A new icon has appeared on my desktop, its legend says windows placement and as I peeked it, it identified itself as windows registry editor, version 5.00. Does anyone know if this is malware of some sort, or if it is something genuine?
View 7 RepliesDell computer from 2001. . I was on the regedit screen, and when I went into one of the HKEY_LocalMachine or one of those HKEY folders, the "Classes" folder got deleted. That's when everything kind of...messed up. Regedit stopped working (asked for an "appropriate program from the list" to use with it) and almost everything stopped, so I had to shut the computer down.
Now when I shut it down and tried to get back on, I couldn't get ANYTHING on the logon screen except a dinky little Windows logo, with no usernames, making it impossible to logon!
how the heck do I get back to the WIndows logon screen with the usernames back? Do I need a special CD I need to purchase, and is there anyway to get back the users without losing all my stuff? Please help.

Now I have a new problem...I can't click on my desktop icon to start Windows Live Messenger. I can't even right click-->Open the program. The icon appears on my task bar, as if it was running, but I know it is not. I've of late had this same problem with other programs, so I know it's not just Windows Messenger. Does anyone have any suggestions?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to get rid of my "Symantec Antivirus" program, but I couldn't find a way to uninstall it, so I deleted the program folder (with included files) and the related shortcuts and left it up to my registry cleaners to get the rest. However, whenever I right-click on an icon or the desktop, it gives me a couple of Systemac Antivirus installation windows that I have to cancel out of before I get my right-click menu. My registry cleaners, anti-spyware, and anti-virus programs can't find anything. Searching for "Symantec" provides no results. How do I fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP on a HP Pavilion ze2000.I think I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger. Actually, I think I have several problems:
1. Messenger tries to load in my tray when I start the computer. It never did this before. It also does the same when I connect to my broadband via dialler. At the moment I am denying access through Zone Alarm. Is this normal?
2. In All Programmes I have a Windows Messenger Icon and a Windows Live Messenger Icon. Again, is this normal? There is only an option to remove Live Messenger in Add or Remove Programmes.
3. There is a "1 contact pending" message above the contact list in my Live Messenger, which leads to a "page not available" message when I click on it.
3. When I close Live Messenger, I get multiple "RPC Server Not Available" warnings which I keep closing but keep reappearing. They appear too fast for me to close them, so I have to restart my machine.
I was wondering how to fix this problem, the icon for internet explorer in the start menu shows up as an unknown file icon. The icon on the desktop for IE shows fine but when i try to click on it, it creates a shortcut for internet explorer. if click on IE from the start menu, it opens IE with no problems.

View 2 Replies View Relatedno IE icon on desktop or in programs. i have internet access through verizon. i recently got windows update to install IE7 in the hope that would restore the icon/program but the only way i can access the internet is via the verizon browser. i clearly installed IE7 because now the "sidebar" of my verizon browser says that "sidebar i currently not compatible with IE7...". so why can't i get the IE7 icon in my program list or desktop?

and I can create a shortcut to the desktop and run the program.But, I'd like my icon back.I believe the problem was created by having all my icons underlined so I only have to do a single Left click to bring up the program.
I've winxp Home with SP2 system, yesterday my daughter had installed the program 'MS Plus' from the XP Installation CD which was not installed earlier in the machine. My OS is original, but to-day on opening the system I'm seeing that the icon of Hard Drive(E : Drive)to which the program was installed went missing and in its place another icon (which generally represents for any unidentified file) has taken its place.

View 9 Replies View Relatedproblem setting the CD/DVD icon to return to it's normal icon in My Computer. It currently has the Audio CD icon. I've played an audio CD awhile ago and since then, the icon has remained. This icon is causing problems when I open a Data CD. When the Data CD is inserted the Audio icon emains. When I click on the icon, Media Player starts. I have disabled the auto-run or auto-play setting prior to this problem. I would have to right-click and select Open to get to the data files.
Under Windows Explorer, when I click on the icon, it shows the contents of
the data CD but the Audio icon is still present.
Just wondering why when you drag an IE http short cut to the desktop, it does not display the site logo icon. Sometimes, they will show and others not. I have had them even come and go after different sessions. I log on to Internet both through work firewall and at home on network through firewall and in motels through open and firewall protected isps.
I came home today and found my computer had turned from the sleek silver windows xp theme into the windows classic version. I also have no sound and in the control panel it isn't picking up any audio devices. I cant change the theme back to windows xp in properties either it says im using Windows XP (modified). PLEASE HELP ME! All i know is that the power went out at some point today (about 7 hours ago)

For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

when opening windows xp the screen gets to the windows xp with the little green light going back and forth in the rectangle box. this green light goes back and forth 3 or 4 times then freezes and you cant go further then that.

To do it without using the cd it has to copy the installation files to the computer and then run them. When setup does this it creates a new choice of an operating system to boot from called "Windows XP Setup." So now I have a Windows XP and a Windows XP setup. View 8 Replies View RelatedI had to put windows 2000 on my moms PC, which is part of a network, and now EVERY computer on the Network sees an "Internet Gateway". WHY???? The only computer that can see shared files is my moms with the windows 2000. theres 3 more computers all running windows xp. how do i fix this? File sharing is now available, but I myself believe the internet is being slowed down. THe Internet gateway that windows XP is picking up is reading 8.0 mbps. My connection has gotten as high as like almost 2, but it should not read that.

Turns out I wiped out some important .dlls that windows needs to start up correctly. I am hung up on a DOS screen that reads:

I format windows 98 with win98 startup disk and windows XP was installed. every start the pc,it prompt two boot loader for option.windoes 98 or windows XP. How to delete the window 98 option on the boot loader screen because windows 98 had been formated.
Computer seems to run fine until i hit start and shut down my computer it goes through the regular process until it gets to the blue screen that says WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN then it just freezes right there and the mouse wont move i have to hold the power button in until it shuts down it does this all the time now. i heve windows xp media edition service pack 3. since then i have updated my bios have turned on and off sound drivers and video drivers and deleted and installed my anti virus programs and it will not allow me to go back to any previos stores.
