Explorer Window Defaults To "Search" Instead Of "Folders"?
Aug 3, 2007
If I open "My Computer" and then I double click on the C: drive icon (or any drive), it opens up a new window with the Search panel on the left. If I right click on a drive, the menu comes up and "Search" is the in bold, indicating it is the default. How can I change this so it is no longer the default, but opening it up with "Open" as the default?
my computer was infected. I used to able to do a search from the address bar, but now I'm hyjacked to some sort of porno search engine.I use spybot, zone alarm,AVG, webroot. I've tryied using Hyjack this program in atempt to find problem.Still suffering!!! Any suggestions ?
I'm using Windows XP Pro. For the last few days, whenever I click a folder it opens a Search window instead of an Explorer window, as I prefer. I went to Tools > Folder Options > File Types then highlighted "File Folder" and clicked the Advanced button.
I changed a setting on the folders options to allow me to see program file extensions on power point files. After I did this, I tried to open a folder in my documents. Instead of opening the folder, it opened a search que. Now I can not get windows to open the folder instead of a search que. how to fix it?
This only applies to my folders, but everytime I left-click them, it gives me the search window instead of opening it. I don't remember changing it to do this, is there a way to change to back to Open?
I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
When i double click on a folder in say "my documents", a search window opens instead of opening an open window. If i right mouse click on a folder the word "Search" is shown at the top of the list in Bold instead of "Open". how can i fix this?
I'm using Windows XP. When working in Microsoft explorer and double-click on any folder it does not open the folder, it opens Search window. Only way I can open and see content of my folder is to right click on folder and choose explore.
What are the rules for a case sensitive search when searching for all files and folders in XP. I have set the option, and have tried searching in both upper and lower case options, and still get the same results.
i have this problem, when i click on any folder o shorcut to a folder the search window is open, i need to open every folder from the explore option on right click of the mouse. any help?
why i start My Computer (also happens when My Computer is highlighted in Windows Explorer) and when I clicked on C drive it opened the Search window. So from then on when I want to explore the contents of A (Floppy drive), C (hard drive), D (CD drive) or E (DVD burner) drives I've go to right-click and select Open or Explore from the context menu.
FYI, the order of commands in the context menu are: Search... Explore Open
I just installed a new external USB hard drive on my notebook to increase my storage capacity. The problem is, in doing so I must have enabled some weird seach option, because when I double-click either drive (C: or external) in My Computer it brings up a search window with that drive selected as where I want to search. Any ideas what caused this or how to disable it?
While trying to add a DOS prompt to the Folder context menu. I seem to have inadvertently broken/deleted something in the registry.Whenever I now open a folder, it always opens in a new window, irrespective of the folder settings (in tools).
when I go to my search for files or folders (CTRL-F) the window opens but all that is there is the animated character. The search balloon isn't there and I can't open any of the toolbar menus
Whenever i doubleclick on any of the Drives(C: , D: ) a windows search window appears, if i have to open i have to rightclick and select open...also i observed that when i right click on my c drive or d drive the first option i have is "search" in bold. and then the next option is open. whereas for anyother folder open is my first option when i right click and in bold!
Whenever i click on a drive icon whether it be a hard disk or DVd drive rather than opening up the contents of that drive windows opens the search window. Whats going wrong?
I've got a Dell running Windows XP Home with a very specific but hard to search for problem:
1. Opening any folder in the same window (folder options set to 'open folder in same window') is incredibly slow (minutes) but opening any folder in a new window or setting folder options to 'open each folder in a new window' is perfectly normal.
2. Internet Explorer takes minutes to load a new page (you can see that it's loaded in the staus bar but you can hear the computer grinding for minutes until it displays the new page). Firefox is just fine. Both of these issues appeared at exactly the same time.
3. Probably unrelated but windows installer is not functional? (I haven't looked into this much yet)
Nothing unusual is running in task manager and none of the normal processes are running extra hard. I have done the basic spybot, adaware, and regfix scans with a couple files removed but none that affected this issue.
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
My XP Pro SP2 PC is now doing something rather strange.Instead of open a folder in Windows Explorer, it opens a command prompt window, to the path of the folder, when the folder icon is clicked. This only happens if I click on a folder in the right pane of Windows Explorer. Clicking on a folder in the left pane opens the folder in the right pane, as it should.I have the same problem with any shortcuts to folders on my Desktop. Instead of opening the folder, it opens a commnad prompt with the path to the folder.I know this has something to do with the File Types tab.If you click Tools, Folder Options, in Windows Explorer. However, when I go into the Advanced properties of "File Folder", I can only Add, I can't Edit or Remove. And yes, I am logged on as a member of the Admins group.
Exactly as the file says. I try to open a drive to search through it.. such as the c: drive.. and it will do a little processing.. and it will open the browser to the 'search' program instead of opening my drive. Same goes for every file on my computer! Eek! Anybody got any ideas? I may have f*$&ed something up when I was trying to change the default folder and drive icons in the Folder Options. Anybody! This is rather detrimental to my computers health lol! help!!
All the folders on my computer are now opening into a new window with the Search function. I have to right-click and choose open to get into my folders. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
Does anyone know how I can change all the icons of windows!! Like search , run, folders, control panel, and control panel options??? I have some icons that I want windows to use!! How can I do that???
When i open a folder search pops up and doesnt open the folder, when i right click on the file "search..." is in bold. How do i change this to open the folder directly
I know this is a weenie problem, but I don't have the time or patience to research it on my own, help please. After my last fresh install of XP, occasionally when I open a folder it opens as a tiny rectangle in the upper right corner. I have tried to resize the window, then exit, it's fine for a while, then the little bugger makes a reappearance. I've been through Folder Options, TweakUI, and if the info's there then I hust have missed it.I have several installs of XP, this is the first appearance of this issue. I could also just chalk it up to the 'PCnality' of the machine.Hardware is Pentium M 2.0,1 gB RAM, 7200 RPM 80 Gb HDD, Radeon 9600, Asus M6N homemade laptop.
When I try to open one of My Folders (One that I added to my desktop with application I added to it) with a double left click a search results window opens instead of the folder opening and displaying the contents of the folder with things I've put into it. If I right click on one of my folders and go down and left click on open the folder will open and the contents displayed as I expect (The first opetion displayed is a search after I right click). Any other folder including My Documnets folder will open the folder and display the contents correctly. At one time it used to work correcly and its not a major issue but I would sure like it fixed > Any ideas?
I need some help. I'm running windows xp pro w/SP2. Everytime I select search to look for files/folders it hangs. It doesn't work. Is there a fix for this?
Since moving to Win XP I have found that Win Explorer Search Files & Folders function does not work properly (as Win 98 did).I need to search a subset of the files (for example *.pas) to find a file containing a string (for example TLargeInteger). Win 98 would have found this but Win XP returns with no item found when there is definitely a file(s) with that string in it in plain text (ie not unicode). Is there some subtle selection I am not making or is the Win XP Search function broken.
before we did the system restore he was able to type a word into the address bar and it would do a search, now it does not, says page cant be display. If you type in a url it works fine. I have check the advance settings and it is check to use the address bar as a search. Do any of you guys know how to fix this so he can use the adress bar as a search.
I tried to change the start button text just now (following the instructions here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/change_s...utton_text.htm) but I ended up not liking it because the search function was rendered unusable. Anyway, I read that there was another way to do it by just renaming the original explorer.exe (to something like ORIGINALexplorer.exe) and replacing it with the modified version (now named, explorer.exe) and putting that in C:/Windows. This way, there's no need to go into the registry and the search function is still usable.
just installed a new hard drive in my computer and now, every time I open any window at all, if I click "X" to close it out, an internet explorer page opens up that is blank. When I close that, I get a Windows Explorer error message that says "Windows Explorer needs to close". I'm thinking maybe there is a problem in the registry but don't know exactly how to go about fixing it.
