View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been having a serious problem with explorer If i try and right click any file, explorer will hang, then my desktop and toolbar goes blank, the tool bar and desktop icons eventually return. The same happens if i left click the file menu button for explorer. Sometimes, (not everytime) a message appears telling me drwatson post mortem debugger has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. explorer.exe returns to the process list in task manager.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhenever i open an explorer and right click on a file, it will terminate all open explorers as well as take down my launch bar (which will subsequently be rebuilt though). What i want to do is to delete a file, and it does not work with pressing delete either (same effect). But, as i said, the whole conext menu wont open. I am not really aware of newly installed programs, could be wrong on that one though.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFrequently when I right click anything, and occassionally when I select items for the start menu on my windows XP pro machine, the installation process for a program I already have installed wil begin - it must be manually cancelled (some times 2 or three times) before the originally requested response is given. At first it was Norton Anti Virus which attempted to install. More recently, Contribute seems to be the favorite. (Both are already installed).

View 12 Replies View RelatedTrying to help out the grandparents, who just returned home from a trip. They tried setting up their computer and it is giving them the message about the file missing or corrupt (something similiar to this- I may have the order wrong: c:windowsconfigsystem 32) We printed off the directions from Microsoft for the recovery console. The first two files to copy regarding system and software indicate they "cannot be copied" however, the last three were able to be copied. I stopped my efforts there since the first two didn't work. I noticed a prior post indicated I could ignore the first two copy commands, is that correct? Or can I try a repair in the reinstall option? What should I try first? Unhooking the printer/speakers? Hardware issue? If that fails, try F8 and use last known configuration? If that works, do I do a system restore? When would I use "safe mode?" We are at different houses w/o wireless so I am trying to get all info I can before heading back over there.

While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

I started getting browser and sometimes PC crashes. At first it seemed to be browser related. But the PC would also crash when idle. I tried disabling add- ons in Firefox and opening in safe mode. Tried using Chrome but it would crash with the message that Flash had malfunctioned. Then I started getting Stop messages and BSODs.I hadn't installed and new hardware and, I don't think, installed any new big programs except for updates to existing ones.
I emailed a few of the mini dump files to a friend. He said they didn't specify which drivers were causing the problem. But it might be something to do with the video or the network card. I rolled back drivers. No change. I updated drivers and uninstalled lots of programs. For a month everything seemed stable. Then the BSODs started to return. Infrequently at first but then more regularily. Sorry the story is a bit confused but it is difficult to remember every detail of what happened and the order I did things in.
I recently downloaded a service pack for XP, but when I re-started the computer, it got stuck in the middle of the re-boot, tried several times to start it with no success and after a while it just gave me an error message saying that the attempts at rebooting had failed.

PC was rebooted and this message showed up. I couldn't get to safe mode so I put the XP disc in. I got to the D:winint dir and tried to run bootcfg to scan for the boot file. It came back that it couldn't find it. I was able to see the dir's and data on the 2 drives. I ran chkdsk to see if that would solve the problem, it didn't. Do you think this is a BIOS problem or a missing boot problem. If it was the BIOS would I be able to read the drive. Looking for a fix without destroying everything.
