Frozen Cursor - Also In Safe Mode Networking
Jul 20, 2010
I am having a terrible problem my cursor works for a short period of time then freezes. I reboot and it happens again. When I am in Safe Mode Networking it does not happen. So I do not believe it is my Hard Drive.

Is it possible to start networking once I've entered Safe Mode without it? I am using Windows XP Pro. Maybe there is a command or something to start the service?

I recently got a few notifications of viruses on my computer. Along with it came a lot of adware pop-ups. I downloaded Kaspersky AV 7.0 from their site and am using it as a trial version. I had an older version of McAfee, but hadn't renewed and do not have up-to-date virus definitions. As the title reads, my computer will only work when I boot windows in safe mode with networking. When I try to boot it up regularly, it goes very slow at the log-in screen and then once I log in, there's only a black screen with the mouse pointer. I left it at that window for a few hours hoping it would eventually load. Not the case. Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode with the exception that ctrl+alt+del works and will bring up the Windows Task Manager and then I can run/terminate programs from there. But no start toolbar or icons or anything else. I have done several full scans and they come up with viruses every time.

I let my roommate use it and look what happened... Good thing I already had a new one.
Compaq laptop running XP has been on "time out' hoping for a change of attitude, no such luck.
Today I tried to put her in Safe Mode and got as far as the "Windows" screen with those 3 blue squares continually cycling. That is as far as she seems willing to go.

In normal mode, internet explorer will not display any web pages. However, if you try
to bring up any site (By IP, or URL) and let it sit there for 30 minutes, it will eventually. Then, once it brings up a single page, you can browe. BUT ONLY IF YOU ACTUALLY TYPE "HTTP://" AT THE START OF THE URL OR Click on a link on the page it finally brings up. Now, to make matters worse, it does not exhibit any of these problems in Safe Mode With Networking. In that mode, everything works perfect. I can browse with no lag what so ever, I can do just about anything.

HP Pavillion A1230n with XP Media Center edition. MOBO died a couple of months ago so replaced with ASUS M3N78-VM and 2Gb memory. System has been running great since repair until last week. Began to show signs of IE7 search engine hijack, but all scans show negative (Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Avira, etc. Google Chrome worked okay, so problem was specific to IE. Tried to get to Safe Mode to run scans and got BSOD. System would boot "normally", but BSOD with page fault error whenever I tried to boot to Safe Mode. Replaced memory with same results. System now BSOD's on all attempted startups. safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, and normal, all with same BSOD results.
Ran Spinrite against drive with negative findings. Created new XP install on another drive and system boots fine. Cloned original boot drive to new 500Gb drive using Clonezilla and get same BSOD results with cloned drive as I did with original drive.
Tried repair install to original drive but system does not recognize new MOBO BIOS as the originator of the Restore disk

I cannot boot my XP machine. In safe mode it also says safe mode in white text in each corner and shows windows build details at the top. I have trying going back to previous good config - same problem. A normal boot just leads to a black screen with a movable mouse arrow - no sign of a login screen. I have tried a recovery reinstall from a an XP pro CD from another computer - this took about 40 minutes and went through all the steps normally (with normal graphics displayed duting the reinstall) but after finishing the same problem is still there.
Only now the windows build info in sfae mode reports SP1 (originally didi not as the computer was supplied with XP before SP1) I am at a loss to know what to do to get the machine wordking without a refomat of the hard disk, whcih will destroy all my data, and my partners stuff too - mostly not backed up, as usual.

Frozen cursor Slow startup
The first issue is that my cursor is stuck in the middle of the screen upon startup. It will not move and I have to shut down, check connections, (keyboard and mouse are wireless, batteries are new) and as it restarts I click the mouse and it moves after I do this several times. I have to put the computer on standby every night or I have to go through the whole thing again. Moreover, windows startup has become horribly slowand I have hi-speed roadrunner I use firefox for my internet connection. I have run defraq, disk cleanup, AVG, maleware, spybot, hijackthis, and Ad-aware. No change....
Thank you for any help. The following is my system infolet me now what other info you may need. BTW V2Premier batch loaded XP on the cpu so I do not have a disk. They are out of business and have sent me in circles trying to get one.

I have an old IBM Thinkpad R51 (loaded with Windows XP) which kept going through the boot up sequence without coming up all the way. I had got it back to the factory default setting and now it is booting all the way to the desktop screen. But I have a new problem: the cursor (laptop mouse pad) is frozen. I was able to move it around as it was booting up but once it boots up to the desktop screen the cursor is stuck in the middle of the screen.
I would load the XP service pack but because of the cursor I can't.

my computer has started freezing after startup. Well, I say the computer has started freezing, but it's stranger than that. Pretty much as soon as I log into Windows, the taskbar freezes up. Mousing anywhere on the taskbar causes the cursor to turn into the hourglass. The system tray icons are frozen as well. This happens every time the computer starts up.
Desktop items are all clickable and somewhat usable, but to a limited extent. For example, I can open "My Computer" but then explorer freezes if I double-click on either hard drive. I have a videos folder on the desktop that I can open, but if I then try to play any of the videos, Windows Media Player opens with a blank white screen and never actually starts playing the video.

my cursor has been frozen in the middle of the screen at startup. I thought it was my wireless optical mouse, but after switching back to a regular (cabled) mouse, it did it again. I just unplugged, and replugged the mouse and it began working normally. I cleaned my system previously with Spybot, Adaware, Regscrub XP, and have AVG, Zonealarm and MS Spyware updated. I ran AVG and Stinger and found nothing.

I have windows xp & last night my cursor froze up. I replaced the mouse but that made no difference. I used the keyboard to navigate & did a system restore to 2 days previous. That did nothing. I powered down several times & still no results. I was playing spider solitaire that came with the computer when the cursor froze. This morning when I turned the computer back on the cursor was working again, but when I started playing spider again it froze up after a while. I powered down & got the cursor back, but who knows for how long. Could the spider game be causing this? I'm running my virus scan right now & so far no threats.

this is the best way I know to explain all of this. I am running a 3 yr old Gateway with Windows xp and Sp 1 & 2. I have always stayed up to date with my Windows updates deleting cookies, defrags and so on. I am running Avast anti virus and Armor 2 Net firewall. I have noticed over a period of about a mth that my system has been getting pretty slow to boot up and load up web pages. Now I am having to manually start my PC and I have to do it in safe mode F8 and click on debugging mode. If I don't do it this way then everything loads up and then my PC just turns itself off. I have PC doctor and I have done a complete diagnostic test and I have gone to antivirus.com and did a virus scan there as well as with my Avast. I am thinking that I may have to totally take everything out and reinstall everything back in. The only thing is -is that I don't know what to type in to get the whole thing going. Also I have been getting a message but only sometimes that says RTL cannot locate HPOIPMO7.exe (HPOIMO7.exe) I haven't a clue what this is. Might it have anything to do with what is going on. I don't mean to write a book here but there is one other thing, the other day I had a window pop up that said that windows needed me to reinstall my xp software and when I tried it said that the version that I was already running was newer than the cd software I was trying to install and wouldn't accept it.

but i think i posted this in the other area before. i had some bugs i couldn't delete in normal mode, so im like oh kay, easy, go in safe and delete the suckers. i restart my computer and f8, and try to go into safe mode, said something about your computer was shut down incorrectly or power lost and some files are missing now.
so im like, ummmmmmmmmmm... how do i get round this. so, i restarted my computer and put it in to the (Last Known Good Configuration), i know, i went to Run>msconfig>Boot.ini>tick /SAFEBOOT and restart my computer, not knowing this was one of the biggest mistakes i've ever done. it starts and it runs a little big and boooom!!! blue screen pops up and this is what it says, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damange to your computer....

An infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:WindowsSystem32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:oot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode.

I went into MSCONFIG and checked the box to go into safe mode so i could run some virus scans and adware scans and stuff like that. Now when it gets to the desktop it has the window that says Loading Windows and then after like 2-3 min. it says password is incorrect and that i should retype it and becarefull of caps lock and stuff like that. The thing is don't have a password. It does this when i boot normally too but it lets me hit ok and hit Cancel without a password entered.
All of a sudden it tries logging me in automatically when I start up but the thing is i dont need to log in. So I try to go back into normal mode and Ican't. I hit F8 during startup and went to the Boot Normally option but it still does to safe mode. What do I do? How do I log on or how do I get rid of this password thing? One more thing, the window that tells me the password is wrong has an OK box but theres no mouse on the screen for me to click it and I can't use the keyboard to select it.
