I've got a Dell running Windows XP Home with a very specific but hard to search for problem:
1. Opening any folder in the same window (folder options set to 'open folder in same window') is incredibly slow (minutes) but opening any folder in a new window or setting folder options to 'open each folder in a new window' is perfectly normal.
2. Internet Explorer takes minutes to load a new page (you can see that it's loaded in the staus bar but you can hear the computer grinding for minutes until it displays the new page). Firefox is just fine. Both of these issues appeared at exactly the same time.
3. Probably unrelated but windows installer is not functional? (I haven't looked into this much yet)
Nothing unusual is running in task manager and none of the normal processes are running extra hard. I have done the basic spybot, adaware, and regfix scans with a couple files removed but none that affected this issue.
Notice considerable lag when doing the following simple tasks: use the dialog boxes to browse folders (save as, etc) is slow ,double clicking my computer or any folders is slow, right click and create new folders is slow, clicking START button and going to programs is slow
While trying to add a DOS prompt to the Folder context menu. I seem to have inadvertently broken/deleted something in the registry.Whenever I now open a folder, it always opens in a new window, irrespective of the folder settings (in tools).
I downloaded a picture I wanted to use as my desktop scene to My Documents> My Pictures. It loaded OK.Control Panel>Display>Desktop> Browse>My Pictures opened OK,but, the pic I wanted did not show up. Rechecked My Pictures via My Docs and there it was. Trouble is I can't load to Desktop from there as it has to be from the Browse window. Why do have 2 My Pictures?I have rebooted and tried everything I could think of.The picture I want is a .swf file which I opened from an email.
I'm using Windows XP Pro. For the last few days, whenever I click a folder it opens a Search window instead of an Explorer window, as I prefer. I went to Tools > Folder Options > File Types then highlighted "File Folder" and clicked the Advanced button.
I changed a setting on the folders options to allow me to see program file extensions on power point files. After I did this, I tried to open a folder in my documents. Instead of opening the folder, it opened a search que. Now I can not get windows to open the folder instead of a search que. how to fix it?
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
My XP Pro SP2 PC is now doing something rather strange.Instead of open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens a command prompt window, to the path of the folder, when the folder icon is clicked. This only happens if I click on a folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Clicking on a folder in the left pane opens the folder in the right pane, as it should.I have the same problem with any shortcuts to folders on my Desktop. Instead of opening the folder, it opens a commnad prompt with the path to the folder.I know this has something to do with the File Types tab.If you click Tools, Folder Options, in Windows Explorer. However, when I go into the Advanced properties of "File Folder", I can only Add, I can't Edit or Remove. And yes, I am logged on as a member of the Admins group.
I know this is a weenie problem, but I don't have the time or patience to research it on my own, help please. After my last fresh install of XP, occasionally when I open a folder it opens as a tiny rectangle in the upper right corner. I have tried to resize the window, then exit, it's fine for a while, then the little bugger makes a reappearance. I've been through Folder Options, TweakUI, and if the info's there then I hust have missed it.I have several installs of XP, this is the first appearance of this issue. I could also just chalk it up to the 'PCnality' of the machine.Hardware is Pentium M 2.0,1 gB RAM, 7200 RPM 80 Gb HDD, Radeon 9600, Asus M6N homemade laptop.
This only applies to my folders, but everytime I left-click them, it gives me the search window instead of opening it. I don't remember changing it to do this, is there a way to change to back to Open?
I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
When i double click on a folder in say "my documents", a search window opens instead of opening an open window. If i right mouse click on a folder the word "Search" is shown at the top of the list in Bold instead of "Open". how can i fix this?
Certain folders on my computer take forever to load after awhile. I've noticed that these are usually folders with a lot of files in them.At first, I thought it was just my external hard drives which were acting up due to it being USB, however, I found out the other night that my program file folder on the C:/ drive took a long time to load, as well.Even if I turn the external hard drive off, cool it off, then turn it back on, those particular folders will still take awhile to load.I've also noticed that if one folder lags, then the others will lag around the same time.
I have a lot of folders on my pc so from time to time I go into the folder options and in the folder views sections I click "Reset all folders" The other day I opened up my computer and the panel on the right loaded then disappeared and then the search icon came up (torch and folder thing) and I guess it searches for the hard drives then after a bit of searching it loads them which is really annoying.
Using window xp pro I on computer.I'm using pentium 3..

When i open internet explorer i can see home page and explore it. But there is some problem when i open new window or enter to a some link. Its very slow. and after that there is iexplorer.exe error on display.
From the time I log in, it takes 5 minutes for the desktop to load & another 21 minutes for the system tray to complete loading. While waiting for the system tray I have time to have coffee & do the crossword puzzle. I would much rather be reading my Email.
I have a recent problem where my computer will spend anywhere from 5-10 seconds switching to a different window. It doesn't matter whether it is loaded or not. For instance, I'll have 2 MSN conversations open where I can see both at the same time, and no matter what I'm doing, it will take the same amount of time just to switch over to say "lol".
This is very annoying, because if an error comes up (in any program) that requires opening a new window, it will take 10 seconds to load, and then 10 seconds to respond to me clicking "ok". I am wasting so much time waiting, and it is becoming one of the most aggravating issues I've ever had.
This also applies to clicking on anything on the start bar at any time, minimizing, maximizing, or changing size to any window ever. It doesn't effect anything that happens within any programs itself that aren't window related.
I'm using XP and have 2 gb of RAM.

I've got a very peculiar problem with my desktop computer. When I go to the Delorme website or support forums, pages are exquisitely slow to load, and the forum pages never complete loading fully. The problem doesn't seem to be with their site, since I can access these same pages just fine when using my laptop, or my daughter's computer, all plugged into the same cable-modem connection as my desktop, through a hub/switch. All 3 systems are Win XP Home/SP2, with all critical updates installed. The system having the problem is a 3 year-old Gateway 2.2 GHz Pentium 4, 1 gb RAM, with ample hard drive space available. Both SpyBot S&D and AdAware SE are run regularly, and have been run recently, along with NAV2005, and no virus, worms, spyware, etc. are found. It is running IE 6.0 It is just these Delorme sites that exhibit this problem, with all other sites loading extremely quickly on my fast cable-modem. In face, PC Pit Stop usually clocks me in excess of 4000 kbps download most of the time.
When Windows loads (black screen with blue thing moving) It takes really long (about 2-5 min usually). After that, blue screen, where computer would scan disk C:/ - It don't scans, just stands on 0%. And the third thing, windows start up loads pretty slowly.I need help really, because whole computer started to work very bad since windows loads slow.I runned CCleaner, cleared everything, runned AVG full system scan
it posts fine, but takes 4 minutes from desktop appearing to fully load (noticably the last icon to appear on the taskbar is the LAN connection),the old pc would be ready to work within 30 seconds of powering on.i've tried booting with all non-essential startup items disabled via msconfig.reconfigured bios several times, using almost every bios version designed for this board, currently using the bios specifically designated for this CPU on this mobo.ram is configured according to mobo specs (its in the right slots).i am aware the agp card is somewhat underpowered, but it did provide reliable quality functionality on the old PC.
this was a clean XP home install (same disc used on previous PC) fully updated, hdd's are all ntfs partitions, regularly cleaned up and defragged.the best information i can gather from ASUS forums is that there is a problem with the on board ethernet (intel pro 1000) however there does not seem to be a solid fix or any updated drivers available, the LAN connection does drop in and out at random times sometimes frequently (enough to make me doubt it is an ISP problem) and sometimes not for a week are there any further suggestions?should i be disabling the onboard ethernet and installing a standard PCI 10/100 as i have gathered a faulty ethernet port does slow XP load times considerably.i should mention i have had the CPU professionaly tested good and ASUS support seems to be somewhere in the bermuda triangle for the p5p800se.
Webpages take forever to load. Sometimes they don't load at all. All webpages are this way not just some. Either they just set there saying they are waiting. Or it says done but the screen is white. Or after hours it loads but not completely. Or I get the message that ie cannot open the webpage. You just recently fixed a DNS hijacker with combofix. I have ran antivirus and antispyware and antimalware. The machine seems clean.
Internet pages open extremely slow in IE8. When I open IE it takes about a full minute for my home page to load and open. Any quick fixes? Running XP home, 1.2 gig processor, 512 MB RAM
It's running like molasses in January. I've run Spybot, Advanced Care, AVG and defragged. It was better for about 10 minutes and that was it. Slow to load any program, internet is slow, a girl could get old here trying to get work done.
I have a cable connection and lately I have notice that most of my internet pages are laoding painfully slow. I have clean up the temp files, cache and have check for adware/spyware. I am directly connect to the cable modem so there is no interference with a router. My cable provider says there is no "packet loss" when they ping by IP. They suggest that it is something to do with my PC any suggestions?
For 2 days now it takes my computer a long time to load up and a long time to shutdown. I did a scan for spyware, trojans and virus's and it still hasn't fixed the problem.
I have posted this problem before and haven't really gotten it resolved. My computer takes so long to load pages its driving me crazy. I feel like I am on dial up. it takes like a minute for a page to load. I have tried the AFT cleaner
I have Windows Service Pack 2 and all of a sudden my computer is running painfully slow. Takes ages to boot up, desktop images don't appear for ages, anything I click on doesn't happen for a few minutes. Internet is the same. I was going to look up some info on the menopause, but websites taking so long to load I think I may have been through it by the time I find out about it! AVG says no virus found.
Started having issues last week, very very slow loading XP , then once loaded it would freeze take forever to get going again, opening programs files etc took forever, loaded in safe mode last night backed up as much as i could, at some point the comp. shut up and tried restarting, now windows won't load at all, either in safe mode or normal start up, i know a little bit about comps not enough to know if im completely ed or not, or if there is another way i can at least back up my Hard Disk or reinstall windows on my other Hard Disk and back up the orginally Hard Disk that way.
Last weekend, my internet conection at home got really slow, for no reason at all. After contacting my internet provider, they were saying that my conection had no rpblem at all.I decided to conect my notebook in the same cable, always direct out of the modem, and for my surprise, it was totaly normal there, downloading from my referece server at 600 Kb/s. Conected my desktop back...and the problem persisted, couldnt dowload at more them 20 Kb/s from the same server.
Hi everybody. Since a couples of days, when I clic on a folder into the left panel of Windows explorer, it takes really long and is Very, very slow to show up the related contained folders and/or its contents in my Windows explorer's right panel. I have a Pentium4 processor and additional 3GB of rams I also tried to adjust my PC for best performances in "advanced" Performances/properties of MY Computer.
