I ran Disk Defragmenter on my Windows XP Fujitsu N Series Laptop and it only runs for about a minute before it goes into "Paused for Shadow Volume Copy" and just sits there. Strike one. After scouring the Microsoft tech support site, it says I can disable Shadow Volumes through the Backup utility, but I can not find "Backup" anywhere on my Start>All Programs and couldn't find it by doing a full search of my C drive (though many things came up with "backup" in its name and I may just not know what I'm looking for).
Now however, my hard drive seems to contain approx 13GB of data which I am unable to locate, even when viewing the "hidden files" option. I first noticed this increased used space when I wanted to defragment the hard drive and noticed that there was only 45% free space available (there is usually 75%).I have viewed the properties of all the folders on the C: drive and they do not add up to the 20GB shown on the C: drive properties...The defragment report states that "some files in the volume could not be defragmented"
I have created a Bart PE bootable XP cd. I can boot into windows using this CD I would like to know how to copy the data in my hard disk to pen drive or flash drive.
I have been looking on Ebay at used/refurbished computers for upgrading from my current and older P4 chip computer. One that I'm looking at says that it has a (legal and genuine version) of Windows XP Pro SP3 o/s installed on the custom built computer, but there's no disk. If I were to purchase a computer like this, and make a back up copy of that installed o/s on my own disk, will there be any difference than if I had received the original installation disk or manufacturer's restore disk?.....or would the installed (and backup) o/s be considered an "unlicensed" copy?
I recently upgraded the hard drive on my computer from a 5200rpm drive to a much needed 7200 80gig maxtor. When I start up the computer and click my user name, windows xp professional logs me in and the first item to load is my norton (with an exclamation point). none of my other tasks in the toolbar load and the computer is kind of paused. i timed it to last 45 seconds. and then suddenly the screen refreshes/all my tasks load. I cant seem to figure out why there is such a pause. The only start up items I am allowing (via msconfig) are for the anti virus software and a dialer for my verizon dsl connection
I've done virus/spyware etc. scans and it's all clean first of all.I used black vipers startup guide to trim down my services that start on boot and it seems to go pretty quickly and that's all fine. Then when I try double click the icon that brings up my dsl connection it pauses. There doesn't seem to be any disc activity, but when I bring the cursor to the taskbar it turns into an hourglass so obviously it's waiting for something.I've brought up task manager during this and I see that it's loading some more avg components as well as imapi.exe which appears and then disappears.
I would like to have the original desktop look on the Windows XP computer that I had on one of the user accounts. There should not be shadow on the desktop icons and there should not be a license plate style behind the icon description text.
My desktop items are highlighted with a blue shadow.I don't know how to eliminate that. My wallpaper is visible and the computer seems to be working fine.
On our other machine we have a 70 GB hard drive. It is partioned C: 20 GB and D: 50. All the program files are on C. When I try to defrag C I get the message "Volume C has only 4% free space available for use by Disk Defragmenter...it requires at least 15%". I uninstalled some inessential programs and got it up to 9%. In my wifes user account there is one folder My Pictures with 2.9GB. Can I move that onto the D partion to create the needed space?
A folder named "System Volume Information" has been created in each drive (C:,D:,E:,F:)and consuming significant disk space day by day. Whether deleting these folders will create any problem. Any other technique to stop increasing the size of these folders ? Please suggest.Presently consuming more than 3 GB in total. Sometimes I need system restore to speed up the PC (besides other registry tools )therefore this function is enabled in the system.
On my desktop, up until recently, my icons have began to have a blue pixelated hard shadow behind them, which looks extremely ugly and is annoying me.I've tried changing background pictures to ones that are a darker shade, more akin to that of the problematic "shadows", but they won't seem to go away.I've trauled through Windows display options, but I can't seem to fix the problem.
Last night I set my computer to check and repair the disc. I have done it many times before successfully. But when I rebooted I got the message "Cannot open volume for direct access Windows is finished checking the disk" Then windows starts up. How do I fix this?
Can someone please tell me if I can use a Windows XP Professional disk to repair a Windows XP Home Edition unmountable boot volume? My sister-in-law's Dell Dimension 8400 is getting that error when she starts the PC. She can't locate the disks that came with the PC and I only have an XP Pro disk. I repaired my laptop using recovery console about a year ago but that is XP Pro also.
My OS is Xp sp3,the "Compress Volume to save disk space" check box didn't exist on my volume F: Properties, and all of "Compress contents to save disk space" check box of file or folder wasn't enable in my volume F:,but other volume is fine.
I have an external hard drive for backup, connected by a USB cable. When I use Windows XP defragmenter to defragment it, it says that some files could not be defragmented, and there are still blocks of red on the graphic display (red means fragmented). Any idea why this is?
i'm with windows XP pro and iv searcjed the who;e newsgroup for info but to no avail.when i try to defrag after only a few seconds i get a report saying that some file could not be defragded, it turns out there is a problem defragging a few files.the files are VERY big and i was wnodering what could cause this, thie main big files are:

I am trying to copy some files to a CD Disk, so that I can open them on a different computer. I have put a disk in the drive, highlighted the file, clicked on "send to", and I get the message: "Please insert a disk into Drive E (or F, whichever I happen to try it with)".The drives won't recognize that there is a blank CD. If I put in an audio CD or a DVD, it recognizes it, and plays it fine. It's just the blank ones that are giving me a problem. I have tried several different brands of CD . . . same result . . . "Please insert a disk into drive"
I got a new computer, and when trying to set it up (it doesnt have windows on it yet) it asks for a copy of a system disk. What is the system disk? is it the windows disk? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i've never set up a computer without an OS on it before.
I bought a computer years ago that had Windows XP Home preinstalled and of course, it didn't come with a Windows Setup CD. I'm finally at the point where I'd like to do a fresh install. I can't afford to pay my $6 cab fare let alone $100 or more on an OS I already own and everyone I know has Vista. Is there a way to get a free copy of the setup disk, maybe one that's already been used, directly from Microsoft if you can provide proof that you already own a legitimate copy of the OS so you can just use it for the installation part and put in your own license info? If not through Microsoft, what about from the manufacturer, have you known any of them to give you an option like that where they can send you a "dummy disc" or something just so you can reinstall? My PC was made by Systemax.
I have several thousand fragments of files from using system restore on Windows XP Professional that cannot be defragmented from my hard drive. I only have fifteen percent of free space left and that was after I removed several programs. Disk cleanup only heleped minimally.
I want to copy files from my hard drive to my dvd writer.InCD screws this up.I want to be able to open windows explorer and move/copy]selected files to a dvd. I then want to be able to read the files direct from the dvd using windows explorer.
For some reason, my user account in Windows XP says that I do not have administrator privileges, even though I am registered as a Administrator. Because of this, i cannot use command prompt, disk defragmenter, and registry editor. I use Windows XP Pro, with SP2.
I have a problem with understanding the differences between these words (actions), when I use Retrospect,( a backup program,) I cannot read any files since the backup file turns into a huge something. When I backup, I mean I copy my files from one drive to an external drive and I can always restore them or copy them to another computer. These are for my files. When I want to re-install a program, I take the original disk or the zip file I downloaded, stored on CD or another external hard drive.
Just wiped my hard drive clean and am trying to reinstall OS but get a Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. When i add the cd it just repeats Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. Have wiped my hard drive before and haven't had this problem. The boot order is correct in the BIOS and i havent touched any cables.
I had bought several hard drives as is, hoping one of them would work. thought I had one, but turned out I couldn't install XP onto the disk, wouldn't copy any files. so I pretty much cut my loss on the drives and removed it the bad one from pc. now I get 2 options when booting windows. my original xp install, and the 2nd install that still needs to complete, how can I stop it from wanting to install xp again from the boot file and keep the original settings as they were?
I have a six year old dell. old installation of Windows XP is damaged beyond repair so I will have to reinstall it.I have the dell serial number, service tag number, and most of the other relevant information. I even have the original Windows XP license key number printed on a label on the side of my computer.the one thing that I do not have is the Windows XP installation disk. What is the best way to resolve this?I have seen XP disks for sale on ebay craigslist. Can I purchase one of those and install it on my old computer? If I do that should I get a new license key from them or do I use my old one.
