I told him that for me to e-mail him an 8x10 of this photo wasn't possible because the file was too large (33mb).Is there a way to compress a file of this size and e-amil it to him?

He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:

In Unix there is a "dd" command that will enable the user to split up a large text file into smaller segments. I am on XP and have a 600Mb text file and I want to chop it up in two pieces so I can read it more easily. How can I do this, preferrably from a command line?

There is a different amount of free space now while experiencing the problem than there was when I had the problem 6 months ago. The hard drive is a secondary hard drive used for data storage.

This file I believe is of some 2.5GB and my download speed is approx. 2mb. So when trying to download this file, it indicates that will take approx. 25hrs to complete. Is there anyway of capturing what's downloaded in a temp file and then pick up again to continue the download in number of sessions till completion of the full download. At present if I shut the page or turn PC off, it starts the download again from scratch when restarting.
I keep getting error message that the attachment I send in email is too large and must show how be broken down into smaller pieces.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased Visual Studio 6.0 and want to download a 132MB file with samples of the several venues comprising the Studio. Yesterday, I spent 15 hours at my machine trying to download this large file (56k Modem) and at 131+MB, my connection to my ISP broke and I lost it. I have tried several times before and after this crushing loss and have had similar problems.
Is there any software or other means to "restart" when a downloading process has been broken off and continue the download? That seems possible, say, when downloading Microsoft service packs and upgrades.but can I do it too?
I have 4 year old Dell E1505 with XP Pro.I have no clue what I was doing that propagated this large file(38.06 GB) called EVREM. It only appears when I do a defragment with various defragmenters. It's the only file remaining that won't defragement. I do not have anyway to access it, isolate it, or find where it is within my laptop. My various anti-spyware and security software does not recognize it as harmful. It's slowing down my laptop. There is very little information available about this problem on the net. Your site has had a few posters with similar circumstances with EVREM.
View 6 Replies View RelatedToday I copied a large folder containing multiple Access databases, Excel workbooks, Word docs, etc. to a totally blank jump drive like I have done 100s of times before. But for the first time in my 'computer life', which started in 1980(!), a file appeared on it with the name EA DATA.SF. Googling the file told me that it was a system file and had something to do with Extended Attributes (whatever that is). But the file is protected; attempts to delete it, even using the command prompt and first removing all attributes (attrib -h -s -r ea*.sf) does not allow it to be deleted.
The Google search showed many cases like this, but none where there was a clear, easy way to delete the file. My questions are:What is this file for/what does it do? Why am I seeing it for the first time in 30 years? How can I delete it. or SHOULD I delete it?
Recently, I tried to open a very large file into Photoshop. It froze, and my computer crashed, so I restarted it by turning off and on the power. When it started up, it was normal, but it got to that screen that tells you that it was shut down incorrectly, and asks if you want to go into safe mode, normal mode, last good configuration, etc. When I go into normal mode (or last good configuration), it gets to the Windows Startup screen (flag w/ green bars moving below), but then the computer just restarts itself.

The number of different bytes is proportional to the lenght of the original. The size of the copy is correct. Position and value of the different bytes vary between each copy.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently updated XP pro to SP2. I am having a problem now right-clicking files anywhere on my system. Windows will hang and give me an error about "Dr. Watson postmortem has caused an error and needs to close". After waiting a minute or two explorer.exe will close and open again and I receive an event id 1002 saying "The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted."
What makes this even weirder is that I can right click on shortcuts and other desktop icons with no problem, its just when I right click files no matter where they are either on the desktop or somewhere on the harddrive. I have uninstalled SP2 and tried to see if the problem went away and yes it did. I then reinstalled SP2 again and the problem is back!
We have 2 users set up on Windows XP. One of the users works well. When I log on to the other user, I get this message: "Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close". I have tried clicking on "Send Error Report" and "Don't send". It freezes up that side of the computer and won't do anything.
View 12 Replies View RelatedDr Watson postmortem debugger error in SP2 when trying to access external usb2 drives? Specifically large video files. The drive freezes completely.I have two external drives on a hub, and have one on an alternate port. I've split them and tested separately, to no avail. Also tried uninstalling usb drivers, running norton/adaware/spybot because I read something about a virus. Never had a speed or freeze issue in SP1 running HUGE videos, or editing software from multiple disks.I only see a few suspects on hijackthis log (a second dr watson?), but don't know enough - and I'm curious whether SP2 might be the culprit.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need help with a very annoying problem. For several months now I have been experiencing totally random explorer.exe crashes. They can happen maybe every couple of days or sometimes it can go several weeks before a crash. The crashes can occur when using Windows Media Player or while browsing the Internet or sometimes doing absolutely nothing at all Like I said it is random, not only in what I'm doing but also when it happens. The error message is very vague and when I look in Event Viewer, all it says is Event ID 1000, Faulting application explorer exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x04aa2128 (the fault address is never the same though.)
I've started having constant Windows Explorer crashes lately. It usually happens after I have a directory window open on the desktop and then close it. Unfortunately, it often freezes Dr. Watson with it, and my PC becomes unresponsive until I enter the Task Manager and kill both instances of Dr. Watson that is showing. What sort of things affect Windows Explorer? If there is something corrupt, is there a chance that if I install SP3 it will fix it?
View 48 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq-based computer running WinXP SP2 on it and for a little while I've had explorer.exe crash on me from time to time just out of the blue. Well a new problem has risen and it started today and its a nasty one. I was testing out a file-sharing program, but it said I needed the latest Java update to run it, so I went to the Sun Java website and downloaded their J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 06 (that's what was on the site) and got that all set up and started checking out the program I had downloaded earlier (Limewire Basic) from Filehippo.com and as soon as I clicked on a file from the list of files that came up in my search, the program would instantly close out without notification. I didnt see it as a big deal. I got a hold of the file I was downloading, but every time I went to or near the folder in my personal folder's directory, explorer.exe decided to crash on me. So I thought I might have caught a virus, so I looked to see if it was on some programs I've used in the past for finding trojans and whatnot and it came up clean. So I uninstalled and deleted LimeWire and thought maybe the Java had something to do with it. Turns out I was wrong again. So right now this machine has no Java on it. So I went into safe mode and still could not get to the folder with the file in it. Explorer.exe AND the Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger app both crashed on me (got that normal error in which you can send out an error report to Microsoft) and it did this several times.
So then I booted the computer back into the normal mode and attempted to get to the file through the cmd.exe (DOS) program and I eventually figured out (with the help of someone on my buddylist) how to get to the specific directory that the folder was in and I tried to delete it, but everytime I typed "Y" to the prompt, cmd.exe would crash as well. Now it sais that there are 0 files in the folder (has 3 subfolders in it) that I was trying to delete and 5 folders (including the "." & ".." on the DOS prompt. So I've been screwing around with this for about 4 1/2 hours now and I've had no luck getting to that specific folder. If I try to get to it through my folder, explorer.exe crashes. I can get right to the directory that the folder is in and then it will just crash. Everything else seems to run just fine. I havent tried checking the disk check thing, but what does one reccomend I do? I've already reformatted this computer once before (last year) and I dont want to have to do it again (because I dont have the money or the WinXP disk to get it reformatted again).
I have read everything I could find in this group on Dr watson, I still do not know WHAt he is and why he is there,,,,I was told he was spyware and should be deleted out of the pc. Did that, he came back! It says it is from Microsoft, can ANYONE tell the answeres to the what and why about this little dr man.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had the following problem while logging on to my computer (Windows XP) this morning: While starting up I get an error message saying Windows Explorer must shut down (with the option of sending an error message to MS) even though WE was never open to begin with. When I try to open anything up, like IE or Word I get an error message from Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger saying something about it needing to close (can't remember exactly since I'm at work now). The computer then freezes up and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete out. I ran McAfee Virus Scan and it discovered I had a trojan (netpals). It was apparently cleaned but when I tried opening something up I got the same error messages.I cannot open any programs using my Start menu or clicking on the desktop icon.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI browsed through the posts of this forum and I hope you can help me to sort this issue out. I often experience dr Watson postmortem to cause my Windows Explorer to freeze. This is particularly true when I display a number of pictures in a folder directory as icons or when I open a divX file with Windows Media Player. Sometimes, even when I drag and drop a media file (the longer the file the higher the risk), I experience system freezes. The only way to recover that is by stopping the operation through the task manager.I understand that the problem is not with dr Watson per se: this is just the debugger, but I cannot sort the cause of the problem out.
