''stall'' every 5 seconds for about 2 seconds. During bootup it reported that an error was in C:Windowssystem32Rasapi32.dll, but it did boot into Windows and all.
I rebooted in hopes of fixing the problem, but then the PC had trouble recognizing drives. After being shut off for about 10 minutes, the BIOS recognizes all drives again but reports an MBR error on boot up and will not even load Windows. I'm assuming that MBR is the Master Boot Record...and that scares me a lot. I am wandering if there is any easy way to repair this problem. And also if the MBR is indeed damaged, could it also have harmed my other files on the HD (such as Rasapi32.dll)? What is the function of Rasapi32.dll. I don't suspect a virus as I was not running any suspicious files lately.
I was messing around with Ubuntu Linux and it installed GRUB on the master boot record and I want it gone. I was told to type 'fdisk /mbr' in MSDOS mode to get rid of GRUB. I dont know how do get into MSDOS mode.. command prompt doesnt work.

It is corrupt, absent, or not writable" I tried rebooting in safe mode, to no avail. Now I can't even get it to come back to the other "STOP" error screen because every time I boot up my computer a window pops up labeled "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" and states The Dell system recovery tool has detected an unsupported change in your master boot record. The tool cannot run at this time."
First I'll describe what I intended to do, followed by me explaining my problems, and ended with my actual question.Intentions:Fixing my Master boot record file with a FIXMBR and removing my Ubuntu installation due to lack of usage, amongst things.
Merging the old Linux partitions space with one of my current NTFS partitions for the extra space (all above-mentioned partitions are on the same HDD, for the record). Would've done this with Partition Magic.

My plan now was to change the 300G drive to the Master drive. I reformatted, booted from my XP disc & installed the OS on the "new" 300G drive. Then I switched the jumper & cable so it was in the master position.and nothing.
It starts up, tells me to hit F2 for setup or F1 to continue. When I hit F1, it goes to a blank screen with flashing cursor, but no command line
I have an HP Media Center and an IOMEAGA 1Tb NAS. The Media Center software will only record to physical hard drives on the media center. This means any hard drive or USB hard drive. I am looking for software that will emulate this and will point to a network drive this way I can record directly to my NAS.

I got a call tonight from him saying he really screwed up and doesn't know what to do.
I had to follow his thinking over the phone so I hope I get this all correct.
He had trouble loading the drivers for his HP printer. He would get an error saying that a C: empHP_WebRelease folder was missing. He did manage to figure out that for some reason when I installed XP it called the Boot drive "I" instead of "C"
If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

View 14 Replies View RelatedOk i made an Xp bootable CD. I did this 2 times and I followed all the instructions, burned it in nero as CDROM (boot) with all the correct settings. I downloaded the XP boot record (bin file) and I used that as the boot image.However, when I use this on the computer I am tryikng to install it on, it says "searching for Master boot record on CD.." for about 15 seconds on startup and then just boots from the existing hard drive OS because aparently it can't find the boot record.The cds work fine on my laptop, if i put it in and run it after my laptop is already started up, the windows xp menu for installationcomes up fine.never had this happen before so i don't know what the problem is.. i changed the boot priority so it is trying to bootfrom the cd rom, but just cant.

View 6 Replies View Relatedmy PC has 2 disks it was setup with a boot manager on disk1 disk1 has linux. disk2 is my Win XP disk. my question is can I safely write a boot block on disk2 and not loose data like the XP CD warns you about? I'm not using Linux on disk1 anymore, but I need the boot manager to boot XP on disk2. so the question is how safe is it to use the XP CD and fix/create a boot record on disk2? Are there any issues? I really don't want to restore because of the software is already working..

I cannot seem to get the mobo to recognize the SATA which is plugged into the primary IDE slot via a Silicon Graphics 680 adapter board. This of course fouls up my ability to boot from a CDROM drive as my secondary IDE port is supporting the original WD IDE drive and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA drive. At one point I was able to boot from either the primary master or the 2nd master. I have fiddled with XXclone and cannot seem to get the machine to recognize the Sata drive any more.
I have an 160 Gb wD hardrive set to master on my Asus P4p800e deluxe mother.....I would like to know If I could add an extra hardrive sata as a slave...The reason for this is becuase I want to keep diffrent files in here...But I don' know id this could be done...Do I need to dual Boot and install the same Operating system in the Sata...I know my motherboard supports sata Ide and Raid disks...and if its not possible ...Can you tell me another way to add a second drive without dual booting,...I just want my drive to appear in my computer so I could save different files
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was messing with partitioning my hard drive. Nothing challenging, but it seemed to work. But then partition magic said the entire drive was "BAD" and had no partitions, knowing full well it had four.
My computer still worked. Then it would get to where it was restarting on its own for no reason. Then sometimes the bios recognized the master and the slave drive and loaded, but most of the time it didn't recognize either, and wouldn't load. Sometimes it just recognized one drive.
I had thought maybe the MBR was messed up. But then why wouldn't the bios recognize the drives every time. And if one drive was messed up, that wouldn't effect the bios would it

700Mb RAM20GB HDD256MB Graphics CardDVD Rom Not sure what the motherboard is, my HDD has the 'old' IDE connections.Anyway, everything has been running fine, so I decided to install a DVD RW unit instead of my CD/DVD unit.
That's when my problems started.PC now won't boot, asks me to install the boot device or something like that and when I check the BIOS, it says that the Pri / Sec units not installed. Even when I run the auto detection it still says the same thing. I've tried re-installing the old CD/DVD unit but it keeps coming up with the same message.
My Desktop screen seems to be booting twice. I want to check and see if that is true and if any other system programs are booting twice during initial bootup. How do I access the Master Boot List, or System Startup Menu, whatever you may call the list the OS uses to Start the system up when it boots.
A friend of mine's computer has three hard drives. The one designated as her C drive is an 8gb thing. She has a 40gb drive along with another 30gb one. In her cmos setup I couldn't get it to boot with a drive besides that which was designated C So can I just copy and paste all the stuff in her C drive into another drive but how would I get windows to boot off of that drive instead??? But for some reason, the CD is not booting up and my computer keeps saying "Operating System Not Found." I can't find anything in the bios where this would be switchable.

I have two HDs installed on my comp. The master (C drive) is running WinXP home edition. The slave (E drive) was taken from my old comp which ran under Win ME (which should still be installed on it). I need to boot up with ME as a "work around" to print some files using a RIP program that is not supported by XP.Is it possible to boot from the slave HD? I looked under the setup options accessed by hitting f12 key during start up, and the "E" drive did not show up on the list of drives. Floppy, Cd drives, and a USB external drive did show up. I also tried looking under a menu accessed by hitting the f2 key...and a second hard drive showed up in that menu, but the options I had available were "off" (the setting I found it set at) or "auto", I changed it to "auto" and tried to reboot but it said "no loader_"

It was too small for all my music and apps so I installed a second drive which I then started using for files.So Drive 1 was 40 gb and Drive 2 was 80GB..I was running out of space again so I used a drive cloner to move the 40 GB drive to a 200GB Drive.Disk Management shows different according to it Drive 0 is the 80gb drive and is assigned a letter of D and Drive 1 is the 200GB drive assigned a letter of C.Both C and D have a Windows directory off of and a Program Files but the Program Files on C has more entries than the one on D.
