I just installed Windows XP Professional over Windows 2000 Professional but I would like to completely wipe my hard drive and just have Windows XP installed. Does anyone know of a program I can use to totally erase my hard drive and start overwith a clean drive? I used to use a FAT32 format but this computer uses NTFS.

I need some one to take me step by step "SLOWLY" and tell me how I can wipe my Hard Drive completely Clean, as if it was right out of the box.I am not all that bright when it comes to computers.But come on.How tough can it be, if you are taken through it one step at a time? Please don't use computer Lingo while holding my hand through this. Just tell me as simply as you can, how a computer browser type of person can do this task all by themselves.there has to be some one out there that wants to share the secret?I have a few buddies who do it all the time, and when I ask them how to do it.they just say, that it is to difficult to explain as if it is a Big Dark Secret.I would Love to be able to do it myself.can some body tell me the easiest way to do it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.

Now it does not find, or is having a conflict with, my ethernet controller, audio device, system management bus and VGA. I can probably download updated drivers for the other things if I can get it to load a driver for the ethernet, but since I can't, I am pretty well screwed. I would appreciate any help from anyone who is at all familiar with the Dell Dimension 2400.

Last time this happened had to spend $ at Best buy where we boutgh it for them to fix. They said the operating system is hidden somewhere i the system. When I get to setup it tells me that setup cannot continue because the version currently on my computer is newer than what I want to install (which is odd, it's the same program as far as I can tell!!) I decided to say screw it and reformat. well it wont reformat properly it wont totally wipe the c drive.. it will delete and or reformat the d drive partition.. but when i come back c drive still has all the program files etc.. i have tried to do it through system restore and type in reformat c: /fsintfs and that wont wipe it either.

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
current HD going bad, have second HD installed and using as back but now i need to make the second HD my primary, can i do this without having to reformat in order to add booting files.

well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. When I go to CMD promt and type Format C: it tells me that everything will be erased, yes all well and good. I enter yes and then it tells me that another process is using the hard drive and cannot format. It tells me that I can disconnect the handle or something like that and I again enter yes. It then tells me that It can't disconnect. What the hell? It doesn't even work from Dos? Now the bios, device manager, and disk manager recognizes the slave drive but didn't assign it a drive letter. In disk manager it shows as a basic disk, NTFS, Healthy (Active), 18.65 GB,Online. When I right click the volume to assign a drive letter it is grayed out.
