Hard Drive Partitions - Programs Into The Second Partition
Sep 21, 2005
I have partitioned my hard drive and loaded Windows XP in one partition. How do I set the default to load any programs into the second partition. My intent is to only have the operating system in the first partition.
XP home edition re-installed, it gave the hard drive three partitions, C, D, and E. C drive has 9.75GB the other two have over 60 GB. I need to put more back to C drive.
1st post here and I hope someone has answers. THis is new to me. Ihave a 200gb HD. I have it partitioned into 5 partitions. Onepartition for my C: OS, D: Software, E: Games, F: Storage, G:Graveyard. Well I do this so if anything happens to my OS, I canreinstall and all my other info is safe. After the reinstall of myOS, everything was perfect, I had some issues with my G drive andaccess denied but I managed to take ownership. Well I installed someupdates etc last night and did some restarts without any issues. Idecided to do a disk check on G upon next boot up. Well I just bootedup this morning and only my C drive exists now, All my software whichis installed on my D drive is now inaccessable as well as all theothers. I went to Computer Management and it shows the rest of mypartition as 175gb of FREE SPACE?
I have a 200gb Seagate SATA HD. I have it partitioned into 5 partitions. One partition for my C: OS, D: Software, E: Games, F: Storage, G: Graveyard. After the reinstall of my OS, everything was perfect, I had some issues with my G drive and access denied but I managed to take ownership. I went to Computer Management and it shows the rest of my partition as 175gb of FREE SPACE? Anyone has any ideas? There is no way that the rest of my drive is formatted as I never touched it so I assume it is still there.
A while back a friend partitioned my hard drive into three different partitions. the one I use is now almost full and I would like to merge the almost-full partition with the next partition, which is completely empty. Can anyone help me with the steps to do that? Thanks in advance. I have a windows xp system with the big service pak installed also. the pc is a dell dimension 4300 with a 1.6 ghz processor and 513 mb of RAM.
Found some very useful info on here so decided to sign up and post a recent problem i encountered with an external hard drive. the hard drive has a capacity of 80GB and came from another pc. there was a 25/55 partition already on it from the old pc. i tried to delete the partition that was 25gb. now i can't find that 25gb at all. when i plug it in to the usb slot i can only see the 55gb partition it used to appear as 2 hard drives in my computer and nothing else. when i use disc management to format it i only see 55gb.
I have a Thinkpad T43 with Win XP Pro. The 60GB hard drive has two partitions: one is an IBM_PRELOAD(C) and the other is an IBM_SERVICE partition. I would like to duplicate this disk onto a 120GB disk. I have tried to use the Win XP backup Retrospect Express 6.5, but I can't get either program to duplicate the IBM_SERVICE partition.
I want to partition my new hard drive. Its external. OS is windows XP. I had a look on the net and it looks simple, go to disk management and right click on the drive you want to partition and select 'new partition' This is the problem, i dont have the option to create a new partition. I have formatted my drive to NTFS and there is no data on it. It currently shows one partition the whole size of the drive.
Sometime early next year I will be building a new system. The system will likely have one large hard drive. As of now I will be installing XP Pro. I was curious how everyone else splits up their drive. How big of a partition is generally created for the OS. And do most people partition the remaining space. Now a file architecture question. When non OS applications games, utilities, MS Office, etc.) are installed do most people put then in D:Program Files Or create separate sub-folders for the broad categories and install them in the appropriate sub folder.
I currently have 2 partitions on a single hard drive (each one is running xp).The older partition (the one that I want to get rid of) is the primary partition, while the newer one (the one that I want to keep) is the extended partition. Could someone please tell me how to delete the primary partition and make the computer recognize the extended partition as the primary partition?
When I bought my new pc with XP SP2 I added a second hard drive(FAT 32) that I'd already used for a while in my old pc, and that contains all my data, photo's, music etc. Everything worked fine, but over the past month something strange is happening. From one moment to the other Windows loses sight of that second drive. Sometimes restarting (in every possible way) helps, sometimes not. Sometimes the drive disappears when I'm saving omething to it, sometimes I can save.
I have had a 60G external hard drive that has worked flawlessly for 2 years with both my desktop computer running Win98SE, and my newer laptop with Windows XP. This external drive was formatted with FAT 32 and NO PARTITIONS for all 60G. Because I have a Lot of music files and digital pictures, I have filled up the 60G drive, so bought an IOGear 160G external drive. This drive arrived partitioned into 6 partitions, of 20-32G sizes. This is completely wrong for how I want to use the drive. All my mp3 programs requires the library to be all in one volume, so I need 60-80G all in one volume just for music. IOGear support says that Windows XP does not allow volumes any larger than 60G in FAT 32. (This seems crazy since my older drive is all one volume and is FAT 32.
I have multiple partitions on my HD so that I can have things like the OS and the page file on separate partitions for ease of defrag etc. (OK, haven't done this before and am not sure how smart it was after all)Anyway, I decided to move "My Documents" folder from the C drive to a much larger partition to save fragmentation on C. No big deal, it's easy to do.But here's the kicker... once I'd created a My Documents folder in the larger partition, I decided to click on it and move it to the top of the list of folders, using the My Computer screen.
I have Windows XP , total physical memory 2,058MB, available physical memory 1.26 gb. My hard drive is partitioned into Drive C, with 20GB capacity, 1.45 GB free space (7% ), and Drive D, with 213 GB capacity and 213 GB free space.
With only 7% free space in Drive C, I am restricted in doing some things such as defragmenting and using some programs. How do I take advantage of all this empty space on Drive D, which is just sitting there, to relieve the pressure on Drive C?
My sony vaio computer ( C drive ) is getting slow and has only 3.67 GB free space left out of 13.76 GB. The D drive has 60.5 GB of unused space. Is there a way to transfer some of the data on the c drive to the d drive and still have it available?
40GB HD installed recently. Unfortunately, the installer took the simplest option of making the whole new drive a single partition, instead of two of 8GB and 32GB, identical to the other drive. The organisation is therefore now as follows:That's obviously more secure than before, but I'd like to go further. I want to use DriveImage 2002 to copy the OS to F, so that in an emergency we could boot up to that instead of C. But DI won't allow that. Even though C contains only a TOTAL of about 7GB, and F is 8GB,it says there is insufficient space. It's been a long time since I last used DI, and I'm nervous about how best to proceed at minimum risk. Can I achieve my aim by using the facilities under Disk Operations to 'Redistribute free space among partitions'?
i have a primary hard drive working fine and added another hard drive 80gig maxtor as a slave and i'm using win xp pro.
i know there's computer management menu here in winxp, my question is:on how to format then partition my second hd,into 2(40 gig and 40 gig).basically i need the correct steps or commands.
When I completely re-did my hard drive, I split it into two partitions; a 50gb C: and a 30gb paritition. I don't know how to format or access my 30gb partition or turn it into an actual (letter):Do I need a special program?
I have an old customized computer from my grandma and when it boots up it asks me to select a operation system, there are two. How do I delete the operating system I don't want?I don't care if I have to reformat the whole hard drive... I would actually prefer to. And I have tried to delete one, but I cant seem to get rid of one of them.
I'm not sure this belongs in this section so if its out of place, plz move it.Ok, I just bought a HITACHI HDT725032VLA360 320GB HDD. My OS is currently installed on my 80GB WD800JB. I was thinking of reinstalling windows on the HITACHI but I'm unsure of how to partition it to ensure my performance is as good as possible. So what are your recommendations for the partition size for the OS on the HITACHI ?
I recently turned on my computer to find that one of my hard drives is not formated, but was full of data the day before. Is there a way to recover the partition and data without paying for data recovery services?
I am using xp home and have a 18.6 GB byte hard drive and will be reformatting soon and was wondering if I should partition it or not. What are the advantages? Is it ok to leave it as 1 as I have it now?
I have an xp partition that takes up about half of my hard drive. The rest of the hard drive is just un-partitioned space. What is the easiest and fastest way to resize the xp partition so that it takes up the entire hard drive?
I have a computer that Im trying to fix, the only way to input to the computer at this point and time is the hard drives. I have a working computer obviously. So could I take the hard drive out of the broken computer, give it two partitions, copy the windows install to one partition, start the the install in the broken computer from that partition and install that onto the second partition? Ive heard of this being down but I am no expert.
I copied my data files to my external Maxtor hard disk before I tried to reformat my internal hard drive and reload Win XP. However during my partition, I didn't realize I still had the external drive (160GB) plugged in and it showed up at the top of the list and the original internal (80GB) below it. So, I followed the instruction mistakenly and went through the process of deleting the partition(on the external hard drive) and tried to partition it into two drives. Then I got an error message as I continue to try to format the hard drive "Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free free space you choose . Set up cannot install Window XP on this hard disk." I stopped, reboot and tried to go through the delete partition several times with the same error message. After several attempts, I realized that the external hard drive was still plugged in.
So I unplugged the external hard drive and reboot to go through the process of reformatting and partition the internal hard drive into C drive and E drive and loaded Win XP. Now even though I plugged in the hard. After I installed the external hard drive's software, driver and restarted the computer, I connected the external hard drive and don't see the drive in my computer. I could find it under Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Disk drives but it doesn't show up as an external hard drive under "My computer" with a drive letter. Under the disk management, I see the drive as Disk1 but it was unallocated. Did I lose all my data due to the delete of partition? Can I recover my data and drive ?
I'm having a hard time formating my system. I recently got virus that was so bad i couldn't access my desktop, so i am now formating my hard drive. I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.
My computer came with a 80gb HD with windows xp pro.. I had took a 180gb hd from another comp. that was running windows xp home and connected it as a slave drive. A window popped warning me that vital info. would be deleted in order to format/ partition the second drive (180gb HD). Was this a mistake doing it in this manner? If not...How would I go about using the whole "180gb" and not just the 35gb it's only allowing me to use. And is there any way to move files so that they will be protected?
I have a 250GB Western Digital hard drive with a ~195GB partition formatted as FAT32. The partition is called "Documents" and has the letter C: assigned to it. The rest of the hard drive isn't formatted. The operating system (WinXP) is installed on a different hard drive.Since yesterday in My Computer or Explorer it's called "Local Disk C:" and whenever I click on it I get a box that says "The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?". For two hours it came back and I backed up all the most important information but then the same problem came back again. I was able to see the contents of the partition through a few applications but not access it. My whole computer is working sluggish since this happened.
there was a notification error said that Partition Magic can't read my Hard Drive, because of 'drive wrong naming' (i forgot the exact word) then came up an option 'do you want to fix it?' YES/NO - I chose YES but after that, I can't go into to windows again (Vista64) it stuck on loading process forever
- Hard Drive are detected on BIOS
- When I use another 'health' HD with this 'broken' one, then the 'health' HD won't boot either, but it will normally boot again if I unplugged the 'broken' HD
- When booting via Windows Installation Disk (tried to re-install Windows), it stuck again on windows loading
