I have a PC and recently purchased a used laptop. The laptop was already running windows xp. I reinstalled xp in the hopes it would fix some glitches. Once I reinstalled it, I ran into an internet connection issue. I only have dialup access at my current location. The laptop has wireless capability as well as a dialup modem.

When I bought my new computer (other than laptop) and plugged it home, I didn't do anything and my connection came on by itself. Since I was not the one who installed the OS on it, I don't know how it was done when prompted for the connection settings.When prompted for my Internet connection, I had the choice of cable or DSL and I chose cable. I also had the option of ignoring this configuration and go on. Did I make a mistake? Should I have ignored it? Now I don't have my Internet connection and don't know what to do.
View 10 Replies View Relatedmy cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable.In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. It's installed with no conflicts.
I got a Toshiba with windows XP.. Its an older laptop and runs slow.. which is fine for what i need it for.. It is connected through a Dlink Cable modem. Recently moved and had a DSL connection of 3 years no problems. Had to switch to cable broadband. The lights all light up solid no problem. Network cable connected to no problem. Problem : NO internet
Unplug netowkr cable from cable modem (get the network cabled unplugged in windows, so it is seing the modem or atleast talking to it)Tried using the windows xp network srtup wizard. I did that hub one (connected thourhg a hub) and i tried the direct connection (goes from modem to computer).
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.
On one of my laptops I keep losing my internet connection. In Network Connections, when I right-click and look at the properties, this laptop only has general & advance tabs and on my other one has the wireless network tab. I was told to go in to SERVICES.MSC and start the Wireless Zero Configuration service. Well, this did work, but they said when I reboot it wouldn't remember it and I would have to do this all over again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI unfortunately had to reinstall windows onto my laptop (dell inspiron 1520). However, a windows disk didn't come with the computer so I used the one that came with my desktop (dell xps 400). It's running fine and all that jazz but I am clueless on how to set up my wireless connection. When I first bought the computer the first time I opened it it automatically picked up the wireless connection and all I had to do is type in a password and such. Now I guess I'm starting from scratch... There's no webcam software on it or anything like it came with. The resolution doesnt even fit the same after adjusting it. (It's close but still a little stretched out)

I have a wireless network to which I connect several computers and devices and everything works like it should.When I try to connect my laptop to this network, it fails.Every 5 seconds it goes from not connected to acquiring network address.I am sure that the key is correct, I am sure that my router is belkin router is wireless G and so is the Ralink RT2500 card. I am also sure that I have not white listed MAC addresses so my laptop won't connect. Basically I have done every simple thing that perhaps could be causing the problem.

He came home last week and tried using his laptop on our home wireless network (w/Linksys router). He said he was not able to always connect so he tried to set up (configure, repair) the wireless connection himself (always a dangerous thing to do).Now he gets no internet at all (IE always goes into 'offline' mode) under Windows XP home.I've tried to trouble shoot the connection but so far I have been unsuccessful. The laptop can see the wireless network (it shows as available and connected). There is something wrong with the network connection that IE uses but I don't know how to go about fixing it.

I don't think that this problem was necessarily caused because of the others issues I have recently fixed because I have had this issue in the passed but it just seemed to fix itself. I have a HP zd7000us laptop with wireless capabilities. However I the system does not even show any wireless network available. My desktop in my house has no problems going online with the wireless, neither does my psp for that matter. It's like the computer doesn't even know it's there. I went to the hardware wizard on my system and it says the wireless card is working properly but it will not see any available wireless networks.

Seems the only place he can connect to a wireless network is at his home.I now have the laptop trying to figure what the problem is. Here's what I found. I was able to connect to the internet via a wireless at my place. First on another friend's wireless unsecured connection. I was also able to connect via my own connection a WEP secured connection. Connectivity lasted for about 30 minutes. I was suddenly disconnected with a message saying the there was no connectivity via my WEP connection. I then tried the unsecured connection and was able to connect to the net at least for a few minutes. Since that time I've had some trouble connecting. I've opened a command prompt and entered ipconfig / release, then ipconfig /renew. It works on the unsecured wireless connection, but not on the WEP network.

View 1 Replies View RelatedComputers are 2 identical Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro.Dell #1 was given to me. It had never had ANY updates applied, had 56 Trojans and a bunch of other problems. I took it to the local library and used their WiFi connection to download Grisoft AVG, Ad-Aware and Microsoft Malware Removal to clean it up. I then was given an identical used Dell #2. it was at the SP2 level, so I again went to the library and updated this one with 85 XP updates.Then, as a learning experience, I restored XP Pro on Dell #1 from a Dell CD, P/N 1R594 and then installed SP2 on it. All went well.I then tried to use WiFi on Dell #1. I tried to create a new connection, but when I clicked on finish nothing got created.I looked at Dell #2 which has a working WiFi connection and noticed that when I click on All Programs I see an entry for Dell Wireless, containing 2 itemsDell Wireless WLAN card Readme and Dell Wireless WLAN card Utility This entry does not appear on Dell #1 even though I used it on a Wireless network prior to the XP PRO CD restore today.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have Acer Aspire 4270 laptop (pre-installed with Linux), bought a year back. I got Windows Xp (SP 2) installed onto that by the shopkeeper. Now that I am installing Windows XP (SP 2) by myself, I am getting a lot of issue. These are summed as below:
1. Problem finding the LAN, Audio, Graphics/chipset drivers on internet.
2. I installed Audio driver (Z01-Audio_XP Vista-v5423whql <-- for Vista) and its working fine. Also I downloaded a LAN driver (working fine). But could not find any graphics driver.
Main Issue
3. After performing above stuff, when I create a new folder, I cannot rename it. When I try to delete it, it does NOT gets deleted but in turn creates a new folder with the name "New Folder(1)" or (2) like that.
I have tried formatting the entire hard disk and installed XP 2-3 times, still no luck.
5. Internet is working fine but cannot take backup of my stuff as same kind of problem occurs in anything I connect to my laptop.
I am really getting frustrated with the issue.
Is this issue because of a wrong driver?
have been given a old laptop with no hard drive to play with. to start with i charged up the battery.. We have power and the bios screen starts up with no worries
i purchased a new 40gb harddrive and loaded it inserted the winxp disc.it runs thought the set upo as per normally the when you go to load windows it only see's 8gb of the 40gb harddrive???? (why is this).the so i figure it is because its old so it format it and start the installation only to get a ERROR msg saying the harddrive is faulty.. (it is not as i loaded vista on it with my other laptop)
reinstalling win 2000 on a laptop. In the past when I have needed to wipe an installation, I have just pulled the drive and put it into another of my machines to clean the hard drive to start all over and proceed that way. That being said, I have never done one with a laptop. I have a laptop that an aunt asked me to wipe. She does not remember the login password.

I have grown really tired of Vista and I would like to use XP for my laptop. So I used my old XP installation CD, but after I clicked "Install", a message appeared. It told me that the installation could not be done because the Windows system on the laptop (Vista) was newer than the XP on the CD. Can this be fixed in any way?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently Installed windows sp sp3 on my dell laptop and after i restarted the computer i found that i am stuck in a boot loop! i cannot boot to anything not safe mode or last known good config. Everytime it boots to normal windows, it gets to the boot screen scrolls across once and then stops and shows a blue screen for about a second, not enough time for me to see, and then it reboots and repeats the process. I have been able to see the bsod because of disabling the auto restart and it showed this stop : c0000221 unknown hard error systemrootsystem32 tdll.dll. When i boot into safe mode it gets to the agp440.sys or whatever it is then restarts.Now im pretty sure this is a common problem with sp3 installs, but isnt that normally on amd machines where you have to disable intelppm. Im running a dell with a pentium 4 m processor so it cant be that.

However, since the install i have been unable to establish a continuous connection. It starts and stops for no reason at all. I have been online and it loses connection saying there is no dial tone. It's been coming on slowly, but my connection to the internet, via internet explorer is extremely slow. I also experience long waits opeing new windows, or attachments from a site, as well as rply and fwd on E-mail. Once connected moving from site to site is normal speed, but as stated other openings take up to 2-3 minutes to connect. My ISP says my connection is fine, but I do get a connectivity icon on occasion, causing me to click repair, and it goes away.

I have my internet connected threw USB dirctly to my modem. Then i have my crossover cable plug into my Xbox and the other end in my ethernet port.. And when i trying to bridge the connections i get a error on my xbox something about the DNS sever i try to fix that but i think its because I am not sharing my internet connection.. This is the error i get when i try. An error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled.The specified service does not exist as an installed service And here a screenshot of the error you can make it bigger for you can read it..

However when i went to view all network connections, there wasn't any connection icon there. SO, i created a new connection and the computer asked for a restart to complete the process. After the restart, i went back to the "view network connections" place and there was no icon there. i repeated this process many times and still get the same result.
