View 10 Replies View Relatedwould any one know how i can restore the SEARCH function on my pc? i think my problem started when i uninstalled software, even though the uninstall went smoothly and without any obvious problems. whenever i click on START/SEARCH i get a message stating: "a file required to run SEARCH COMPANION cannot be found. you may need to run setup". i get the same error message when trying to search inside a folder.i'm running XP, and only have a recovery cd for WINDOWS, so if part of the remedy requires the full WINDOWS OS software, i'm out of luck.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt has been some time now the find button on the start list has disappeared...The search option in the folder view of the windows explorer disappeared too and the F3 key has no effect whatsoever (except when I use it inside Firefox.then it starts the firefox page search feature). This "may" have happened some time ago when I tried the "Windows desktop search" program that I didn't like and uninstalled later?)Anyway here I am using Google desktop which is too memory hungry (its database occupies 4GB on my C drive).I tried googling the internet and found 2 or 3 solutions that failed with me .Is there a solution?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP.My husband was on the computer and looking at something in google. When he was done and went back to our home page our windows search box was gone from our toolbar and in place of it at the top of the screen is a google search box which we don't like. I am computer illiterate when it comes to knowing what to do to get it back. This is the first time we have ever lost our search box.
View 12 Replies View Relatedso, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).
I'm having a somewhat-recurring issue wherein I'll play a PopCap or SOE Game and be interrupted by the dreaded BSOD. When I go into my event viewer and look at the only red-exclamation-point item I can, I see the following (two items, both appear in the log at exactly the same time. In this case, the game was Free Realms. As you'll note from the error, it appears to be related to the Windows Search Service. I've attached the minidump to this link, for those of you uber-XP-experts that can understand it. Also, I keep this PC maintained pretty well. I run anti-malware software on a regular basis, use ClamWin for my antivirus, and avoid iffy-websites.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently got the 'blue screen' on my IBM NetVista. various tech people and was told that 1.) my hard drive was gone; 2.) a bad virus had taken over the 'puter; and various other things. Being stubborn Scots-Irish, I decided to see what I could do before I gave up.
Started computer again, tapping the F8 key while it was booting up......ran all the system diagnostic tests and passed them, so I knew it wasn't the hard drive. Finally got it to boot back up, but of course, had lost all my data; ran all my recover info and got everything back except my 'Record Now' feature, which allows me to make data discs, copy existing discs, It should have been on one of the original discs that came with the computer, but I can't find it.
Problem is, I want to save all my documents, games, addresses and such as back-up. How can I do that without my Record Now feature?
Is there a way to find that specific program on my Recovery discs and install lit to make my back-up copies? I haven't tried to copy to the floppy discs because it takes so many of them.
I was cleaning up my Dell 150D 1.33 mghz Desk top computer with windows XP Home edition. As I logged back on I click on User icon and the screen turns blue and never progresses any further. When I use ALT-CTRL=DELETE, it shows task manager running and continues to cycle in Kbs used. Can I restart and use set up F-1 to correct.

1.I have a dell digital jukebox mp3 player that allows for storage of data or music. I tried to copy a 600mb file from the mp3 player onto my hard drive. I had a little over 600 mb of space left on my hard drive (a total storage capacity of 6GB). It said i had run out of space. So i deleted some files, move some things around and i had 1.1 GB of space free for this transfer. i tried again and this time again the message i got was not enough space on drive c:/. So i cancelled out and checked to see what i had on my hard drive, 500mb free!!!?? So i have lost hard drive space and not gain a file...So i investigated and found that i have 1.81 GB of data on c: documents settingsuser. but once i get into user, i have 6 folders none of which display nearly that much data. They are, favorites, start menu, cookies, desktop, my documents, and a file named ntuser. the ntuser file is 1mb, and my desktop has 700 or so mb on it. So my question is how can i get back this lost hd space,
2.Blue screen. Im on xp pro sp1, i use adaware, registry mechanic, and im generally tidy with my windows; note, reinstalling windows did not solve this. I never used to have this issue, but lately when i go to open or close certain programs i jump to blue screen. it references trixdp.dll i think it was, and then "begin physical dump of memory" i must reboot at this point. I use VLC media player, and exiting this program mandates a blue screen. Just now i exited mozilla browser and this was the first time i got blue screen from this program.
Lately I have had appplications freeze up temporarily for no apparent reason. This happens in WordPerfect, Word, and in my webmail system w/ Comcst and IE. Everything is un-responsive for as much as a minute with "beeps" when I try to get the window to respond by clicking in it or on the button in the system tray.
I wait it out and it usualy clears. But this is not an automatic backup in the word processing apps (which only takes a heartbeat to do). It's almost as if some thing on the machine is recording what I am doing... Once yesterday, I had to shut it down and re-boot, but that's been rare.
Now, I have lots of anti-spyware and other protective stuff: spybot S&D; Spyware Blaster; Webroot; Processguard; and AVI Antivirus. I've scanned and scanned, but found nothing but a few cookies most of which I get rid of.
Is there a way to create Desktop wallpaper out of words using WinXP? I know how to turn an image into wallpaper.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI boot up my PC it gets to a point when a rectangular box with a blue band at the top appears. Inside the blue band there is the words .NET Framework Initialization Error Inside the box there is a red blob with an X in it and the words :WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFramework|v2.0.50727mscorwks.dll could not be loaded There is then an OK button which when I press it the PC loads properly. The machine seems to run OK. I am satisfied that I have no viruses or spyware. I am running XP Home SP2 I do not have a Windows disc as my PC came with Windows installed. I have made recovery disks and reinserted them but this has not made any difference.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to remove and/or edit the words: Windows XP Home Edition from the left side of the Classic Start menu? I did it with Windows 98. If I remember correctly, I had to create a new BMP file of certain dimensions, and use Adobe Photoshop to create a layer of vertical text, give the new file the same name as the old one, change the extension for the old file, and put the new one in the same location. Is the method for the Classic Start menu in Windows XP the same.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not exactly sure what is causing this issue so I don't exactly know where to put it. If one of the staff here has a better suggestion and can move it there I would be greatly appreciative. Now on to my problem.I have a computer here that randomly seems to lock up. What I mean by that is, you can be typing an e-mail and the words stop displaying, a few seconds later the screen will flash and your text will start filling in (it isn't suddenly there, you can actually watch it fill in the letters). Nothing moves on the screen at all until the flash.
The machine itself is a fairly robust machine (Dell Precision WorkStation T3400 with E7300, 2.66, 3MB Wolfdale Processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro NVS290 graphics card
