I have an excel spreadsheet that starts up from the start-up folder. The
problem is that it starts up before another program does that imports DDE
data into the spreadsheet. This would then cause the spreadsheet to hang. Is
it possible to place a delay statement in the start-up line that would delay
the excel spreadsheet for 5 or 10 seconds.
When my Toshiba laptop (p4 2.8, 768mb ram) boots up, the desktop background appears, but nothing else does for about 45 seconds. In the meantime, I can move my mouse freely and invoke taskmanager to start programs (File... new task). I'm pretty sure that this problem is not due to an excess of startup programs but instead due to some setting or manual time delay.

I can delay the running of some startup items? As an example, MSN messenger runs and attempts to log in before my internet connection is active and therefore returns an error everytime I turn on my PC.I would have thought that theres a switch I could add after the shortcut command.

I can't think of any application I've added during this time.I removed all apps from the StartUp folders.After turning the system on the opening splash screen comes up and then promptlythe image for my wallpaper (in use long before this problem).Then it pauses for 1-2 minutes.Ctrl-alt-del can be invoked. It shows 3-10% cpu use, little I/O.The process continues with the appearance of the desktop icons and the taskbar.

When turned on, it starts to show the post check on the screen, then it stops and beeps once, followed by 9 more beeps. After a minute or so, it seems to warm up and start. Sometimes I have to hit the reset button. Once running, it is fine, but it is driving me crazy to figure out the beeps. I know that once upon a time, in DOS, different numbers of beeps meant something, but I can't remember or find a reference.It is irritating to have this sequence when starting the computer.

Now whenever I load Excel, it takes a minute to "install excel features". I would think one install of whatever features it is installing would be sufficient. Why does it keep installing the same features and how can I get it to quit doing this?I am using Excel 2003 on a Gygabyte GA-8IEX mother board with a Pentium IV 2.53 cpu.

The selected theme is Windows XP.If I change the theme and click Apply, the tabs all appear. But if I close & re-open the Display Properties, I'm back to Themes with no tabs.There is a similar post here already, but no one has posted any solutions.

She's had it for about six months now and earlier today upon startup it hung for a very long time (about 20 minutes). She rebooted it to the same results. I tried doing the only thing I knew how which was booting it in safe mode, which gave me a brief flash of a blue screen before restarting. I went to safe mode again so I could make out what the error message was before the computer restarted itself and I saw that it said KERNEL_INPAGE_DATA_ERROR. There's an error number at the bottom, but the screen flashes by so fast that I can't make it out. Anyway, it's been a few hours and startup is still hanging. I have tried booting it in the last good settings mode and nothing seems to work. I'm not very PC savvy (yes, I am a mac user :P) and my limited knowledge doesn't really help in this situation. I asked her if she had deleted any files which might cause a startup problem and she said that she hadn't. She uses the computer strictly for her iPod, printing papers, and burning the occasional CD. There are a few harmless games which have been downloaded for a long time now, but I don't think that she recently installed any software that could cause a kernel inpage data error, whatever that is. Her most recent piece of installed software is for her new phone, but even that was a week ago. When this problem started, the laptop wasn't very hot so I don't think that would be a problem either.

I have reloaded Windows on another HDD and I will be able to recover most of my data from backups. However, there is still some recent data on the bad disk which I am frantic to recover. I am able to find the "Documents and Settings" folder where I believe the "Outlook Express" data is held
I am unable to get into the folder as my username on the computer was passworded (the password is known). Neither am I allowed to copy the folder to my new drive. I cannot access the folder from my new OS even when I password myself with the same username / password. I have attempted to repair the bad drive's copy of Windows but that wasn't successful. I don't want to replace the bad copy with a fresh as this would reformat the drive taking with it the folder I want (and can't copy). Any work on the folder would need to be on the bad drive, it seems. I have run out of ideas.
Can I install XP on a hard drive which has only one partition with data without destroying the data?

In the list of programs on the new Start menu was EXCEL.EXE, but the icon was wrong and when I clicked on it, it couldn't find Excel. I went to the properties of the link and changed EXCEL.EXE to Excel. It still not working, I deleted the link.Now whenever I click on an icon on my desktop, the system tries to open it with Excel. Apparently the change screwed something up, but I do not know how to get back to where I was before.

There were many items recommended to be Disabled and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest an easy way to fix my problem rather than working tediously through every Disabled item one at a time?

In 2000 when I had multiple workbooks open and used ALT + TAB there would just be one icon for Excel, now there's one for each workbook I have open. Just had 8 open at once so finding my way around is a pain, know there will probably be just a box to tick somewhere, but damned if I can find it! Anyone else know where to change this setting?

View 3 Replies View RelatedHaving looked at a few previous threads on your forums, you seem to be pretty intelligent so I guess this is the best place to post my problem, Recently I purchased one of those quadcore machines (Q6600) with a blank HD, so installed XP Pro + SP2. There was errors when installing SP2 (and SP1, when I tried that), where by it gets so far, then just freezes. Having left it for hours to try and resume, it didn't, and I was forced to end the task. When I rebooted the machine I was prompted to uninstall SP2 as it wasn't installed correctly? This wasn't an option for me, as I NEEDED to install msn IM lol anyhow.When I boot my machine up, just before the logon screen loads where it says something along the lines of "Windows is starting up...", it just stays on that for ages (several minutes!) before continuing to load the logon screen. Once the logon screen appears, everything else is fine.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI just install SP2 the other day and there are a few fixes I need, I've gotten more of the compatitbility issue Number 1 is with Excel. When I open up any workbook it treats the left mouse button as pressed. So when I go to click on any cell is highlights it and tries to select an entire group. The only way for me to close the program is to use the taskmanager or right click the program on my start bar.Number 2 is WMP. Some video files I had don't play sound anymore and I have all the same codecs as before.

I had the Office XP installation disk "repair" the installation. there was no change. I tried MSWord. Help screen was same as in Excel - blank. I then tried to access Help and Support Center from the Start Menu. It would not open. I solved the probem by running the restore tool from the System Tools folder and setting the machine back to a time 1 week earlier, but I have no idea what would cause this issue. My machine uses ZoneAlarm Pro, Norton Anti-Virus, Sunbelt CounterSpy and is behind a router so I don't think it was the result of a malicious program.
