A new laptop with Windows XP Professional Installed and when I was typing in my name for the computer, I was an idiot and typed it in Tim LIn and it really annoys me. I was able to change who the computer was registered to by going to Run and typing in regedit. However, when I lock my computer or when I go to C:/Documents and Settings, I still see the messed up name of Tim LIn. Is there anyway of fixing this without having to totally reset my computer? Or, how do I completely reload my OS?
My new laptop came preinstalled with Windows XP. When it booted up, it asked me who would be using this computer, saying something about how it would create new profiles for them. I whimsically decided to enter "THE KING" (to be the admin) and "peasant" (for other users).
Apparently that was a bad idea because now it says the computer is registered to THE KING (for example, when you click My Computer, then properties). Is there any way to change it?
Kindly advise me how to changemy computer ID in XP home. When I purchased my laptop while travelling abroad the dealer initiated the computer and typed in an ID. This ID "YOUR-AYZ9QSTP1" appears whenever I communicate with other devices. I need to replace it with an appropriate personal ID.
When I want to change the way my PC looks I can't do it the way I want. I right click the desktop go to programs, then under the Appearance tab I can only get the looks change by doing it myself, like in 'Windows Classic" I try to change it to "Windows XP Style" but when I click 'OK' or 'apply' the PC freezes. I have to shut off PC with button The computer use to be okay. I did a clean Install of XP from my XP Home Upgrade CD. I really have NO problems but this one, making me NUTSO.
I am giving my old computer to my partner and would like to change the log in screen so it will stop saying my name.I have changed the password on it, but it still says my name when logging back it and this has to be manually changed. As well, when logging off, it keeps asking to log off with my name, not the new user.
I had a system crash losing the entire hard-disk. When I took it for a new disk and reinstallation of related programs, my name as owner was not input. So "Registered to:" on the "System Properties" page shows "USER" instead of my name. How can I change "USER" to my name without having to reinstall Windows? OS ia Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)
After I set the time on my personal computer it holds for a few weeks then another time is in it's place? Sometimes it holds for a week, sometimes a month but always loses the correct time?I'm using Windows XP with Internet Explorer 8.
In most of my applications, it can bring up the name of my computer, I just installed MS Publisher and it brings up my company name which is great but the word "Mountain" is abbreviated and I want it to read Mountain. I go in to control panel, system and it shows it there as being Mtn
I had a problem with the Joe Hill virus last year. I just went into properties of my computer and Joe Hill is listed as the registered to: person. I also can't find out what name is my admistrator. I can't get into documents and settings.

I want to sell my computer, desktop XP SP2 but I want to change the name as registered user to my friend. How do I do that or can it be done without re-installing windows?

(How much it will hold, kind of memory, etc) what I need to know for sure (I guess for some support) All I have to do is turn her computer off take out the 128Mb put in the two sticks of 256 and reboot the computer should recognize the different and more memory. (right ?) Also does; anyone no what the name of that program is that you can use to see if your new memory is working?? I had it and don't no what happened to it. If you no please point me in the right direction. and let me know if I am right about changing the memory.
This is a work laptop that I bring home .The computer is normally "registered" on the work domain, but I was doing a VPN-related test for something else where I thought I needed to be off the network (complicated to explain but not related to my current problem.
What I did specifically was:
1 - Right click on the My Computer icon to get to the Computer Name tab. 2 - unclicked the domain button and clicked the workgroup button for group HOME (this required me to "login" with my work username/password 3 - got the message that I had to restart to take effect, which I did.
My friend's computer used to shut down completely when she pressed Start/Shut down, and she was using Windows 98. Now she is using Windows XP Home Ed., a message comes up: "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How can we get rid of that message so that the computer will shut down completely again by itself like it used to?
Is there a setting that we can change somewhere please? She would like to be able to use Start/Shut Down and the computer would shut completely down without any furhter steps.
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs will not load. It just keeps searching and searching for the "programs" and never actually shows the programs to remove.
Following a recent change of monitor my computer now hangs at the windows logo screen. It also hangs during startup in safe mode and when trying to boot fromthe windows CD.
i need to use a program for diagnosing faults in my car. I am told I have to use com_port 4 or lower but am unable to find any mention of where this is changed.
What would cause me to have to change my boot sequence everytime to get my computer to boot into windows ? When it restarts after I change the boot sequence it goes right into windows xp. I recently had a new hard drive and more memory put in the computer. It will not boot into windows xp until I go into my setup and change the boot sequence everytime. Then it will boot into windows. The computer is about 6 years old and windows xp was an upgrade to 98. Once the computer is in windows it works just fine. Changing the bood sequence everytime is a bummer.
I have an admin account for the network domain I am not able to change a computer name without first removing the computer from the domain and joining a workgroup. Is changing a computer name a specific permission that the network administrator can grant to my account? Also, since I've been removing and then rejoining computers to the domain I hit the limit on the number of times I can join a computer to a domain. Where is this number defined, and reset?
I would like to know if it's possible to have a decent experience on windows xp with a so limited computer like mine and if so what can I change or improve to make this computer run less slowly. Here's my computer specs: IBM Personal Computer 300GLType: 6563-A2F,Pentium III 728Mhz, 128Ram, HD 20GB,Video Card: Savage 4 16MB, Windows Xp SP3 Fresh install since today,Non-ACPI compatible computer,Forced HAL installation in Standard PC Mode.
My computer (H.P. Pavilion ze 4900 laptop) is running ver-r-r-ry slow.I have: Defragged, Cleaned up my cookies, Uninstalled unneeded programs, Restored the system to a date prior to the occurrence of the slow running speed,Restarted the computer.I have not: Done a disc clean-up (because I have been given conflicting counsel [re: the safety of doing a disc clean-up] by folks who know more about computers than I do.)
Shut down programs running in the back ground(Although I have lots of programs running in the back ground,I have not shut any of those things down because 1)I dont know how to discriminate between what should and what should not be shut down and 2)I dont how to shut those programs down.)Done a virus sweep or a spy-ware sweep (because those operations take a long time even when the computer is running at normal speed
so, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE! i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots? i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.
i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app it says that bluetooth and wireless are not present (by the way i can still get the bluetooth button to work - correction - it starts up with the button on but if i turn it off it won't let me turn it on again). the emanager and presentation manager buttons on the laptops casing don't work either (i have to access them via software route).
Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.
I cannot change the audio on my computer. It's at mute and I cannot raise the volume.I checked my Device Manager and under Sounds, and video game controllers Nothing has an exclamation mark. But under 'Other Devices', my PCI Device, SM Bus COntroller and Video Controller all have exclamation marks. What do I do to fix my problem
I have one user with a laptop (windows xp pro). he initially signed on to the laptop as jsmith. This was fine except the username he has at work and the email address he has is pjsmith.now he would like to have his laptop signon as pjsmith rather than jsmith.I would like to simply create the user new (pjsmith), copy the old (jsmith) profile to the new (pjsmith) profile and then delete the old (jsmith). I have tested this on another machine and it doesn't work so well.
