Getting HALACPI.dll Error On Upgrade / Unable To Remove?

I'm trying to upgrade my Mom's computer from ME to XP Home and the install quits after the first reboot, with an error mesage that "HALACPI.dll cannot be found." (As an aside, if it is required for installation, shouldn't it be on the CD?!) I've located the file on the web, and placed it in the C:WINDOWS SYSTEM32hal.ddl folder (the folder was already present, but empty). I have no idea if this is where it belongs or if it will solve the problem, but I'd like to ask BEFORE I try the installation again - I do have a Ghost image of the hdd, but - getting old having to reinstall the image again and again!

I'm using Windows XP Media Center on a Toshiba Satellite A105... I don't have a lot of options. Reformatting is not one of them. I have a lot (hundreds of gigs) of important files that I simply cannot lose just because svchost decided to crash one day.

while using the Windows XP Setup disk to partition the new drive, I accidentally used the "Create Partition and Install Windows XP" option, instead of just creating the partition. Unsurprisingly, Windows freaked out at having two copies installed on the computer, and it took me quite a while to salvage the thing so it would boot. I ended up using the second Windows install (on D: on the new disk), and left the old, unworking Windows install (on C:) dead on the original Western Digital drive.

this is the error i get when i start up the pc...it's annoying...i click "ok" and then ctrl+alt+del to get task manager...i then manually load "explorer" and everything is fine after that...

I have a Dell insiron 530 with recently acquired virus or trojan that has prohibited my computer from running mcafee. I am running Windows XP. I was considering upgrding to windows 7 anyway. Will the install of a new operating system clean the hard disk of this and any other virus? I have already backed up my files onto an external hard drive and ran the Mcafee on the external drive and it is clean.

My PC presently has Service Pack 1. I have tried to upgrade to Service Pack 2, but I keep getting a message saying that Kernel has detected that my version of Windows XP is not an official one or something to that effect and that the upgrade will not proceed. Is there any way that I can upgrade to SP2 without performing a clean install?

I have recently upgraded to WXP Pro from Home and have since had trouble with my monitor picture, it frequently goes into a very fast scroll for a period and the fine again when using the internet.i have changed the graphics card I have changed the monitor and still the same problem. Also I am unable to connect to MSN Messenger but MSN Hotmail etc working fine.

i have recently added 1 GB RAM in slot M2, and after that the 'system' process at sr. no. 2 is showing memory usage of 73,844 K and it goes back to around 300 K if i remove the newly installed RAM and revert to old 256 MB but the system becomes dead slow.this high usage is also slowing down the system.

I have a fresh install of XP SP2 on one of my drives, installed Sunday night. Drive was formatted first. Yesterday my boss told me that Microsoft had a "Vista Upgrade Advisor" to see if I could run Vista on my computer. I also had a fresh copy if IE7 with all the updates fresh installed from Microsoft.I downloaded the Advisor from Microsoft Download Center, started installing it, and had to install .NET framework to continue. There was another program that had to be ran first, I think it was the Microsoft Installer update. There were four choices, but there was no description to clue me in on which I needed.After installing the two, I then installed the Update Advisor. It gave me an error message like it was not correctly installed, please re-install. I went to Add/Remove Programs and got an error message like: run32dll.exe error This is not a valid Win32 application. All I could go into was My Computer. As of last night upon restart: my antivirus, IE7, all programs, all Control Panel programs, my CD and DVD burners, Comodo Firewall all give the same message. And I CAN'T uninstall the darn upgrade advisor!
At this point I am considering doing another fresh XP SP2 install, since I had not added any programs except for Avast, Comodo, IE7, and D-Link software. All programs are legal and downloaded from their respective official websites. I could not even run the XP installation CD to run a repair, or remove. F12 upon reboot is my option.But does anyone know why this happened? Or is there an easier way to fix this? I don't really think it is a virus unless the above mentioned websites has one.

I have an entry in here for mcAfee shredder which I cannot remove.I uninstalled sometime back,and when I click on it in the add/remove,it shows only the words used-rarely where normally it would have remove option?How can I remove this entry as it does not show in the search or in the registry.

I uninstaled some windows components and it turns out that I need them and have not been able to reinstall them. I have been trying to reinstall the advanced features in my sounds and audio devices. Since I removed that feature when I play a DVD no my computer the sound will not get very loud. I am having no problem with other videos just DVD's. But I have also tried reinstalling games and other features and they will not install either.
When trying to install I use the Windows Installation CD and the installation seems to go fine. I don't get any error message, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I also tried the Add/Remove Programs feature in the control panel and got the same results.

This trojan virus slipped pass McAfee antivirus which still doesn't detect it. Also, each time I start my computer, Windows Defender (which is also installed) detects it, and even thogh I click on "Remove All", it still keeps popping up and is not removed. How do I get rid of this beast?

Hello, folks. I'm having a little trouble removing some corrupted registry entries found with the Uniblue RegistryBoost scanner. It was able to remove the other 667 entries, no problem, but these 3 just don't want to go away:

Ok so apparently someone hijacked a trusted freinds instant messenger screen name sent me an link in the IM window I clicked on it thinking it was my freind and AVG pops up and says a virus was found. So I quarantined it and though I was safe. When I restarted my computer I keep getting AVG poping up telling me the same viurus has been detected and then a website tries to automatically open in IE.

Well i built my pc along with my friend at the end of April. I have had it for several months now. After i first built it, it ran just fine for about a month then BSOD started to occur. I researched on the internet and i found a post that said to post my minidump so that they can see it. When i searched for the minidump it wasnt there, my final solution was to reformat. I reformatted and the problem went a away.

I have a computer that has a driver labeled removable drive but it's not connected to anything. It's like it remained after a thumb drive was plugged in and than removed. It's very strange. I can't figure out how to get rid of it. When you double click on it you get prompted to insert a disk, kind of like what happens when you double click the A: drive and it's empty.

how would I make it so that a program does not go to the taskbar, and instead runs in the background? For example, if a program minimizes to the system tray, I would like it so that it "goes to the system tray" but does not show, even if you expand it. I have been trying to delete a wallpaper my son downloaded by mistake (always blame the kids) named just Internet Explorer Wallpaper I think my sorry his mistake was setting it as background instead of saving in my pitures it seems strange to me that you can go into your hard drive and delete crucial files but its made very difficult to delete a wallpaper.
