I have a Northgate PC, that I purchased in 2004. It has so much stuff on my hard drive that I can't delete. It is running very slow. I can't even get my mail through OE any more. I would like to restore it back to " out of box " state.

I tried to use the System Restore function on my HP and it runs, but gives a message that System Restore can't complete and doesn't work. I even manually set a Restore point and tried to go back and restore using it, but got same message?Do I have any options, such as reinstall Restore or is there something else I can do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently had to perform a complete system recovery on my computer because I had lost control. The computer kept shutting down and starting up on its' own. I tried everything I could before I did a recovery, but it did not help. I thought I had all my important files backed up but that was not the case. My question is, can I retrieve any files now that I have done a complete system restore? I am trying to retrieve all my Quicken files. How would I go about it?
View 8 Replies View Relatedi just got this computer from a guy who had a fire dam. the computer just had smoke in it so i took it after we took all the stuff out of the guys house to throw away. he told me i could have it but he took out the hard drive. and gave me two old ones. i put them both in thinking they would work. so i turned on the comp and it told me no operating system found. i think i hooked the drives up right. i connected the power supply to them and i was told that i could hook up any ide cable to them. but no go i have a windows xp disk that i want to use but i cant get c prompt and i don't even have the gate way disks. what can i do?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI use V-Com Fix It as my suite to handle system maintenance including antivirus protection. When I try to run a scan, it goes through memory scan fine and starts working on the actual files. At some point it chokes on a file and the system starts acting strangely. The icons in the taskbar either disappear or duplicate, but when I run the cursor over them they usually disappear. If I try to launch a program I'm given various error messages like it's a bad image or not a valid system 32 file. The only solution is to reboot and that can usually only be accomplished by hitting the reset button on the case. (After posting this message, I'm going to do it again and post more of the messages I get) My CounterSpy programs scans fine, with no suspicious problems. I got Karsperky's online virus scanner to run and it didn't find anything suspicious either.
I think the problem surfaced shortly after installing .NET Framework, but I'm not sure that's the problem. I've tried uninstalling .NET Framework, re-installing version 2.0, but the same problem occurs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Fix It. I've tried using MSCONFIG to do a diagnostic boot with no mandatory service running, but still had the problem. The problem has also happened on its own without the virus scanner running. The autofile scan was probably running in the background though. The PC had been sitting for a few hours.I REALLY don't want to do a complete reinstall of XP if I don't have to. So, I'm hoping somebody here can come up with some other stuff to try.I'm running XP SP2, Fix It 7, CounterSpy 2, Kerio Personal Firewall.
Where to get a complete list of WIN XP system commands? Like the cnfgsys and powercfg. Along with what they are used for, it would help out especiall when MS support for XP dries up.

Whenever I try to hibernate my computer, the message, "Insufficient system resources to complete the API." comes up. Afterwards, anything concerning hibernation disappear and the hibernation button cannot be clicked. My system details are as follows: Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. 1.73 ghz processor with 1.50 gb of ram. the computer hibernates just fine if i start it up and hibernate immediately... but if i open anything, even if only for a few minutes and then close it again, then when i try and hibernate, it'll act like it's starting to hibernate and then give me the message:

Happens during a simple COPY/PASTE routine. We get this error code copying anything into WORD.
Both systems have more than enough "resources" available.
Both systems run XP Pro and have all the latest updates.
My system has 1.5GB RAM hers has 1GB Ram. There's more than enough HDD space available as well
Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

Just recently reinstalled windows and reformatted and was in the process of gradually getting everything set up and installed, when my drive disappeared. I don't know exactly when, but it was gone. I checked the device manager and it said the driver was corrupted, no updated driver available, so I uninstalled and restarted. Upon restart, Windows recognizes the drive and begins to install it

I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.

My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.
