Interesting Read - Running Dual OS For Multi Purpose PCs
Aug 26, 2007
I found this post at a home-recording forum that I read. It sounds like a good set-up for my own personal needs, but I thought I'd post it here and get a few opinions about it. If you have the space for it on your software harddrive, make an extra partition (a physical harddrive can be divided into several logical drives, behaving as different harddrives) for only music work and a partition for all the other stuff. You can have 2 different installs of windows (doesen't even have to be the same version) on the two partitions, so you can uptimize the one for music and keep it free of all the ekstra software that you want to have on your everyday office/gaming computer. I've done that since I started using my computers as DAWs 4 years ago, and it works very well.
How to setup a multipartition system:
*If installing all over, and able to format the whole harddrive (By far the best solution!!)*
1a. Backup anything on the harddrive that you might need again to another physical drive or another computer.
2a. Boot from the Windows installation disk and use the menus in the beginning to delete any existing partitions on the harddrive (will delete EVERYTHING on the disk, so backup FIRST if reusing a harddrive)...............
I have Hp media center with 1 Tet. dirve (this was installed) lateron. I had installed meida center 2004, 2005(winXp pro) when Vista Came I Installed Vista unfortunately clean install. so I lost xp.Now I am tinking to install win98,2000,vista and linux if possible then Media center winxp pro ver.How I should procede. If I go by installing with win98 and partitioning and installing os.
I Installed a 2nd HD and cloned my first HD to it as a backup and would like to be able to dual boot. This is XP Pro. I would like to know what numbers to use in multi, disk, and rdisk.
Recently I reinstalled the OS on my computer. It was shipped with Windows XP HE SP2, but I formatted and put Win98 onto the system. Needless to say, it froze up at the Windows splash screen. So, I uninstalled it and put XP back on. My question here is, is there any possible way to put Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows XP all on one hard drive, and it work? I know how to partition the hard drive accordingly for the deed, it's getting the computer to actually run 95, 98, and 3.1. I'm cheating fate here, since I know 3.1 probably won't run on my 32-bit structure system, but it's worth a try. My system is a Dell Dimension 4700 with 3.0 gHz CPU, 256 mb of RAM, and an nVidia 64 mb video card.
I haven't been here in a long time! I didn't post much but I do use this site as an information source quite frequently! Anyways, I have an interesting 'oddball' stand-by issue with my PC.My stand-by and hibernate options are grayed out. Now, before you tell me to search the forums, I already have lol. It's not your normal power scheme issues and the PC is ACPI Multi-processor PC.Now, I've tried everything I've come across on the net. But here is where it gets 'interesting'. if you reboot standby is actually an option for about 20 seconds until the PC loads fully. In fact, if you click it you go into stand-by mode. But wait one second too long and it becomes grayed out. I can't figure out for the life of me what's causing it to happen. It's almost like a software conflict issue, but I highly doubt that as nothing runs at start-up.
So i am having some problems here. It is nothing big, but, it bugs me because i am so organized with my laptop. When i have windows media player running, and i utilize the taskbar for windows media player (put the little play, forward, etc in the taskbar), it creates a gap at the bottom of my taskbar of about 10 pixels of grey. Everything gets pushed up, it is wasted space. Now here is the wierd part, when i go onto my desktop (right click) - properties - appearance - advanced - "active title bar", it is set to size 18 with size 8 font. if i change this, apply it, then chnage it back to the way it was before (18 and 8), the little grey bar will dissapear. But once i restart windows, i have to do it all over again
greetings when I start my computer it stops on a screen that makes me push the f1 key before it continues this has just started I have dual boot with 1 hard drive running linux and main hard drive running xp,I was having problems with the computer slowing down or staying to busy and run cccleaner a few days ago and it looked like that helped a lot but now a few days later I get the boot up problem
Due to a corrupt system file I did a repair using Recovery console. PC came back up with a few problems. Uninstalled most applications and Service Pack 2 and reinstalled. I have now noticed that my Athlon XP2 dual core processor is only running as one processor. In device manager it shows both processors and when the PC boots up it recognises that its a dual core processor. Yet when I run the Athlon utility that reports back processor information it only shows the one processor. Tried uninstalling the processors through device manager but nothing happens.Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this before I do a reinstall of windows?
On my profile I entered under experience, "Sometimes smart, Sometimes dumb". This is a "sometimes dumb" question. Exactly what is the purpose of a compressed or zip file? I use a geneology program that automatically compresses data when you save a file so that a large amount of data can be stored on a floppy disk.
I recently sent some information to an individual via email and that person requested that I use snail mail instead because it took forever to download on their dial up connection. Using "properties" I look at the size of the file at it was 2.25 MB. I thought perhaps compressing the data would not take it so long to download so I placed it in a Windows XP Compressed folder and then looked at the size of that folder and it was 2.19 MB. Not much of a reduction and would probably take just as long for that person to download. Am I doing something wrong?
I RAN McAFEE VIRUSCAN, AND HAVE THE PERSONAL FIREWALL, AND STILL FOUND 12-13 PROGRAMS THAT COULD NOT BE DELETED, CLEANED OR QUARANTINED; WHAT THEN IS THE PURPOSE OF MCAFEE
I'm having trouble w/forwarding e-mails that have pix. Does that have anything to do w/directx? When I did a search on my computer for directx it said read only is that what it should be? Basicly what is directx/what does it do?
could someone please explain to me the purpose of the "System idle process" from what i can tell, it doesnt do a great deal, it starts up at the most inconveniant times, and takes up 99% of my cpu resources. is it possible to kill it?
drop down selection in the properties of a shortcut? It has 3 selections: Normal, Minimized and Maximized. I guess I don't understand its purpose because I can select a particular option of the three but nothing changes. So I figure it isn't what I'm thinking it's for.
I was looking in my task manager and I have 40 processes running. Out of those 40, the process with the highest use of CPU is the 'System Idle Process' which hovers around the 95-100 range. What is it, and do I need it running?
Described on MS Update web site as follows: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 Download size: 22.4 MB , 3 minutes The .NET Framework version 2.0 improves scalability and performance with improved caching, application deployment and updating with ClickOnce, and support for the broadest array of browsers and devices with ASP.NET 2.0 controls and services. After you install this update, you may have to restart your computer. Also, can anyone explain in English what this is suppose to do and if could cause any potential problems based on info provided below? (More system info in bio if needed) My computer and DSL connection speeds are so fast I cannot imagine I have a need for ''improved performance'' but I like to keep everything up to date. I just want to make sure this download won't interfere with with current McAfee services, music downlading from Napster, Rhapsody or whatever, or AOL or SBC/Yahoo DSL connections. This computer is not used for video gaming. Computer has plenty of free hard drive space. Intel P4 630 3.0 GHz; IE 6.0; AOL 9.0SE - I can currently be signed onto both Yahoo and AOL simultaneously.
I'm currently running Vista on a raid 0 array, and want to dual with XP. I have two partitions, one with vista and the other that I tried installing XP on. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. In vista I can see the other partition where XP was installed, and inside is just a folder titled WINDOWS and it seems like all the windows files are in there
I have four computers, three on windows XP and one on Linux. All are connected to the internet via a D Link DI-704. I had to reformat and reload one of my computers yesterday with windows XP and then proceeded to set up the networking. I will call the windows computers A, B and C. I reformatted A. Having run the networking wizard I can now from A read C but not B. B will not let A or C in. I need permission from the administrater. There is no administrater on any computer. C can read A but not B. B can read A and C. Does anybody know what is going on?
I have been trying to install Windows XP as a second OS as I already have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.
I'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?
I have dual booting on my PC with Vista home premium on a 500 Gb SATA disk and XP Pro on a 250Gb SATA, both internal. Vista no longer holds terrors for me and I'd like to get rid of XP and regain better use of the 250Gb HD. Can I just remove XP from the control panel in the XP boot or is it a lot more complicated?I don't really want to re format the XP drive as I'd have to transfer a lot of data and files
How many of you here use multi languages on the PC? I am having a BIG PROBLEM with the Language Tool Bar. I've been using English an Japanese on my PC and this never happened.I used the Microsoft Office 2003 Language Setting to "add" Japanese and it's been running fine. But today, all the sudden, the Language Tool Bar disappeared. Language Tool Bar = The bar appears automatically on the screen when you are using multi languages on the PC.If the Language Tool Bar is in inactive, it's restored on the Left-Bottom of the screen. Eng for English, Jp for Japanese. So I tried removing the settings and re-added, re-started, nothing happened. Also I tried Control Panel, Regions and Language Setting, added Japanese (it was already added), nothing happens. In fact, if I see the current settings, there are English and Japanese there! I tried Spybot and Ad-aware to see if any problem. Then re-started, result, same. Updated IE to 7.0, result, same.I didn't change any settings today, no new downloads or installations before this problem occurred.
I have Win2000Pro Could anyone tell me what the "N" startup item is? Before I disabled it HKCU was preceeding the location extension, but I have searched (as well as I know how)the Current User beehive and can't find a thing This shows up in no Start Menu/Startup folder, nor in Regcleaner startup list Disabling has manifested no problems, but what the heck is it?
I have Win XP home installed as OEM software on the C drive of my PC. I also have this OS as a Norton Ghost file supplied with the PC as a "Recovery CD". I have installed a second hard drive designated "D" This all works fine. I wish to install Win 2000 (which I have on a Microsoft cd) on the second HD. I would then hope at boot - up to be given the choice of which OS to load. Can anyone tell me what is the simplest way to do this?
All of a sudden my WinXP Pro is highlighting multi files to be opened. If if click lower on the screen all files above are highlighted. How do I stop this from happening?
One question about Multi-Core and Mulit-Processor machines. It is the duty of the operating system to make use of all the cores and CPUs? or it is the duty of the running application? And which one should optimize this task?
I have to do a complete wipe and reinstallation of XP. It runs slow, reasons unknown. Anyway, on the old system, we had 2 users, both with administrative privileges. I need to know whether multiple users will cause the performance to drop in a major way. I understand the answer is yes IF both users remain active with programs running. But, we close our programs and log off completely when we switch users. Will multiple users on a system bog it down if only one user has programs running and the other user is logged off?
I have had some XP problems, which have involved me installing several versions of XP.(all of them are gone now except the one Im using.)The problem is, When I start my computer, It gives me the option to start in all 3. (only 1 of which works)I thought the file to edit to get rid of this was boot.ini, but I cant find it anywhere. I have searched my whole computer
