I've read several threads here already discussion hard drive noises where the culprit seemed to be a hardware problem. But I'm not certain if my PC is showing all the right 'symptoms' for it to be hardware-related.The clicking noise occurs at start-up and *mostly* (85-90% of the time) during internet browsing.The sound itself is unusual preceeding each click, there's a grinding ''shhhhhrrrrp'' sound.

View 2 Replies View RelatedHP ZT3000 was working fine. after no major changes, hard drive made a few noises and a missing hal.dll error message appeared. I have tried knoppix, for a few times I was copying files to external hard drive but the transfer stalled. I have tried fixmbr, fixboot, and copying the ntldr and ntdetec files from recovery cd. One strange thing is that the file system is now listed as fat16. Is this data recoverable? I have backed up the system on the external but it was about 2 weeks ago. I would like to recover a few emails in the outlook pst file. Is the hard drive fried or did the boot.ini file become terribly corrupt?

I have to right click and choose open from the menu to "open like a folder".I accidentally was doing something weird in the control panel>folder properties(not sure if its called folder properties in the english xp).And now I would want it again to open like a folder, but I just don't know how.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy prob is a bit of a saga I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall managed to find a freephone number and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.
After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.
Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.
So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.
I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup
Which all sound hunky dorey but I don't have any original bootable CD (the PC doesn't have a floppy drive), so I can't type 'r' to repair!!!!
In my possesion I do have an XP Pro CD, a Win2000 CD and a Win98 CD - my question is can I use these other CD's to try a 'repair' and get into the 'manual' area to try the methods above (the OS is Win Media Edition on the PC)?
Dont know why but when i click or double-click de hard-Drive (C:, D:,) the search open automatically.. the only way to enter is right-click and choose open.i notice when i right-click the drive , the menu has the search in black and not the open. how can i edit and set the open the default or reset it.

Just before it started I changed the desktop appearence on my display settings. It started running slow from this point.I then tried to start i-tunes and it crashed.The ususal whirring noise (hard disk?) now sounds like a ticking. View 6 Replies View RelatedAt the end of january, I was on the web and all of the sudden firefox shut down.My desktop background had been replaced with a blue background with a black box in the middle telling me I had a virus and needed to by some software to get rid of it. I was unable to change the desktop back ground. Also, I noticed that after this incident, there was a particular folder on my second hard drive (I have two total) that would crash windows explorer everytime I tried to open, or even moved my mouse cursor over it in "my computer". This particular folder contains several gigabytes of music, video, and pictures most of which is not backed up.I have also tried accessing the folder with a 3rd party file explorer program, and it crashes that program as well.After running several different spyware programs, I was able to get the blue screen with black box removed from my desktop background, but it has been replaced with an error message saying my active desktop has been disabled (even though I can't turn it on or off in the options menu) and I am still unable to change the background.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop died and I removed the hard drive.i hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.
I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive.
My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.
When I open My Computer and right click on the C: drive to bring up drop-down menu, it always says that Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close.

well i have the new hard drive in and started up the machine and changed the bott options to run from the dvd and all went fine until i should press the ENTER ( return ) button to install XP now . as soon as i did that the next window said no hard drive found . this was also happening on the old hard drive that was in the machine .
Currently I have been this problem once this in a while. Whenever I one click, it does what double clicking do. It doesn't happen always, but it happens once in a while. Somebody told me its a bug in Windows where you clicked only once, but Windows think you have double clicked.

My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.
